David Shelby - Oh Yeah
I will admit I knew nothing about David Shelby and his music until the other day, and I must say I am pleasantly surprised, to say the least!! With his upbeat country soul and blue collar grittiness, and Motor City, Detroit roots, David has redefined “new country” as his own brand of what he has coined as Rust Belt Country music.
Born of proud Polish and Russian parents, and as tradition warrants, David was given both an accordion and a bowling ball at a very early age. Many hours he would sit playing Toby Keith and Garth Brooks songs on his squeeze-box while listening to the radio. David states, “My Dad taught me how to use both the a accordion and the bowling ball. It's far easier to pick up a ‘split’ with an accordion than with a bowling ball”. David learned the trumpet as well, but soon realized he was meant to be on stage. He traded his trumpet for the guitar and a microphone, and he hasn't stopped since!
Writing his lyrics from the heart, and with his energetic onstage performances,David has earned himself an incredible reputation as a Headliner show for many top country music artists. His songs reflect his love of Nashville and country living. Along with his Detroit grit and grooves, his good humor and having the heart of a good ol’ country boy while living by his blue collar roots is what Rust Belt Country music is all about.
The first title track for review is an upbeat sassy song about a girl with a rocking body that makes men just want to say, OH YEAH!
The second song for review, PODUNK, is my favorite though! With lyrics like; “...don't give a flying hillbilly, ….with a houseful of younguns, gotta baby in her belly and a baby on her hip, little towhead rascal peeing off the porch, …Bunch of fake flamingos flocking by the ditch, ...Backwoods backwards where your neck is red… Holla if ya is, shut up if ya aint, …. Po Po Po Dunk, Po Po Po Dunk” hits home for me. Barefoot and pregnant at 18 with a houseful of kids was what I fought like hell not to become. And it's especially hard to get out of any little PoDunk town after having babies at an early age. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, just that wasn't what I had in my mind for my very own future, thus, it hits home for me and my PODUNK town.
The third track, KICK A LITTLE DIRT, is country life at its best… We all like to relax and enjoy our free time, and some of us even love to KICK A LITTLE DIRT up when we get the rare chance to dance. MOONSHINE, the final track provided for review, grabbed my attention with its opening lyrics of, “Good God almighty, great balls of fire” had me wanting more...more truthful lyrics that hit home, and the need to hear more of David's heart and soul poured out through his writing and his music.
David Shelby, with the soul of a good ol’ country boy, and his down to earth blue collar, Detroit inspired Nashville lyrics, is one man’s music I intend to keep my eyes on, and ears out for in the future! Look him up and check him out for yourself; I'm sure you'll find a song or two you like, or maybe even hit home as well.
Y'all have a great week!! Over and out...Penney!

TED & ALICE MILLER
Adults Don't Speak
One Track Mind - Crier - Sarcastic Depression - Summertime Fades - Theresa - Adults Don't Speak - Valentine's Day - You Won't Ruin - Silver Linings - Slippery Slide - River - Cemetery Space Concerns
One of my very favorite folk-country acts in the entire upper Midwest is Ted & Alice Miller. This engaging couple make their home in upper Nebraska living a very un-urbanized life. Small town life ultimately talks about lots of 'stuff' including muddy water. "Crier" is a sure-fire Americana 'rock' style song with lots to say. So does "Sarcastic Depression" singing about the slippery slide with a banjo telling us there's nothing slippery about that. Recorded at Pony Creek Studios in Sioux Falls, SD, even though I favor a softer more acoustic style of music, I find this CD incredibly engaging. It's a kind of reversion to a time when folk music and rock music was just beginning to meld, but more likeable, more original, more inspiring. Harmonica on 'Summertime Fades' takes us right back to that incredibly entertaining old-timey duet singing sounding like it was coming right off the front porch of a beautiful cabin in the hills. Chad Conrad is the 'mind' behind Pony Creek Studios as well as the ear, and he did a top-notch job putting this CD in it's proper order. "Adults Don't Speak" the primary CD 'name' is interesting, mostly because of the heavy bass throughout. It's not rock and it's not folk, but it sure is original. If I could compare this to any famous artist, I guess it would be David Bowie. On the other hand it's definitely what's happening in rural roots music in America among the young. Last song is also a super good acoustic number. "Take me out to the dump." in a cemetery of course. Controversial as it might seem, this very subject is a constant concern of the elderly. Even though I'm strictly a 'traditional' country music lover, I have always had a soft spot for any kind of 'original' music that is written with 'soul' being the ink in the pen. That's plentifully available here from Ted & Alice. This couple does an amazing 'live' performance of their music, certainly their originals. Their messages are loud and clear. Listen up Adults, stop yelling and start talking.

Songs I Wrote
Ain't Gonna Do It No More - Never The Hammer - Can't Write A Country Song - I'd Like To Play More Bluegrass - Don't Turn Around - God Answers Every Prayer - Guess You Changed Your Mind - Blue Grass In Heaven - Living Together Alone - Chicken Inn Song - Nobody Likes My Kind Of Music - Those Old Gospel Songs
Ron Dupuy is a Creston, Iowa writer of great country songs. One of the best country songs on this album of all 'originals' is "Can't Write A Co,untry Song." It sure is a great picture of what's happening today in commercial county music. Ron is also a great vocalist, his voice is just right for the songs he is writing and recording. He learned to sing from his mother and four sisters. They taught him well. His voice sounds much younger than he actually is, which makes my observations in the business of country music still true. Even if you are an older performer, picker, vocalist, or writer, there has always been a 'place' in country music for you, an open door. Today that isn't quite true, especially in Nashville where it is a closed door society now. Not so in our upper Midwest. We see Ron performing quite frequently, and his talent is apparent in this great CD. Every one of these songs are really good 'true' country creations. Certainly not the hodge-podge of 'made-for-profit' creations coming from Nashville. This is the real deal, this is writing of the very best, from experience, from the heart, from the soul. I've only had the opportunity of hearing Ron perform a couple of times, and they have always been a very nice experience. I would hope to hear him more often, as a matter of fact we are going to open up some 'time' on our Oak Tree shows in Anita, Iowa, by inviting songwriters to come do a couple of their original songs for us. On every show if there are enough songwriters to go around. Another plus on this album is the mix done at Gould Studios. Phil Gould the mover and shaker behind the studio has a great ear for country music, the placement of the instrumentation, and the instrumentation itself, using all the 'right' instruments to not only uphold the song, but push it forward, bringing Ron's voice to the exact middle spot it should be. The instruments chosen for the backing all sound great, and the instrumentation itself is exceedingly well done. I really like the lead guitar on "Chicken Inn Song." I believe Ron plays an acoustic rhythm guitar, and it too is right out front, right behind his voice exactly where it should be. There's also a couple of songs that relate to 'bluegrass' but bluegrass it isn't, not fast enough for one thing, but it's story songs 'about' bluegrass, not bluegrass itself. This CD goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission for their listening pleasure. This CD is a reflection of where good 'real' country music is holding forth in the upper Midwest.
