CD Review: BOBBY DARREN - Real Country

BOBBY DARREN
Real Country
Goodbye Littler Darlin' - Here Today Gone Tomorrow - I Never Go Around Mirrors - Not For Me To Understand - Jackson - Jeanne Norman - No One's Gonna Love You Better - Second Handed Flowers - Traveling Dobro - Waiting For A Train

One thing about Bobby Darren for anyone who has ever heard him perform, knows that he is 'real' country.  This CD is a reflection of that wonderful genre of music that for years and years was 'real.'  If you listen to commercial country radio these days, you will find an amazing difference in the music you hear there called country, and the music you hear here, by Bobby Darren, as very very different.  How can that be?  Money and greed is the answer.  Since I hardly ever listen to country music of today, ever since Blake Shelton called me an old fart and a jackass because I listen to the country music of an artist like Bobby Darren, I will gladly be called that if I can still hear 'real' country music like Bobby Darren does.  He not only sings it well in concert, but records just as well on CD.  He's got one heck of a Dobro player on this session, which matches Darren's voice to a tee. The first song out of the chute is one that Darren sounds a bit like Johnny Cash on.  Just as real as real.  His voice moves to a more natural Bobby Darren sound all the rest of the way through.  This guy can really sing 'real' country music, and that makes him all the more 'real' as a performing and recording artist.  And, he's been doing it for a very long time.  He's going to be given a "Lifetime Achievement" award in 2017 by the National Traditional Country Music Association, and this CD is going to the Rural Roots Music Commission to see if they might like to recognize his work as well.  This whole CD is a trip back in time to when country music was country music, no doubt about that.   There's also a super good mandolin on some of these songs.  By the time we get to "Jackson" on this CD, I was ready for Darren's voice to go back to the Johnny Cash sound, and indeed it does.  Don't know who the female voice is, but it's a good rendition sound of June Carter. Super good listening, especially since it sounds so 'real.'  She also sings "No One's Gonna Love You Better" also super good.  I also liked "Traveling Dobro" which is a fast-paced instrumental with the Dobro being the lead-off instrument with some well interspersed fiddle and mandolin.  All of them incredibly well done.  I'm not sure how many of these instruments Bobby Darren plays, but they are incredibly well played.  He closes this CD with a very traditional song by the Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers.  Once again Bobby Darren reverts back to a kind-of Johnny Cash sound, not quite, but sure enough so well done it doesn't even need the Cash influence or input.  Super good CD ..... 5 stars for sure.

CD Review: DAVID GREEN - Gospel Favorites Vol. 1

DAVID GREEN
Gospel Favorites Vol. 1
I Saw The Light - Man In Sandals - Mansion On The Hilltop - Master's Boquet - Were You There? - Three Men On A Mountain - Jordan - I Heard Mother Call My Name - Little Mountain Church House - In The Garden

As I listen to David Green's brand new Gospel CD, our beautiful America is in the throng of a political election unlike anything that has ever happened in our country.  What that means to me is, I need a good dose of great 'real' old-time gospel music.  That's exactly what David Green does with his wonderful and excellent guitar picking, both the rhythm and the lead parts, and his very good traditional country singing.  He plays a really nice sounding guitar, and he knows how to use it properly with some excellent old-time gospel songs.  He arranged to have some of his close friends helping him on this nice project, but does not tell us who they are on his album cover, but a few of them I recognize just from hearing them on the CD.  Rick & Harriette Andersen I can identify easily, they join David on Terry Smith's "Far Side Banks of Jordan.".  Upright bass, acoustic guitar, and harmonica all lend a beautiful addition to this lovely old-time musical presentation.  Marge Lund is also introduced to us, as is Fred & Dorothy Techau who does a great job on "In The Garden."  David has so kindly dedicated this CD to his mother who is no longer with us, however his father Harold is still active, and a photo of mom and dad are on the inside cover.  Nicely done.  The first song "I Saw The Light" might have a little to much reverb on it, but that fades away as one listens, until we get the really good hard-core 'real-deal' when it comes to a simple adoration and appreciation for our Lord Jesus Christ. David Green will not be moved from his foundation belief in Christ, it's all positive, and delightfully done.  This CD is much like the really early mountain folk presentations.  Nothing phony about this, it's exactly as it sounds whether it's in a studio or on a stage somewhere, or in a concert.  That's what's so great about old-time music without any of the demands made by some uncompromising producer.  It's very real, it's exactly as it is, and it's very entertaining. Since this is Volume-1, I'm sure we're going to hear more from David Green & Friends although we don't know who they might be.  Bottom line on this great CD is that it goes directly to the Rural Roots Music Commission even though it's early for them to make CD of the Year decisions.  Since I also sit on the Board there, my vote is going to go to David.

VERANSTALTUNGSHINWEIS

Luke Bryan Story

Luke Bryan’s amazing career continues on its well-deserved upward path. On October 24, he stepped onto the stage of the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame for a “Beyond The Stadium Lights” party to celebrate SEVEN Number One hits.  He shared the stage with the writers of the hit songs, being sure to emphasize that this event was ‘all about the writers’ who created these amazing songs. In performing the seven songs, Bryan and the songs’ writers took turns singing the verses and choruses, obviously having a heck of a good time together at this once-in-a-lifetime event. The seven Number Ones, with writer credits) are: ‘Home Alone Tonight’ (Tommy Cecil, Jaida Dreyer, Jody Stevens, Cole Taylor); ‘Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day’ (Luke Bryan, Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, Ben Hayslip); ‘I See You’ (Luke Bryan, Ashley Gorley, Luke Laird); ‘Kick the Dust Up’ (Dallas Davidson, Chris DeStefano, Ashley Gorley);  ‘Play It Again’ (Dallas Davidson, Ashley Gorley); ‘Roller Coaster’ (Michael Carter, Cole Swindell); ‘Strip It Down’ (Luke Bryan, Ross Copperman, Jon Nite). Luke and the writers shared stories – often hilarious stories – telling how each of the songs came about. To cap the evening, Universal Music Group’s Mike Dungan announced that Luke’s album ‘Kill The Lights’ had just been certified Platinum. He also gave some stats: 8 million albums sold, 355 streams and 16th Number one singles. Luke quoted Country Music and Songwriter Hall of Famer Bobby Braddock, "Boys, Looks Like We Got Plaque Build Up. Tour news and more at lukebryan.com.
