CD Review: Brian Lee Robinson - The Texas Side of Nashville

                          The Texas Side of Nashville
               Brian Lee Robinson

Review by Andreea Smedescu, PhD Literature

Music is the embodiment of utter freedom. The soul spreads its wings, allowing the artist to experience life beyond limits and in syncope with the rhythms of the world until the universe becomes the echo of their songs. Brian Lee Robinson defines life as a sum of contrasts, “beauty” and “illusion”, hope and despair, light and darkness, happiness and sadness. Beauty or Illusion” has a subtle philosophical meaning. The illusion of the quixotic life quest mingles with the aesthetic beauty of one's own inner values and beliefs. And Brian’s voice is peaceful, like the echo of Dante's Virgil, guiding the listener through the valley of the material world, until the soul sees the light of music.
When one listens to his music, one sees Johnny Cash singing “The Ballad of Ira Hayes”. In Brian Lee Robinson’s music, the angel of harmony looks deep inside our souls, reminding us of a mythical Texas which rises out of the ashes of folklore to a new dawn. The music goes with the wind of reality, outlining the substance of existence. Brian Lee Robinson is a Texan with a quest. He is in the pursuit of happiness, and for him fulfillment can only be found the heart of humanity, and music. His love for Texas is strong, but stronger is his determination to triumph over Time, his Demons, and Insanity. Although people “Go Fat and Go Ugly” as this humorous song says, it is only their bodies that change. Their dreams are kept alive by the rhythms of an eternal song of hope.
Brian Lee Robinson’s voice is strong. In an Apollonian light, Texas is born with every strum of guitar. Nashville is recreated as a space of memory, as a chaotic interstice of bygone past. Nevertheless, this past is reanimated by music. As Paul Verlaine confessed in his poetical creed: “Music before all else”, now is Brian Lee Robinson’s turn to let his artistic creed bear the witness of the ultimate truth, i.e. “Music is the beginning and the end, and everything else is but a shadow.” Music becomes the symbol of a faithful companion. “That Old Cat” is a metaphor of consuming love, encompassing the bond of friendship between an artist and humanity. “That Old Cat” was also real, because music breathes the intelligence of compassion and kindness upon the children of nature. Even the smallest animal can be the messenger of the inner music which resounds in eternity. And eternity is an odyssey of permanence. Texas will never be a ghost town as long as there is a Brian Lee Robinson in this world. His music will forever remind us that a ‘goodbye’ is just the prelude of a new encounter, and his music will flow like the water of Lethe. People will come to drink from the waters of harmony, forgetting about Time and Space. They will only feel “The Gone Side of Goodbye” bowing before the power of Art. Only a true Texan has the ability to bestow life upon the State of his sacred geography, and Brian Lee Robinson is a new Orpheus descended to the subterranean sides of life to sing his love for Texas, culture, and lore.

Brian Lee Robinson The Heart Of Texas Comes Back Home

WHEN THE HEART OF TEXAS COMES BACK HOME
Brian Lee Robinson pens poetic songs within his latest EP, The Texas Side of Nashville, displaying a rich blend of Americana and Country songwriting.

The pen is mightier than the sword, and combined with music is all powerful!”
- Author, Sally Cronin

(HOUSTON, TEXAS, U.S.A.) August 1, 2016 – Singer-songwriter Brian Lee Robinson has the uncanny ability to compose his poetry into beautiful songs. His latest EP, The Texas Side of Nashville, is country music in its truest form. In this project, Brian fuses storytelling and melodic musical scores into his trademark “Heart of Texas” style.
The Texas Side of Nashville consists of four tracks each based on Brian’s life experiences. Brian taps into his deep down emotions and uses them to empower his poetic songwriting skills. The result is an array of harmonious storytelling melodies. Brian’s creative goal of this EP was to harness his artistry and achieve, “... redemption for my self-inflicted past, and for my future in country music.”
To Robinson, his lyrics and six-string are the tools he utilizes to bring his stories to life. This fact shines through within The Texas Side of Nashville. Brian’s talent was handed down to him by his father who passed away when he was only eight years old. But, he was a hit songwriter himself, Brian would find out years later. Brian’s draws inspiration from the likes of Hank Williams Sr. and Jr., Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. By the age of twenty-one, Brian moved to Nashville and landed a job at a Merit Music Publishing. This position opened a door of opportunity for him to meet talented writers such as; Roger Alan Wade, Jerry Barlow, and Mentor Williams, among many others.
The Texas Side of Nashville encompasses four tracks that range from mid-tempo to one slower ballad. Each track is a semi-autobiographical glance into Brian’s life. “That Old Cat” has a classic country/folk tune that seems a cross with Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt. The appeal of this track is that it tells the poignant stories of friendship between him and his loyal cat “Kelsey.” You don’t hear many songs about cats, don’t miss this one. “The Gone Side of Goodbye” is a toe-tapping Honky-Tonk anthem about leaving his life in Nashville and heading back to Texas. When it comes to Brian’s songwriting, his meaningful lyrics originate from a place where life’s hard lessons collide with “country-fried” honesty and genuine emotions. Brian’s songs come right from the front porch of his soul to the listener. In The Texas Side of Nashville, Brian delves down into his deepest darkest feelings, but the end, his songs reflect pure country, shining under the bright lights of Texas.
