CD: RONNIE JAY WHEELER - Red Dust Hideaway

RONNIE JAY WHEELER
Red Dust Hideaway
Red Dust Hideaway (Fourth Rate Romance Blues) - Book Of Empty Pages - They Won't Play My Songs on K101 - White Houses - Tornado Alley Love - Stranger In A Strange Land - Chem Trail Pneumonia Blues - I Wish I Was A Fiddler (From Eureka Springs) - Can't Seem To Make You Mine/Somebody's Watching You - When They Ring The Golden Bells - Red Dog Bottle Cap Song (Know When To Walk Away) - Old Jim's Recreation - This Land Is Your Land - Chem Trail Pneumonia (bonus track)

Ronnie Wheeler, like Wally Sanderson from Australia, attended the 40th National Old Time Country/Folk/Bluegrass Festival in LeMars, Iowa, for recognition of his recording abilities with a "CD of the Year" award from the Rural Roots Music Commission.  He gave me this album to review, and here I am listening to an interesting composer and recording artist, Ronnie Jay Wheeler.  He wrote ten of the songs on this interesting recording experience.  Ronnie isn't really a traditional or even classical country composer and singer.  He added a couple of songs from his obvious 'hero' list, Eric Burdon from the Animals, contributed 'White Houses" and another hero of Ronnie's, Woody Guthrie contributed "This Land Is Your Land.'  The entire album is a sort of country-blues-rock-folk album which makes it very interesting to me. Wheeler writes very much in the style of Guthrie, even sings a bit in the Guthrie style.  He uses a lot of electric guitar and interesting bluesy harmonica on nearly every song. Some of the songs are long rambling stories, but they are very interesting because Ronnie Jay Wheeler definitely has something to say when he writes.  A lot of various, and very gifted, musicians took part in this session.  Ronnie plays 12-string guitar, using it on the opening song "Red Dust Highway," and 6-string electric guitar, as well as a 6-string acoustic guitar. I also found it interesting that Bill Palmer of Santa Fe, New Mexico, did the mix and mastering at Frogville there.  Both of these ingredients are extremely well done.   Not being stoned as I listened to this production, I'm pretty sure that is the audience Ronnie is trying to please.  He took himself with excellent blues to do a little 'hillbilly' sound with "I Wish I Was A Fiddler (From Eureka Springs)" and he added some incredible Wurlitzer Hammond organ sound to "Red Dog Bottle Cap Song."  In another of his 'life feeling' songs "The Won't Play My Songs on K101" he writes "Big deal David Allen Coe, you ain't got nothing on me, cause I can write songs about my life too, and no matter what you might say, I'm still free."  Ronnie Jay Wheeler may very well be the very last traveling troubadour of old style country-blues-folk music working today.  Popular music, and the incredible phoniness of it, can't hold a candle to Wheeler's sometimes tragic songs of soul, heart, and life

CD: WALLY SANDERSON - Treasured Memories

WALLY SANDERSON
Treasured Memories
Some Days Are Diamonds - Homestead Of Our Dreams - The Droving Days - Never Was At All - You're My Best Friend - Crystal Chandeliers - True Aussie Woman - Catching Scrubbers - Leave Him In The Longyard - Fire Of Gidge Coals - The Campdraft - There Goes My Everything - All I Have To Offer You Is Me - Three Rivers Hotel

Wally Sanderson came to America in 2015, especially to be inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame.  He is a most generous man with his talent and his music, sharing it with new-made friends and fans at the ceremonies where the inductions take place, LeMars, Iowa, at the 40th Annual National Old-Time Country/Bluegrass/Folk Music Festival.  From his list of songs on this remarkable CD you will find a couple of great American classics, "Crystal Chandeliers,"   "You're My Best Friend," and "There Goes My Everything."  They are done in the classic traditional country style, however Wally stands out best on his own songs of which he has five on this delightful listening experience.  Wally is directly from the rural-agricultural area of Australia, and raises cattle there, white-faced short horns I gather from the photo on this easy to listen to CD.  He also brings to the forefront words we might not be able to understand .  "Scrubbers,' 'longyard,' 'gidge,' and 'campdraft,' just a few to begin with, all of them appearing in the song titles.  Good productions deserve honor where honor is due, Peter Townson at Elevenpm Studios put this musical treat together for Wally, and though we don't know who the musicians are, they did a really nice job keeping everything intact and together throughout this musical presentation.  The lead guitarist is especially good, and knows how to interpret Wally's adventure in music.  Wally has a wonderful and truly 'country' voice to express the songs and stories he tells in songs.  One of my favorite songs on this album is "Never Was At All" written by another great Aussie songwriter, Norma O'Hara Murphy, who was also on the list to be at LeMars in 2015 but her own festival of great old-time country music in Australia became a direct conflict.  It's kind of fun for me to hear Wally Sanderson sing with that 'Aussie' accent.  It means one thing to me.  Country music is an international trend, especially the classic and traditional country music sound that has been so popular over the years.  I get so discouraged at those who do the contemporary country music sound, removing all trace of the fiddle and/or the steel guitar.  They continually accuse me of wanting to 'live in the past.'  That simply isn't true, and Wally Sanderson does a good job of bring the past alive in his stories and songs, and I can justly say "I have no desire to live in the past, but I do like to have the past live with me," and Wally is writing and singing these great 'real country' songs TODAY, not forty or fifty years ago.  Super good traditional work, this CD goes off to the Rural Roots Music Commission.

DOLLY PARTON HONORED WITH MOVIEGUIDE® MOST INSPIRING TV PROGRAM OF 2015

DOLLY PARTON HONORED WITH MOVIEGUIDE® MOST INSPIRING TV PROGRAM OF 2015 FOR "DOLLY PARTON'S COAT OF MANY COLORS"

Movieguide® Awards Air February 22 7/6c on REELZChannel

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 7, 2016) – The Movieguide® Awards honored international entertainment icon Dolly Parton with the Epiphany Prize for the Most Inspiring TV Program of 2015 for her NBC TV movie “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors.”

“I really wanted to celebrate the people, my whole family, who made me who and what I am today. I'm so blessed and thankful for a great cast, producers, director, and for everyone who watched and I’m extremely thankful to the Movieguide® Awards for this honor,” Parton said.

The presentation of the Epiphany Prizes for the Most Inspiring Movie and TV Program of 2015 is the highlight of the Awards, which also will be telecast Monday, Feb. 22, and Wednesday, Feb. 24 on the REELZChannel. The Epiphany Prizes are supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation (www.templeton.org). They are given every year to the “best, most inspiring movie and television program that resulted in a great increase in man’s love or understanding of God.”

Dolly Parton’s heartwarming film about following your dreams, having faith and keeping love alive despite tough times attracted 13 million viewers and was the most watched movie on broadcast TV in more than 3 years when it aired Dec. 10 on NBC.

The film is set in the Tennessee Great Smoky Mountains in 1955. It is neither a biopic nor musical about Parton’s whole life and performing career, but rather a family-oriented faith-based story about the incidents in her and her family’s life around the time she was 9 years old.

“Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” is the first in a planned series of TV movies inspired by the country music icon’s songs.
