Peter Prince - Softly Down

The song "Softly Down" was written by BMI songwriter Peter Prince and published by Joe Pickering Jr's King Of The Road Music. There are currently two versions, one by Colene Walters ( "Softly Down" video) and a version by talented Nashville vocalist, Alan Johnson. Both are now available for streaming and/or downloading on  CDBaby, Itunes, Amazon, Apple, Spotify  etc. The song was inspired by the courage and professionalism of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and the event known as "The Miracle on the Hudson." On January 15th, 2009, Flight 1549, leaving from LaGuardia Airport, NYC. to Charlotte,North Carolina with 155 people aboard, was struck by birds, leaving both engines incapacitated. Amazingly Captain Sullenberger guided the plane over the George Washington Bridge and with no other options, landed it in the Hudson River. All 155 aboard survived the ordeal. Sully's calm but firm approach and skill in what was essentially gliding a commercial jet into freezing waters, turned a seasoned airline pilot into a national hero and celebrity..

Peter told me that he wrote "Softly Down" three days after the event after listening to the cockpit recording of Captain Sullenberger's interaction with the airport's control tower personnel. When he said, "We're gonna be in the Hudson", I felt the strength of this man and teared up, said Peter." My feeling was if I was on that plane this is the kind of man that would give me hope that I might survive."

It was announced several months ago that Warner Brothers Pictures with Clint Eastwood directing and Tom Hanks playing "Sully" (the movie's title) would begin filming the beginning of this year. The latest news is that the movie's release will be September 9, 2016. It is Peter's hope that "Softly Down" will somehow find its way into the film."  My publisher and the performer on the video[ Link] Ms. Colene Walters see it as a wonderful fit with closing credits. Ms. Walters should know. She has spent a good part of her life as a singer in Nashville, TN. She performed with two country icons; the legendary Porter Wagoner as his duet partner, filling the role once held by Dolly Parton and Johnny Russell, who wrote "Act Naturally" that became a hit for The Beatles among many others. The stage of The Grand Ole Opry became her workplace and she appeared with Porter on tv shows like Crook and Chase and the Waylon Jennings Show. "I love her interpretation of the song. It has a very reverential feel, almost prayerful" Peter told me.

One of the writer's most rewarding experiences regarding the song/ video is that it was heard by one of the survivors of Flight 1549, Mr. Dave Sanderson, who placed it on his website. Mr. Sanderson was the last passenger off the plane, who ended up in the water, after helping others to safety. "Dave's embracing of my effort was an honor and that it might have resonated with him, was very fulfilling." That and maybe hearing it  in "Sully."

As old timey as Hee Haw and as current as Luke Bryan, The Merle Travis Story cd is a definite add to any cd collection, mach nichts what your preferred musical genre is. If you look for the roots of country music's story telling mantra you find them thoroughly implanted throughout this 24 song cd. Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!, co written by Merle Travis and Tex Williams, was the only mega hit Tex Williams ever had. It “made” his career but his version is one-upped by the spirited Merle Travis recording included here. Merle Travis solo-wrote “Sixteen Tons” and had his own radio hit with this song back when country music was nicknamed the white man's blues, played mostly in the southeastern American states. It took Tennessee Ernie Ford's recording to bring this song into world consciousness, and one of Roy Clark's greatest accomplishments on Hee Haw was to have Ernie Ford sing “Sixteen Tons” while Merle Travis played dobro and Roy accompanied on guitar. We lost Ernie Ford and Merle Travis shortly thereafter. A web search for the lyrics to “When My Baby Double Talks To Me” uncovered several sites desperately searching for the lyrics to the double and triple talk segments on this song. “When My Baby Double Talks To Me” is deserving of three consecutive listens before you proceed to the next song. Heartstrings Touching Ground, the new 14 song cd by Jill Cohn could easily be subtitled “Textures” or “Tapestry”. If this cd was a Persian rug it would easily sell for over $5000 U.S. With melodies steeped in Seattle coffee house folk, lyrics as caressing as the melodies, and Jill Cohn vocals making you think Joni Mitchell meets Emmylou Harris, put this cd in your player and let it repeat over and over again. Just like her live show, this Jill Cohn cd is easy listening, easy to talk over, and easily sneaks back into your consciousness every time your conscious mind settles down for a split second. Standout tracks include California Blue, Me and Bobby McGee, and Better Life. Next time I listen I'll probably pick three new standout tracks. Heartstrings Touching Ground is pure audio bliss from start to finish.

CD: ANGIE SENGER - Country Memories

ANGIE SENGER
Country Memories
Get Crazy - Dry Red Roses - I'm Gone - I Walk These Halls Alone - Last Train - Bad Moon - I'm Single Again - Country Memories - Lost At Sea - Just Fishing - What Were You Thinking - That Big Old Tree - What Are You Looking For - Party In The Garage

All of the songs on this classic country album were written by the Minnesota vocalist, musician, and obviously good songwriter, Angie Senger.  I believe she spends her winter-time in or near Phonenix, Arizona, where she hones her talent for writing with her talent for vocalizing.  It's also notable that this particular CD was recorded at ChasBen Audio in Apache Junction, Arizona. The mix is pretty stunning, and sounds like a lot of engineer hours were spent by Charles Bennington making the 'balance' so easy to listen to.  Angie has a very nice 'country' voice.  She vocalizes her feelings of being alone, single, gone, and wanting to party.  It's the early 70's and 80's sound of country music on this album.  I really like the way the electric guitar picks lead.  Sounds like brothers picking, but it's Angie on acoustic rhythm guitar, and Jay Dee Hoag picking lead behind her, and really does a nice job.  Angie also plays the bass, and she does that in the older straight country style.  No need for jazz runs or attempts to make this the lead instrument, it' not necessary.  Her song structure is also quite good.  She stays within that 3-chord style that so wonderfully embellishes the original, very identifiable character of country music.  Well, OK, she modulates occasionally, and sometimes uses a fourth chord to emphasize a bar or two.   Sounds a little like Luther Perkins pickin' on "Last Train" a nice Johnny Cash touch to Angie's lovely voice.  I was kind of hoping she would yodel on "I'm Single Again" a perfect song for that kind of touch.  Still, it's a well written country song just as it is.  I also like, very much, how the front cover of this album flows into the rear cover.  Same photo, but enlarged on the back to match the front.  Took some graphics expertise to make that happen, and it's well done.  Good CD.  Off it goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission for their listening.  They are getting a lot of CD's the last few years with this 70's/80's style of recording, but I never know how they are going to 'rate' anything.  My best of luck to Angie.

CD: JIMMY ARTHUR ORDGE - 15 Traditional Country Hits

JIMMY ARTHUR ORDGE
15 Traditional Country Hits
The Ballad of Muk-Tuk Annie - Old Dogs Children & Watermelon Wine - He'll Have To Go - Herschel's Hemi Half-Ton - Irena Cheyenne - Country Bumpkin - Blue Eyes  Cryin' In The Rain - Just One Night Of Love - Storytime & Prayers - You've Never Been This Far Before - The Ballad of Dawson City - The Old Man - Teddy Bear - The Ballad of Pierre Oral Bonafee - Mother's Bible

I received this very nice traditional and classic country CD from one of Canada's most influential promoters, not only of 'real' country music, but the land known as Newfoundland where Michael T. Wall is originally from.  He's one of many foreign artists that attend the National Old Time Country Music Festival in LeMars, Iowa (Aug 29-Sept 4, 2016).  Jimmy Arthur Ordge is the artist that Michael wanted me to hear.  I was struck dumb by the very first number.  "The Ballad of Muk-Tu Annie" obviously a song about way out west in Canada, and Jimmy's first huge hit.  What blew me away was the wonderful use of banjo and harmonica used so brilliantly on this 'opening' number, usually reserved to compliment and exploit the artist and all of his ensuing work.  This entire CD, as you can see by the numbers Mr. Ordge recorded are both very original Canadian as well as super hits from American artists.  Ordge has a very attractive baritone singing voice, able to present both sides of good old-timey country as well as the C. W. McCall talk-song method, extremely well done too I might add.  It's his ability to 'present' a song with authentic vocal talent that makes him so easy to listen to, and of course 'like' to listen to.  This particular CD is without a doubt one of Canada's best representatives of what 'real' country is all about.  Mr. Ordge has a very easy to listen to voice as well as personality which he probably uses without even knowing it.  His use of the fiddle on many of these songs is particularly likable.  He also keeps the 'steel guitar' in abundance, so you can see this is actually a really 'real' country music offering.  In the late 50's and early 60's, Jimmy Arthur Ordge was so popular in Canada, no American country performer touring Canada in that time frame did it without Jimmy opening for them to make sure they had a big crowd.  Now in his early 80's Jimmy still records for Royalty Records, still sells a lot of merchandise, and still occasionally performs when time allows.  Michael T. Wall has nominated Mr. Ordge for America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame, and I'm sure if we can get him to come to LeMars, Iowa, for the ceremonies, that will happen.  I'm also going to forward this particular CD to the Rural Root Music Commission to hear their reaction to this particularly 'country' country CD.  As part of Royalty Record's "The Legends Series" it is doing very well in Canada, reminding those early country music fans that the show isn't over yet, there's still a lot of good country in their country, still performing, still recording.
