CD: HOWARD VOKES, JR. - 12 Songs of Inspiration

HOWARD VOKES, JR.
12 Songs of Inspiration
If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again - I Saw The Light - The Old Rugged Cross - Christ Who Came To Bethlehem - Were You There When They Crucified My Lord - Just A Closer Walk With Thee - My Loyal Friend Is Jesus Christ - Where He Leads Me I Will Follow - Life's Railway To Heaven - House Of Gold - God's Gonna Get You For That - Great Speckled Bird

I've been listening to Howard Vokes, Jr., for a number of years now.  He is the oldest of eight children of Howard Vokes, Sr., a close and dear friend of mine.  Quite frankly, when I first heard Howard Jr. attempting to make a record, I wasn't so sure he would be able to do it with quality.  He sure has convinced me that he can with this album of old-time gospel songs.  Not only a good selection of the really well liked gospel songs, he keeps that original Pennsylvania country sound alive and well in his backing.  Skeets Martin is on lead guitar, exactly as it should sound in songs of this nature.  Howard, Jr., plays rhythm guitar and bass, and does a remarkable job on both.  However the one that stands out as an instrumentalist is the Dobro player, Chet Hogue.  He really adds the icing to the cake with his imaginative and super well done leads. Howard Jr's dad, Howard Sr., like me is 80 years old, and still performs occasionally with his son.  I do the same thing, but I do it with my wife Sheila.  Both Sheila and I are familiar with this list of great old time gospel songs, they are our favorites too, so it's possible for me to recommend this CD to anyone who might want to 'remember' what those great old songs still sound like.  Howard Jr's renditions are extremely well done.  He has a kind of bass-baritone voice, and this style of voice really fits these old songs to a tee. This particular CD came out on Rosedale Music, which is a label in Ontario, Canada, so it's even nicer to know that Howard Sr's son is going international.  Howard Jr. still records with Patti Powell and Skeets Martin, and he plays bass for Hank King and Tex Belin.  With three children of his own, he stays busy passing along the heritage, and indeed the beauty of old-time gospel music with all his family.

CD: RANDY BARLOW - Dimensions

RANDY BARLOW
Dimensions
Love Dies Hard - Dixie Man - Never Loved Me A Woman - New York City - Willow Run - Sweet Dreams Man - Why Go Searching - Don't Give Up On Me - Can't Believe I Fell For That Line - Tucson, Mama & Home

You might remember Randy Barlow.  He was in the big-time some years ago (1976-1983), and then drifted away from the mainstream.  He appeared at the LeMars Iowa Festival of Country Music in 2015 for induction into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame.  He's aged, like all of us, but for those of us who still remember, this album "Dimensions," it's a real winner.  It actually came out in 1981, but Randy gave me a copy at the LeMars festival, and here it is now in my 'record review' box.  Wow, this single CD makes country music artists of today look like spoiled-babies.  Randy never left the 'soul' out of his country music, which so-called country artists today have unfortunately done.  Listening to Randy's powerful voice, especially on a song like "New York City Cowboys" one wonders at his incredible use of steel-guitar and fiddles, and also at the same time, wonder why so-called country music artists today abhor that same sound.  Randy Barlow is not afraid to be called 'country' but in today's climate I don't believe I would call him country.  He's much much more than that by today's genre standards.  I would call him 'Gold Country' for he certainly has that in his voice, still.  His love songs are extraordinary, and I'm sure attracts a lot of female fans to his side.  His biggest hit, you might remember was "24 Hours From Tulsa."  However he was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan.  I can see no reason why Randy Barlow shouldn't team up with Bobby Bare and put some of these authentic songs out for those fans of 'real' country music that are looking for the music of both of these fine artists.  This album "Dimensions" was produced by Fred Kelly, the composer of the first song "Love Dies Hard," and indeed, just as Randy makes it so believable, true love does die hard.  Randy contributed four of his own compositions to this very attractive CD.  I would hope that he continues his efforts in keeping country music in his style alive and well.  No one else is Randy, so it's up to you.  This CD goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission for their listen, and I'm hopeful they will keep that simple little descriptive term alive...."Gold Country"  "I want to go home, I want to go home, oh how I want to go home."  Hey Randy Barlow, Detroit City never sounded so good.

Just like his first album, back in the day. Scotty McCreery makes good on his sophomore album, The latest from Scotty McCreery is a really great album. This album showcases Scott's ability to come through with his signature sound. Scotty really seems to be able to sing a song in just the right tone. Seeing him perform on stage back to his American Idol days he was, and now continues to show the kind of artist that he is just a "great" country music star. His voice is one that just makes you feel good. His style to me is somewhat compared to the late Marty Robbins. He does have a style of his own that just presents himself in a wholesome way and is portrayed on all of his songs. His songs on his latest work like "Blue Jean Baby" and his most recent hit song "See you Tonight" is a prime example of what I hear listening to his music and watching his style. He is loud and clear as he sings his songs and seems at times he is singing to each and everybody that has their ears bent towards him. Scotty's age is no factor in his craft, in fact age is on his side, he has the voice at his age and this is the voice of legendary status I feel he will become one of those guys that just keeps putting out album after album and remains in the charts for a long time to come. In his words I will be "feelin it" and "Buzzin" until Scotty's MCcreery's latest  release on the radio.
