CD: DAVID GREEN - Like 1950 At The Grand Ole Opry

DAVID GREEN
Like 1950 At The Grand Ole Opry
A lot of artists are doing 'one song' releases these days in an effort to get 'country radio' to 'listen' to real country music.  Many of these kind of writings and traditional country music recordings are coming from unknown artists in all parts of the United States.  In other parts of the world as well.  Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, and most of Europe are all areas where the original pure down-home story-telling country music was, and still is, very popular and still existing, sometimes in large groups.  The artists and writers that still carry on that very American tradition of telling a 'story' in their songs, and performed with the beauty of simplicity still remain unknown, simply because the doors have been shut in Nashville for such a very very long time. The only way through those doors is with a lot of money.  And, that is definitely the problem with country music we hear on radio today.  The only writers and songs we hear are those that are either very wealthy or have a sponsor who is very wealthy.  That's not, and never has been, the 'value' placed on America's rural folks and the music they like, write, record, and play.  It definitely is not the 'value' placed on the huge number of incredibly gifted songwriters, vocalists, pickers, and fans of a musical genre that offered, not only likeable but readily understood, 'story's' inside the lyrics we hear.  David Green was inspired to write this song, even though he is self-admitted 'not' a songwriter, still, he was tremendously moved to write these words down, impossible for him not to.  It is a very personal 'statement' about what country music is today, and what it once was, and the difference between the two is a universe apart.  To keep the old tradition alive takes a certain amount of courage, and David Green has stepped to the plate, his guitar in hand, and hits, without a doubt, a home-run for 'real' traditional country music, the 'style' and 'support' still alive in rural America.  The fact that we can no longer share America's tremendously beautiful traditional style country music with the rest of America (or the world) isn't the problem.  The problem is that 'wealth' in the music business has prevented, and stopped dead in it's tracks, a musical genre to truly exist on an even playing field.  This song by David Green is definitely going to the Rural Roots Music Commission for their 'song of the year' award, and it's going to be interesting to see how David fares as he lifts his guitar in combat, to remind the world that the old-time style of country music is still alive and well in America.  He even describes, in his own words, the experience he had writing this song.  It's a down-home narration following the song.  Super well done David Green.

CD: GREG HAGER - In The Valley Below

GREG HAGER
In The Valley Below
In The Valley Below - Be Who You Are - Cowboy Dreaming - The Way With Life - Storm - This Time - The Northern Land - Life Is A Ride - Nothing But Time - Medora - Baby Once Again - Not Every Hero

I've reviewed Greg Hager's CD before, as a matter of fact one of his fine pieces of work won a "CD of the Year" award from the Rural Roots Music Commission.  He's back again with another fine piece of musical work.  Greg is a close friend of Terry Smith, both of them consummate songwriters.  Greg wrote all this songs on this excellent CD, finely produced at the Gene Breeden Studios in Nashville.  It's Greg's fine voice, and fine writing however, that makes this work stand out.  This is a kind of cowboy-classic-traditional country sound.  None of that bizarre music 'called' country today, but of course it isn't.  This piece of work is what we should be hearing on the radio as 'real' country, and if Greg has his way and say, that is indeed what will happen to his original works.  This CD is also an excellent example of what Nashville studios can do with 'real' country music if given the chance to produce it.  Greg was also a fan and friend of the famous cowboy, Chris LeDoux.  One of LeDoux's famous sayings goes like this...."Life IS a ride!  You see, it isn't the destination, but the stops you make along the way that will determine if you ever truly lived.  It's the miles that make us, not the years.  The songs on this CD are especially meaningful because they tell OUR story."  Greg adds a super song ""Life Is A Ride" in honor of this belief.  This is the song I like best on this wonderful piece of work.  Wow, that couldn't be more meaningful than ever today, especially the sad state of affairs top-40 country music is in. Super good musicians on this session:  Greg is doing the vocals of course, and he plays a 12-string guitar.  Dave Signs on keyboard; Kraig Hutchens on acoustic, lead, and baritone guitar; John Heinrich on Dobro and pedal steel; David Russel on fiddle (especially nice on "Cowboy Dreaming") and mandolin (very nice on "Storm"); and Mike Dunbar on bass.  Greg's wife, Andrea does back-up harmony singing, along with Gene Breeden, Barry Wayne, and Diane Berry.  Super good production, should be on 'country' radio, wherever 'real' country is played.  A super line-up of great songs on this CD.  I think the last song on this CD (Not Every Hero) is one of the best 'story' songs I've heard in a very long time.  It is so sad to see what has happened to so-called country music today, and the very sad situation where works like this has such an incredibly difficult and hard road to be heard by a large number of Americans.  Hopefully this will change in the very near future, because Greg Hager is worth listening to.  Yes, Greg Hager is worth listening to, Nashville!

CD: HELEN & IAN BRAITHWAITE - Amazing Grace

HELEN & IAN BRAITHWAITE
Amazing Grace
San Antonio Rose - Daddy's Hands - Divorce - Bird of Paradise - Amazing Grace/Will The Circle Be Unbroken - A White Sports Coat - After The Lights - Words - Y'all Come - Oh Baby Mine - Teen Angel - Wake up Little Suzie - Goodnight Kiwi

Helen Braithwaite is one incredibly gifted guitarist.  She plays quite often in the Chet Atkins style, but she also has the ability to play in the Merle Travis style.  Her husband Ian plays bass behind her.  Given, that is quite a feat, but this New Zealand country singer also has a very pleasant and beautiful voice that she very effectively uses singing some of America's finest traditional and classic country songs.  She and her husband are popular enough in New Zealand to have their own performance center, which contains momentos and remembrances from their very long career in country music.  This particular CD is much like how the Braithwaite's perform in a 'live' concert, just Helen and Ian singing and playing the songs much like those great old-time songs used to be played before the introduction of digilatized electronic phony perfection.  What a treat to hear it like it once sounded, but played with a 'new' love and affection for the old songs.  Helen also plays an old-time style organ, and she sometimes lays an old-time fiddle on top of some of these old songs.  What a treat for someone who really appreciates the older style of country music that was, and still is, 'real' country music.  Ian adds some vocals too, and is especially good on "A White Sport Coat."  This couple is making the trek to the LeMars, Iowa, Festival this year (Aug 31-Sept 6, 2015) and the audience will be thrilled to hear this old song again.  I especially liked their instrumental version of "Goodnight Kiwi" a popular country song in New Zealand.  I'm passing this CD along to the Rural Roots Music Commission to see what their opinion is, and we are definitely looking forward to seeing and hearing the Braithwaites once again at the LeMars Festival.  They will be on with Anita Bryant, Roni & Donna Stoneman, Jim Glaser, Wade Landry, Don King, Terry Smith, Red Johnson, and 600 more terrific musicians.

NASHVILLE, TN (May 15, 2015) – Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard celebrated the signing of two gifted songwriters yesterday (5/14) to their newly formed publishing company Tree Vibez Music. Drew Castleberry and Jimmy Deeghan join the budding roster, which includes emerging talent Jordan Schmidt.

FGL discovered Cleveland, OH Pop/R&B/Rap talent Castleberry by sheer chance on Instagram.

“We were immediately impressed,” shared Kelley. “Drew is one of the most talented artists we have ever seen. He sings, dances, writes, plays multiple instruments and is addicted to creating. We dig his passion for his craft and he was a must sign for Tree Vibez. The sky’s the limit for him and we are excited to be a part of the climb!”

Coming from a large musical family, Castleberry eagerly made the move to Nashville. He is the first artist-songwriter signed to Tree Vibez and currently adding to his catalogue, preparing for his debut EP.

A native of Eaton Rapids, MI, Deeghan’s long-standing history with FGL began as their guitar tech. Over the last couple of years, he became a part of the performing band and FGL has watched him grow as a songwriter, using every free second to learn, improve and focus whether at home or on the road.

“Anyone that gets in a writers' room with Jimmy knows how special he is,” said Hubbard. “He has the potential to get cuts across genres and can write anything. He has been grinding it out, working hard to hone in his craft. He has hooks for days and is a perfect fit for Tree Vibez.”

Tree Vibez Music is a fresh new publishing company with a moniker aptly inspired by Kelley’s custom treetop recording studio built by Pete Nelson for the hit show Treehouse Masters. At the heart of Tree Vibez Music there is a hunger to stay creative, work hard, and bring the good vibes. The superstar duo is taking their undeniable songwriting talent to the next level with this venture and is on the lookout for new talent across all genres.
