CD: MARY CHANNER PAUL - He Touched Me

MARY CHANNER PAUL
He Touched Me
I'm Using My Bible For A Road Map - He Touched Me - The Old Rugged Cross - I'd Rather Have God - Don't Let Me Walk Too Far From Calvary - Livin' in The Name of Love - In The Garden - How Great Thou Art - There Is Power In The Blood - Bring All Your Needs To The Altar

Mary Paul is one of our longer standing professional performers and recording artists who makes her home in Nebraska.  She just moved from the small rural town of Belgrade to another small rural town, Fullerton.  Out on the prairies, music can be very important to one's life style.  This is so with this marvelous vocalist and entertainer.  Don't have any information on who the players are that are backing Mary in this most excellent old-time gospel CD.  Opening song has a great banjo on it, which takes the listener immediately to the heart of this particular song, "I'm Using The Bible For A Road Map"  which is originally from the Appalachian region, and the addition of a mandolin to this mix is also very gratifying.  It all changes on the second song where the slower song brings us some very well played softer instruments, including an old piano, and a super good sounding steel.  Wish I knew who these great players are, I would share that with you, but it's Mary's voice that stands out so very well.  There is a harmony singer on "He Touched Me" which I am going to assume is daughter Molly.  What a very pleasant and pleasing sound this is, the old style done so well, the voice so sure and so sensitive.  That's what makes a true artist, and that is exactly what Mary Channer Paul is, a true artist. It amazes me how Mary moves so eloquently from a bluegrass sound to an old-time country sound to a classic country sound, and make it all 'fit' beautifully.  It's sort of my own philosophy of 'mixing' bluegrass and old time traditional country to bring together the original sound of what country music was all about in its early days.  This CD should do well wherever it can get airplay, and I would certainly recommend Europe, which has a penchant for this older style done beautifully.  Brings a kind of 'O Brother Where Art Thou' basic sound to all the songs, which were very well picked for this session.  Off to the Rural Roots Music Commission this one goes, and I do expect a very nice reaction from them.

CD: HOWARD VOKES, JR. - The Gospel Side

HOWARD VOKES, JR.
The Gospel Side
Beautiful Shores of Heaven - Wait For The Light To Shine -If Jesus Comes Tomorrow - Precious Lord - Amazing Grace - I'll Fly Away - What A Friend We Have In Jesus - My Loyal Friend Is Jesus Christ - Where He Leads Me - House Of Gold - Gods Gonna Get You For That - If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again - I Saw The Light - This Train - Old Rugged Cross - Were You There When They Crucified My Lord - Great Speckled Bird - All I Want For Christmas is Jesus

I've been a fan of Howard Vokes and his Grand Ole Opry catastrophe songs.  He has had a ton of them, and they are all terrific 'story' songs, written in the old way of country music.  That's not the case anymore, country music has changed so drastically, you are highly unlikely to hear a 'story' song these days.  This particular CD by Howard's son, Howard, Junior, is a very nice old-time gospel tribute to Jesus Christ.  It's too bad some of the so-called country music stars of today can't do this as well as Howard Junior does it.  It's all a heart-filled and heart-produced CD.  Probably not one that will get a lot of air play, but certainly one that will get a lot of record player play, simply because it is a very nice tribute to the music Howard Junior loves, and a very nice tribute to his Savior, Jesus Christ.  Howard plays the rhythm guitar and bass, and also does all the vocals.  Skeets Martin is on lead guitar (very nicely done), and Chet Houge is on the Dobro (also very nicely done).  I would suspect that 'dad' Howard Vokes Sr., is lurking in the studio keeping the session going on it's obvious course of producing some really good old-timey gospel music.  The entire project is very heart warming, not pushed, not hurried, not aspriring for perfection, and to me that is absolutely what original traditional and classic country music was all about.  Nice job, well done, Howard Junior.  Tell your dad you did good.  Howard Junior dedicated this very nice effort to his mother.

CD: EMMA LIN HEYEN - Proud To Be A Cowgirl

EMMA LIN HEYEN
Proud To Be A Cowgirl

Blue - Oh Shenandoah - Crazy - Cry Me A River - I Fall To Pieces - Josephine - Cupid's Got A Shotgun - Walkin' After  Midnight - Daddy Was A Yodeling Cowboy - Cowboy Sweetheart - American Tears - On My Own - Memory - How Great Thou Art

Emma Heyen is without a doubt one of the very best country vocalists we have in Iowa right now.  Her voice is astonishingly refreshing and incredibly right on the button.  Her control of her vibrato makes her one of the most beautiful young singers we could possibly have, doing the songs that appear on this CD.  Rick Andersen is the engineer putting Emma through the hoops with sound tracks, but it's a delightful experience and Emma's voice fits very nicely.  Her selection of material are songs that she does 'live' with Rick & Harriette Andersen, and it's always a pleasure to hear her sing.  Rick & Harriette begin to add some backing when she begins "Crazy" and it sounds just right.  It's a simplified backing, but for me simplicity is the epitome of sophistication.  What it does, it magnifies Emma's voice to it's maximum.  I also noticed the 'tracks' are not over done either, a very nice selection for backing.  Emma is also a very avid 'cow-girl' has her own horse, and the front and back cover of this brand new CD shows her in all her 'cow-girl' regalia, so it's no wonder she called the CD "Proud To Be A Cowgirl."  I wasn't going to review this particular CD until we got to California for the winter, but I couldn't hold off any longer, I was very anxious to hear this new project of Emma.  I wish I could pick one or two songs out that I find 'best' but I can't do it, all of the songs are incredibly well done.  Listening to this young woman sing some exemplary old-time country, and then go into "Cry Me a River" where her 'jazz' qualities lead the listener directly to where she is going with her voice.  What a very lovely listening experience.  I also like Emma's good sense in closing her brand new CD with a gospel song.  "How Great Thou Art" is a wonderful way to end an already exuberant music listening experience. This CD is definitely going to the Rural Roots Music Commission.  I know what they will do.
