Superstar Songwriters Dean Dillon, Jamey Johnson, Buddy Cannon, Scotty Emerick & More Salute Hank Cochran During 30th Annual Frank Brown International Songwriters' Festival

November 16th Event Kicks Off Festival's Final Evening Of Song

Nashville, TN (October 13, 2014) - Superstar songwriters Dean Dillon and Jamey Johnson will salute Hank Cochran at a tribute concert on November 16.  The pair will host the event, gathering friends of the late songwriter for what promises to be an unforgettable night of music and memories.  Top-tier tunesmith Scotty Emerick ("Beer For My Horses," "I Love This Bar"), joins the lineup, which also includes hit songwriter/producer Buddy Cannon ("Set 'Em Up Joe," "Give It Away;" Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson) and singer/songwriter Jesse Whitley, son of the late Keith Whitley.  The tribute kicks off the final evening of the 10-day long 30th Frank Brown International Songwriters' Festival, held "live on the line" from the world-famous FloraBama Lounge.  The club is located at 17401 Perdido Key Drive, Perdido Key,Florida; the music starts at 6 p.m., and more information can be found HERE

Dillon, Johnson and Cannon all knew the late Cochran well: Dean and Buddy were longtime friends and co-writers of Hank's, while Jamey became close with the NSAI Hall of Famer in his later years.  In 2012, Johnson released the Grammy-nominated LIVING FOR A SONG:  A TRIBUTE TO HANK COCHRAN.  "If I had to dream up the best influence for songwriters, I couldn't have done any better than Hank," Johnson says.  "That's what he was - not just for me, but for Willie and for a lot of people - just a helpful friend.  If he knew you needed help with something, he could help you. He was there."  Johnson hopes this Tribute will help carry Hank's philosophy forward.  "I want to be that kind of man for the people in my life; same as Hank.  He influenced me, not only as an artist and songwriter, but also as a person."
Dean and Hank shared a love of boats, and many of their songs were written on the waterways of Tennessee and Florida.  As a writing team, they are perhaps best known for George Strait's "Ocean Front Property" and "The Chair," and Keith Whitley's classic "Miami, My Amy."  "Hank was definitely one-of-a-kind," Dillon reflects.  "We had some remarkable times together and I'm happy to be a part of this tribute.  His legacy deserves a tip of the hat."
The Cannon and Cochran association was a long and fruitful one.  The two shared co-writer credits on the smash hit "Set 'Em Up Joe" and, as a producer, Cannon's door was always open to Hank.  "He was absolutely one of the best writers of our time," notes Cannon.  "He was the world's best songplugger and a great friend who is very much missed."
A devoted fan of the FBISF, Cochran performed on the event's many stages over the years.  Club owner and Fest founder Joe Gilchrest recalls, "Hank was a great supporter of this festival.  He was a wonderful friend to me, to songwriters and to musicians of all stripes.  He is sorely missed, but I know these guys will do him proud."
Cochran's discography reads like a "Who's Who" of contemporary music.  His songs have been recorded by Chet Atkins, Junior Brown, Jimmy Buffett, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Bing Crosby, Vern Gosdin, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tom Jones, Loretta Lynn, Dean Martin, Wayne Newton, Elvis Presley, Reba, Linda Ronstadt, George Strait, and Lee Ann Womack.  He penned numerous classic tunes, including "I Fall To Pieces," "She's Got You," "Set 'Em Up Joe," "Is It Raining At Your House," and "Don't You Ever Get Tired of Hurting Me."  As a recording artist, Hank first found fame in the 1950s when he and Eddie Cochran (no relation) formed the rockabilly duo, The Cochran Brothers.  Hank topped the Americana Music Chart in 1997 with DESPERATE MEN: THE LEGEND AND THE OUTLAW.  In 2002, he released his last CD, LIVIN' FOR A SONG: A SONGWRITER'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, to much critical acclaim.  The disc's title track was featured on Johnson's 2012 CD, with additional vocals by Willie, Merle and Kris Kristofferson.
Hank will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame later this month.  The award follows his 1967 inclusion in the Country Music Foundation's Walkway of Stars, the unanimous vote that earned him his place in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1974) and a place in the Mississippi Musicians' Hall of Fame (2003).  His catalog has generated more than 36 million performances, which, if played back-to-back, would amount to more than 200 years of continuous airplay.

Last Week in Country Music

Last Week in Country Music

Just got off the phone with Ron Wilburne who makes his home near Sacramento, California.  He's a super good singer and guitar picker in the 'real' country music vein.  So is his dad Dave, who is a road warrior if there ever was one.  It's so remarkable to hear this father-son duo sing and play good old-time terrific traditional and classic country music with a little folk sound thrown in to make it even better, and a little mountain style in the harmony to make it truly a nice experience to listen to.  Sheila, Bobbie Lhea, and I will be headed for the California hills before long, and we'll try to connect with Ron once we get out there.

Alan Jackson, one of the few traditional and classic country artists left in Nashville usually lets his music do the talking, but at a recent concert at the Country Music Hall of Fame, he talked a lot about his songs, his life, career, and famous songs.  Standing ovations continuously.  His show lasted 2 1/2 hours, that even included some talk about his origins in Georgia, his hardships in Nashville getting started, and his new Nashville Restaurant that he is just now opening.  That to be done with a special surprise concert at the restaurant.  He was a little critical of today's 'pop' country artists, and wished they'd return to a more 'country' country.

Emily Phillips won the J. Mullkey Kent award and first place in the open division in the Arkansas State Old Time Fiddle Championship in late September at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View.  Phillip's love of old-time folk music comes naturally.  She's a native of Mountain View, Arkansas, which is proudly self-proclaimed as the 'Folk Music Capital of the World.'  I'm sure there would be others nominating themselves for that same distinction, however when it comes from such a lovely young girl as Emily, it's believable when she says, "You can go to the courthouse square any night of the week, and there are musicians everywhere playing folk music."  She's a freshman at UALR, and began playing the fiddle in the fourth grade.

Someone out there owns a little piece of Willie Nelson, and they had to pay $37,000 to get it.  An auction in Phoenix, Arizona on Oct. 5, was selling items from Waylon Jenning's estate.  One of the items up for bid was Willie's red braids, which he gave to Jennings in 1983 to show support for Jennings sobriety.  The story gets even better once you know Willie presented Jennings with the hair at a party thrown by Johnny Cash that same year.  It's not exactly clear who bought the braids, but you can be sure my hair is now for sale and we'll use the money to fix the roof on the Pioneer Music Museum.

Western Nebraska fans of bluegrass music will depend on someone new to bring quality acts to the annual bluegrass festival at the fairgrounds in North Platte, Nebraska.  Courtney Ewald, was announced as the newest President during the groups annual meeting.  The current president Donna Mentzer will stay on for a year to assist in the transition.  Ewald says she hopes to expand the festival and bring more family style entertainment to the event.  I love her statement about running a festival....."Ideally, maybe we could even extend the concert out or the festival out to maybe even four days, four or even five days.  The longer it goes, then the bigger it gets.  The biggest attraction would definitely be the bands, the high name bands and I look forward to keeping it like that too, hiring out the nice big bands and not necessarily even the big bands, but just the real good music that people enjoy listening to"  Well good luck North Platte, it will definitely be interesting to see the direction of your bluegrass festival.

Larry Cordle, who was inducted into our Hall of Fame this year at LeMars, has just released a landmark new album "All Star Duets" to global radio.   It's been in the making for 11 years and has some pretty 'hot' players on it, including Dierks Bentley, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Terry Clark, Kevin Denny, Diamond Rio, Alison Krauss, Kathy Mattea, Daryle Singletary, Travis Tritt, Del McCoury, Ricky Skaggs, and Trisha Yearwood.  Even our own Randy Kohrs is on the final cut.

CD: HOWARD STEELE - The Little Country Store

HOWARD STEELE
The Little Country Store

The Little Country Store - A Million Guitars - The Bright Lights of Reno - In A Perfect World - This Buds For you - The Hero the Country Laid To Rest - Little Boxes - As Sure As Niagara Falls - I Get The Blues When I Remember You - Cadillac Woman - Don't Cry Joni - Sime Me Faded Love Again

It doesn't matter to me how you lay it, if it's country, it's country, and that's good enough for me.  Howard Steele makes his home in Monroe, Oregon, and he has put together some excellent 'real' country musicians for this very satisfying CD of traditional and classic country music.  He has also put together a group of songs I have not heard before, with the names of the writers.  I am assuming he knows these writers personally, because the feeling he puts into each and every one of them is the true objective of any true country artist,.  Alton Wayne Crump wrote the cover song "The Little Country Store" and he's also the engineer in the studio.  Roger Berggren plays the most different instruments, fiddle (he does a super job on "This Buds For You") , acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar, steel, mandolin, and even the bass.  Gordon Kkuryluk plays the piano on one of the songs, and Ellen Wilson adds some excellent old-time harmony to Howard's nice old-time voice.  Some excellent acoustic guitar picking throughout this adventure, and it surely does make the songs sound good.  I even like Howard's voice, it's kind of old-timey, and at the same time true to the objective of staying 'true' to the original country music genre that is so lacking in today's modern country music world.  Little boxes little boxes used to  be about ticky tacky houses all looking alike in the world of folk music.  In Howard's musical world it's about 'pill' boxes for all the pills older people have to take.  I liked the song "Don't Cry Joni" maybe because we have a politician running for a high post in Iowa, and her first name is Joni. No connection there, but the song is super.  Howard and his vocalist partner Ellen Wilson do a great job putting the song over.  All together this album is a great classic country piece of work.  Off it goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission even though it's early in the running for a CD of the Year award, but I'm thinking that might happen.

CD: ROY KING - Hell's Highway

ROY KING
Hell's Highway

Mining Man - I'd Do It Again - Born To Ramble - Cut Back Blues - Lost In The Dust - Ride To Hell - Jus Walkin - I Wish I Wasn't So Poor

What an interesting 'original music' CD this is.  I don't know who Roy King is, and I don't even know how to contact him.  Not much on the internet either.  Two of his CD's found their way to my desk during the LeMars Festival, and I do not know who left them for me.  Roy King is one super songwriter, but even better he's one super singer.  This Cd is really a 'finished product' not a songwriter's demo.  The harmonica on the very first song is absolutely incredible, so are all the other musicians that are bringing the 'sounds' of Roy King alive on this CD.  A lot of his stuff was recorded at the North 40 Studios, and it's pretty much songs dedicated to anybody who has had to go through tough times, and I guess that would be a lot of upper Midwest folks these days.  It's kind of interesting to listen to Roy wrap the story around an idea, and then, with a little help from his friends, get himself out of the hard luck blues.  The music on this CD is kind of Honky-Tonk like, maybe even a touch of rock occasionally.  I was impressed with every song on this CD, even the way the drums are played on "Lost In The Dust."  Don't have the names of the musicians, but they are all good.  It's Roy King however that is the candle bringing them together.  They are like a circle around his creativity, and this is very apparent, once again, on "Lost In The Dust" when the fiddle  brings the lead back to the electric guitar.  Nicely done. It should also be noted that Roy King has a very good singing voice.  He lost me for awhile on "Ride To Hell" which gets to close to rock and roll to be good country.  He makes up for it on "Jus Walkin' taking us right back to his honky-tonk sound.  Good job all the way around.  I'll be trying to find out a little more about Roy King.  I have another of his CD's to review, but don't know where they came from.
