CD: DONNA SCHEER - Simply Donna

DONNA SCHEER
Simply Donna
Back Seat Driver - Georgetown - Nothing At All - Miners - Lights of Santa Fe - Caleb Myer - Away Down the Road - Sabrina - Locks of Love - Rocky Mountain Sky - Crossing the Bar

Donna Scheer is a lovely young woman from Colorado who has the 'gift.'  What do I mean when I say someone has the 'gift?'  It means that person has an unstoppable desire to be a music maker.  Doesn't matter if it's a guitar in their hands, or a dulcimer, or a zither, it's a person with a deep desire to write and play music.  A deep desire to write words to share with friends and strangers alike.  A deep desire to 'reveal' one's personality through music.  That's what Donna Scheer does.  This particular CD is just her lovely very folk-like voice and an acoustic guitar.  I would have preferred the guitar to be down just a bit so I can better hear her words, because the words are the secret Donna shares with the entire universe.  How can I say that?   Well, who knows who else is out there in the universe?  And, this recording is here to stay.  It's not going away, it's here to stay, to share, to hear, to reminisce, to remember.  Not all of these songs are Donna's originals, only four of them are, but she has selected some of the very best folk style songs she could have possibly picked to represent her voice and guitar backing.  One of my favorite cities in America is Santa Fe, it's just a beautiful one-of-a-kind city, it's very personal, and it's very musical in all it's being. That's why Eliza Gilkyson was able to write such a personal song about a town, and why I can connect to it so easily, and I'll be that's what Donna feels too when she sings this song.  Donna also plays lap dulcimer, mandolin, harmonica, ukulele, Dobro and various other softer stringed instruments, all of it leaning a little toward the soft folk sound I am so appreciative of.  I will definitely send this CD along to the Rural Roots Music Commission who I hope will take a good listen.  We would certainly welcome Donna to our old-time music gathering in LeMars, Iowa, and I'm hoping the Rural Roots folks hear the same thing I hear.  She would be so welcome at the Village Stage where no microphones or electrical instrumentation barges into an acoustic set of music.  Keep it up Donna.

CD: GARY LEE TOLLEY - Thanks A Lot

GARY LEE TOLLEY
Thanks A Lot

Thanks A Lot - Pick It Up Today - Drift (Where The Currents Take Me) - Lonesome Hobo Willie - Gold Ring On Her Pillow - The Walnut Table - Sing A Country Song - Country Girl - The Red Top Grill - San Pedro Bay

As I begin this review, I have just returned from the Christensen Field House in Fremont, Nebraska, where I heard one of the most astonishing singers and bands currently doing 'live' country music.  Patsy Godley and the Country Classic Band (from Virginia).  They were there to be awarded the "Traditional Country Music CD of the Year" from the Rural Roots Music Commission.  Right now, much to my surprise, I am listening to a young man from the same area of Virginia as Patsy and her band.  He's a very "up" songwriter with a super nice voice to match what he's writing.  The first song of course is not his, it's one of Ernest Tubb's great songs.  It too however, is up-tempo, and sounds good that way.  Gary is much like Patsy Godley.  He's got a super good country voice, and he's a super good writer.  I especially liked "Drift" which is a timeless story song about 'on the road' pursuing the American Dream of trying to be successful in the music business.  It's getting more and more difficult these days, but there's a nice piece of harmonica on this song played by Mike Schrimpf that helps us keep our focus on what 'real' country music is 'really' all about.  That's what I like about this CD, Mike goes right into the next intro to "Lonesome Hobo Willie" with a fine mellow harmonica lick that fits just fine.  Gary did a good job with his studio musicians, which Dick McVey helped put together along with playing bass himself. Gary's voice seems most sincere on another of his originals, "Gold Ring On Her Pillow," a sad song to be sure. These songs are all 'story' songs, exactly what country music has been about all these many years, and exactly what country music at the top-40 level is not about.  "The Walnut Table" brings a super nice soft mandolin lead played by Charlie Vaughn (or Deanie Richardson (isn't she part of the Chieftains?), not sure which), but there's also a very lovely 'flute' sound on this track which isn't recognized in the player list.  Super nice, we have a writer in Iowa, Jack Langley who is in a similar vein.  Wow, I sure would like to hear these two writers bump heads sometime.  Lots of other extremely gifted musicians on this session; Mike Baker on electric and acoustic guitar, Tommy White on steel guitar, Eddie Anderson on percussion, Don Drilling on acoustic guitar, and some of the best backup vocalists in the business.  My favorite is "Sing A Country Song" quite frankly because I'm so disappointed in so-called 'country' music today on top-40 radio, it just isn't, but this is, whistling and all.  My very best wishes to Gary Lee Tolley and his super good country songs.  This CD goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission for their listening pleasure, for I know what they like.  Hang in there Gary, you might have to make the trip west to Fremont, Nebraska, too.  It takes two days to get there, and two months to get back home because like Patsy Godley and the Country Classics Band, we kidnap them and make them play every day for two months.  Keep it coming Virginia, you're better than Tennessee right now.

Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton And More Mark "Country's Arrival in Vegas"

Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton And More Mark "Country's Arrival in Vegas"

NASHVILLE, TN - Oct. 6, 2014 – The inaugural Route 91 Harvest, brought to Vegas by the creators of premier country music festivals Watershed and Faster Horses, in collaboration with MGM Resorts International, took place at MGM Resorts Village this past weekend with over 20,000 in attendance and rave reviews from fans and critics.

The lavish country music festival kicked-off on Friday night with headliner Blake Shelton setting the pace for the high roller weekend with Las Vegas Review Journal heralding the festival as "Country's arrival in Vegas."

On Saturday, Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert continued the 3-day country music event playing sets “among the most fun and raucous of the fest[ival]” – Las Vegas Review Journal.

Route 91 Harvest, whose name is taken from the original name of the Las Vegas Boulevard on which it sits, ended Sunday’s festivities with a bang with Jason Aldean closing out the show.  "The final artist to take the stage at the festival, Aldean started and ended emphatically, " said Rolling Stone Country of the last set of the weekend.

Fans also enjoyed the festival in true Vegas- style with the option of luxury private suites providing lounge seating, drinks service and catering as well as viewing decks with multiple platforms giving fans the opportunity to see the stage close up, the site as a whole and great views of the infamous Las Vegas Strip surrounding the festival.
“I honestly didn't know what to expect when we decided to launch a country festival of this scale in Las Vegas, but this weekend has far surpassed any exceptions I could have had,” said Brian O'Connell, Live Nation President of Country Touring. “I’m beyond thrilled that Sin City has embraced us and our concept with open arms.”

Carter Family and Johnny Cash Join MIM’s Artist Gallery

Exhibits Dedicated to the Carter Family and Johnny Cash Join MIM’s Artist Gallery
MIM to Feature Instruments Played by the Iconic “First Family of Country Music” and the “Man in Black”

PHOENIX -- Ocotber 6, 2014 -- The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix recently unveiled exhibits honoring the Carter Family and Johnny Cash. The exhibits, located in MIM’s Artist Gallery, provide guests with an overview of the musical careers of the artists and their historical impact.
Items on display in the Carter Family and Johnny Cash exhibits have never before been displayed for the public and come to MIM on loan from John Carter Cash, son of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, and Dale Jett, grandson of A.P. Carter. The items will be on display through April 2016.

“When I first visited MIM, I was excited by its inimitable beauty and scale. It has been a wondrous blessing to work with the staff there and help bring about the Carter Family / Johnny Cash display,” said John Carter Cash. “I feel it is inspired and shows a unique view into the history of country music that cannot be seen anywhere else.”
The music of the Carters (A.P., Sara and Maybelle Carter) has been celebrated for nearly a century. The trio, which recorded more than 250 songs, is widely recognized for helping launch country music’s commercial beginnings and for inspiring many artists in later genres including bluegrass and rock.
Johnny Cash, who came to be known as the “Man in Black,” bucked music industry norms, singing of America’s marginalized populations and famously making two live albums in prisons with inmate audiences. Despite struggles with drug addiction, he went on to achieve superstardom, selling more than 50 million albums and winning new audiences into the 21st century.
Items on display in the Carter Family and Johnny Cash exhibits include:
A.P. Carter’s 1929 Martin 00-28 guitar, played by the original Carter Family

June Carter Cash’s custom Orthey autoharp and fingerpicks
Johnny Cash’s black Manuel Cuevas stage suit which was worn in concert and features embroidered acorns and oak leaves
Johnny Cash’s black Martin D-42JC signature guitar which was played in concert and on several of his “American” album
Johnny Cash’s 1936 Martin 5-18 guitar which was played by Cash, family and friends in Cash’s home and inlaid in the early 1970s with acorns and oak leaves
Johnny Cash’s 2002 Grammy award for “Give My Love to Rose,” Best Male Country Vocal Performance
The exhibits also feature photographs from the Grand Ole Opry Archives and performance footage from several sources.
“It would be difficult to overstate the significance of these artists in American music,” said MIM curator for North America, Dr. Cullen Strawn. “It’s an honor to share their objects, songs and stories with our guests.”
The Carter Family and Johnny Cash exhibits join the ranks of other country music-focused exhibits at MIM. MIM’s Artist Galley features instruments played by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Toby Keith, Taylor Swift and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In MIM’s United States/Canada Gallery, the Country exhibit displays items belonging to Marty Robbins, Buck Owens, Kix Brooks and others.
Entrance to MIM’s Artist Gallery is included with general museum admission.
The Musical Instrument Museum is located at 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard in Phoenix (corner of Tatum and Mayo Boulevards, just south of Loop 101). For general museum information and a full schedule of events, visit MIM.org or call 480.478.6000.
