After The Storm" Platz 2 beim Eurovision Song Contest 2014!

The Common Linnets

Country Music Big In Europe

Country Music Big In Europe

Since May 10, 2014 Country Music has a new home! It is not America, not Canada, not Australia, not Asia! It is Europe! Believe it or not, but millions of music lovers in Europe voted during the Eurovison Song Contest for the duo The Common Linnets with the their song “Calm After The Storm” coming in #2.

The Common Linnets based in the Netherlands are Ilse DeLange and Waylon. They recorded an amazing 12 song country album in Nashville, TN.

1. Calm After The Storm
2. Hungry Hands
3. Arms Of Salvation
4. Still Loving After You
5. Sun Song
6. Lovers & Liars
7. Broken But Home
8. Before Complete Surrender
9. Where Do I Go With Me
10. Time Has No Mercy
11. Give Me A Reason
12. When Love Was King
13. Love Goes On

The Common Linnets are now building a fan base with US country music audiences. Remember Keith Urban? When his record label introduced him to the public in Germany they said, “We're proud to present Rock & Pop artist Keith Urban from Australia”. Now they can tell German and European music lovers what kind of music Nashville artists are really playing. It doesn’t matter what country they come from. What’s important is where they're based and what kind of music they record.

Since The Common Linnets made it to #2 at the Eurovison Song Contest 2014, Europe is more than ready for good country music.

CD: PETER SHEAHAN And Friends

PETER SHEAHAN
And Friends

An Old country Farmer - Secondhand Love - Excuse Me Darling - My Special Dad - Her Weight Makes no Difference - Mothers Are So Proud - Wind on My Back - Songs My Mother Sang - Stronger Than Ever - White Crosses - Hold The Ladder Lord - Smile - I Don't Live in Another Man's Pocket - Enjoy What You Have - Wrong Frame Of Mind - Where's My Teddy Bear

Peter wrote seven of the sixteen songs on this delightful CD.  He's an Australian, with an incredible hold on what country music should sound like.  This CD 'And Friends' is exactly that.  Although I don't have a lot of information about what is happening with this release, I believe it is Peter who is singing his own compositions.  The rest of the songs are done by friends, male and female alike.  It's kind of like listening to a very nice one-song concert with a lot of very talented artists participating.  Peter himself, is an accomplished country music singer/songwriter, and travels throughout Australia performing.  His song "Wind On My Back" must be a 'capture' of his traveling experiences. He captures the hearts of his audiences and ensures a good time is had by all when he is entertaining.  He has received a number "Song of the Year' from the famous Tamworth Festival.  Backing throughout this project is pretty much basic traditional country, steel, drums, guitars, bass, occasional fiddle, Dobro, all in all a very nice adventure. I listened to every one of the songs on this CD, and I'm actually quite impressed with what these folks are doing with good old American country music.  It's the real deal, and though I don't like the drums too far out in front, rather I'd like to hear the vocalist well enough to be able to understand every word, that's about the only fallacy I can find on this entire recording.  And that was with a female singer on "Where's My Teddy Bear."  All in all this CD needs to go to the Rural Roots Music Commission, who like me, likes their country music country.  Peter is at 109 Simpsons Road, Eaglehawk Bendigo, Victoria 3556, Australia.

CD: RED JOHNSON The Local Entertainer

RED JOHNSON
The Local Entertainer

The Local Entertainer - Cloud Over Paradise - I'd Rain All Over You - A Day With No Sunshine - What Kind of World - There's A Grand Ol Opry Show Playing Somewhere - Big Brave Me - A Woman's Lips - Hidden Feelings - Anything but Me - Moving To Nevada - It Burns All The Way Down - Mrs. Johnson - Grey Eyes - Railroaded - too Much Of You Went With Him - Everyday People - touching Me Again - Give Her Some Happiness - What Man Wouldn't Try - Christmas In Heaven

Many of you reading this review know Red Johnson.  He makes his home in Minnesota, but he's usually found out on the road, in Texas or California, or Florida, or beyond, working on his music.  He's been writing country music, 'real' country music for quite a few years now, and so far his biggest hit, recorded for Capitol Records, has been "There's A Grand Ole Opry Show Playing Somewhere."  It's a kicker to say the least, but this CD puts a whole different slant on Red Johnson's songwriting ability.  Red just recently signed a contract with a music publishing-placement company in New Mexico, and so far he's had several up-front advances made to use his music, quite a lot of money really.  For this particular project "The Local Entertainer" he wanted to bring out of the basement some of his earlier works.  He dusted off the masters and with the help of Hal Rugg, Lloyd Green, Pete Drake, Dick Mileski, Russ Hicks, and Charlie McCoy, I believe you will find one of the best 'traditional' country CD's available today.  Red has also written songs with other songwriters, and he gives adequate credit for all that he worked with.  I really liked 'The Local Entertainer" which came out in 1963, and could be the story of my own life.  Red is just absolutely incredible on these old masters.  "A Day With No Sunshine" is a wonderful piece of work.  And then you hear a song like "Grey Eyes" and it just pushes you right to the back of your chair.  This is one of the few songs Red didn't write on this album, but it's incredibly well done as a vocalist.  I've never heard the Red Johnson that could be described as 'psychedelic' but he presents a really nice side and version of this style of music, and guess what, he still keeps it country.  My guess is we're going to hear some of this music, probably on a television show, in your own living room, coast to coast, if not internationally.  That's what his new contract calls for, so if you hear something that sounds familiar, but you're not quite sure, count on it being Red Johnson.  Not as young as he was when he did these masters, but it's Red Johnson just the same.  Kudos Red, extremely well done.  Red is at arvidjohn@aol.com

CD: AVIS GROSECLOSE Fiddlin' Favorites

AVIS GROSECLOSE
Fiddlin' Favorites

Over The Waves - Frauline - Faded Love - Wednesday Night Waltz - Bull Whackers Shottish - San Antonio Rose - Carol County Blues - Old Joe Clark - Time's Clock Waltz - Crooked Stovepipe - Maiden's Prayer - Orange Blossom Special

I have loved old-time fiddle music since I was just a small tot listening to it on Saturday nights out behind an old dance hall in Norfolk, Nebraska, where my parents went to dance the night away.  Kids were a nuisance at a dance hall, and after mom had carefully tucked my younger brother Martin into bed on the back seat of the car, and me in the front seat, off she went to dance with dad.  I couldn't sleep a wink, just as soon as that old-time country dance music started up, I was right outside the window where the band was playing, listening to the incredibly gifted fiddler playing song after song.  Avis Groseclose is one of those fabulous fiddlers that still makes the old songs come alive.  She lives in Apache Junction, Arizona, and was brought to my attention by other Arizona winterers, Jerry & Maggie Hughes.  To anyone who remembers the old dance songs, every one that Avis has on this CD will be recognizable. What's so neat about the entire presentation is Floyd Tidd on a soft guitar backing with light bass.  Just right for easy listening.  For anyone that would like to experience what that old-time fiddle music really sounded like, you will find it on this CD, incredibly well done.  Avis must have a tremendous ear, she never misses a note.  She's going into 'America's Old Time Fiddler's Hall of Fame' this year in LeMars, Iowa, Aug 25-31, at the big old-time music festival there.  I'm so pleased to be able to listen to something that takes me back to my youth so easily, and so well played, it tends to make me youthful, just listening.  You'll get to hear her at LeMars, she intends bringing an entire 8-piece band with her.  Can you imagine how 'Faded Love' is going to sound on the dance floor there?  Welcome to the Hall of Fame Avis, and welcome to LeMars for the big old-time dance.  Avis is at eneesi@gmail.com  I kind of liked "Crooked Stovepipe" mostly because I have never heard it before, and it's a great up-tempo dance tune.

Kris Kristofferson another incredibly gifted songwriter!

I've been trying really hard to get in contact with Kris Kristofferson, another incredibly gifted songwriter.  Since Glen Campbell has now receded from public view because of his Alzheimer's problem, we are all aware that Kristofferson is suffering from similar symptoms.  He's forgetting faces, words, deeds, etc.  However he did not cancel his tour to Australia, and just so you know how it's going, my dear friend Ginny Peters from New Zealand sent a small press release review of Kris's recent show.  Bruce Quirey wrote this..... "Country music singer songwriter Kris Kristofferson knows only too well he's in his twilight years.  But last night, like a defendant in a witness box, the 77-year old let his fans at the Dunedin Town Hall know he's not gone yet.  Tall, with his white hair and beard, and dressed casually in black, the singer-songwriter opened with no introduction to a hushed audience.  Under the glaring theatre lights, alone on stage with only a guitar he looked lonely.  His voice, never his strongest asset anyway, faltered at times and his fingers took their time to warm on the strings.  But it was the lyrics, especially that people came for and words hung in the air as the crowd sat in almost reverence.  Kristofferson has counted as collaborators, confidantes, and drinking co-conspirators such luminous county artists as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson.  With many of his peers gone, Krisofferson's latest album is titled 'Feeling Mortal" from which he offered up a taste, showing he's lost none of his introspection.  "I've begun to soon descend, like the sun into the sea."  His songwriting explores human emotion, returning often to themes of love and regret, with honesty and humour  It seems simple but carries plenty of weight.  And, thankfully, one after another, he delivered his old songs, such as Casey's Last Ride, Me and Bobby McGee, Loving Her Was Easier, Billy Dee, Just the Other Side of Nowhere, Sunday Morning Coming Down,  and yes, To Beat the Devil.  Later, he was joined on stage by his daughter Kelly, on vocals and banjo, and while she was by his side, he stood taller and sang stronger.  It seemed some of the lines he wrote 40 years ago were for this moment, the twilight years.  And if he was on trial, he found a sympathetic and grateful jury.

Willie Nelson is releasing Band of Brothers

Willie Nelson just never quits.  He is releasing a new album.  "Band of Brothers" should be out in June on Sony Legacy Recordings.  Nine of the songs on this album Willie wrote, so you know we are looking forward to something good.  Willie said "I got on a kind of writing kick, and it's good to be writing again."  Willie is staying on the right side of right as well, he recorded "The Wall" which he says was his way of apologizing for some of his previous behaviors as he dealt with life on the road.  "I had been on tour, and the next thing you know, I hit the wall.  Actually it turns out to be a pretty good song."  Expect to see this new CD released on June 17, day after my birthday.  I'll be 78, but Willie is a young 81.  Willie also donated major portions of his correspondence, records, awards, and more, adding significant heft to an enviable Texas-centric music collection, to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas.  The family papers of pioneering folklorist and musicologist John A Lomax and the archives from the Armadillo World Headquarters, where hippies and rednecks peaceably mingled and where progressive country music was born, have already been donated to the Museum.  The papers in these two collections alone, will likely have scholars and researchers eager to start digging.  They include letters and photos from fans, fellow musicians Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash, and dignitaries such as President Bill Clinton and late Texas Governor Ann Richards.  The material also includes platinum records and other awards, posters from Nelson's Fourth of July picnics, portraits, screenplays, books and personal items.
