Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers at The Orange Blossom Opry in Weirsdale, Florida
Written By: Scott Sexton
Being a huge fan of Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers is one thing in life that I am very proud of. So, to say it was exciting to see them perform live at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weirsdale, Florida is an understatement. It was something that was marked on the calendar and looked at every day in waiting. Well when the show day finally arrived, Larry Gatlin was announced and came out by himself. He welcomed the crowd and proceeded to explain that over the years, he has heard people refer to the "brothers" as his backup singers. Larry went on to describe their sound is what makes up the "Gatlin Brothers," and without them, the sound would not be the same. So, in other words, they are not his backup singers, they are the group. He then announced Rudy and Steve Gatlin and they joined him on stage, followed by the band. It was clear that as soon as the boys took their places, the crowd was in for a wild show. Kicking things off with the “Star Spangled Banner,” Larry and the boys bring some true patriotic tones to every word. The audience loved it, which helped open the hearts of everyone watching. Moving the show right along, Larry kicked off “Night Time Magic” with ease. As he started, there was little reaction from the fans, which caused him to stop the music and get the audience laughing by joking with them about the age of the song. Then, after starting again, the fans yelled and seemed to really respond. This has always been a great “Gatlin” tune and there is nothing like hearing it live. After joking again with the fans, Larry went into “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer To You.)” Every time I hear this song, it takes me back in time. The tempo is perfect and Larry’s voice, along with Steve and Rudy’s harmonies, there is no denying this should be considered one of the best songs in history. After singing a couple tunes and telling a few jokes, Larry sat on a bar stool and started telling the story about how he and his wife had moved to Nashville years ago and how he had started writing songs. Well, after buying a tiny little house outside of town, he received a call that Elvis was going to be recording his song “Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall.” This is by far a personal favorite and if you have never heard Larry sing it live, you are truly missing out. His vocal range and unique style, really brings this song to life. With the introduction “I told her, to leave me alone, that’s what she’s done” will bring chills up your spine. Folks, this is Country Music at its finest. Speaking of Country Music, Larry kept the ole beer drinking, heart breakin’ songs coming with “I Just Wish You Were Someone I Loved.” Now, this was the first time I had ever heard it live and he far surpassed any recording ever made of this tune. It is pure gold in every way. After wrapping up a couple more tunes like “Denver” and “Broken Lady,” Larry introduced a couple newer songs from their latest project “Pilgrimage.” The first song was “If I Ever See Utah Again” which included a great story about Roger Miller. Then after telling a story about a conversation he had with his son about modern Country Music, Larry explained that all artists will do things their own way, but it will never be the same. After all, “Johnny Cash Is Dead (And His House Burned Down.)” He explained this is the title to the song and off the boys went into one of the best songs of this generation. Yes, the music does sound familiar, but like Larry explains, he gives half the credit to Johnny and shares the royalties with his kids. Wrapping things up with “All The Gold In California,” the crowd went wild and everyone was singing along with every word. There is no denying the fans were eating out of Larry’s hand. He has such a stage presence, it is hard not to love him from the get go. Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers are one of Country Music’s most legendary “family” bands. If you have never seen them live, do yourself a favor and check them out. They are by far one of the best live shows ever.

Your Better Man 3:47 Moonshine 3:35 Story of our Lives 3:44 Cinderella With a new Tattoo 3:41
A beautiful acoustic guitar opens up Your Better Man. David Shelby comes in with a great bass voice to compliment it. Lyrically speaking, right off the bat, I feel it’s lacking. I mean, I got the watching you from the stage part, the blond hair and blue shirt part, but then a sharp nosedive into a Meg Ryan movie. “You had me at Hello,” come on. My suggestion is to either completely separate yourself from the person who wrote this, or to go and take creative writing classes in which you must actually cite the original writer of that line or get attacked for plagiarism. The entire song went from one cliché to another. What a shame, with the opening acoustic and his voice to have an album give such a terrible first impression for me. I can only hope it gets better.
Moonshine hopefully will reset this album for me. I like moonshine, and as a matter of fact one of my good friends had a bottle of it a few years ago. Well that’s better; actually it is a complete 180. Now, who the hell was thinking of putting that other song on first? It could’ve been forgiven after something like this. It’s got a real fast pace, almost sounding like it’s from a show. And that show I’d love to attend. I can just picture a large bonfire out in the middle of the woods with pickup trucks powering up to get there and guys holding up there jugs as they dance around the blaze.
I really hope that wasn’t a fluke, although with the title, Story of our Lives, I’m not sure. Okay, so away we go. I love the beginning. It makes you feel like you are sitting in the same room just having a jam session, or a good friend asking what you think about this song they’ve written. At points the guitar cranks into electric solos. Now, lyrically this song grabs hold of your nostalgia and wrestles at your heart and memories. Each of those ups and downs comes bubbling to the rim and spilling over as you both smile and wipe away a tear in the same few minutes.
Cinderella with a New Tattoo is such a great title. I’m really looking forward to this song. I had to just show the title to my 7 year old daughter because I thought she’d get a kick out of it too. Unlike the other songs, it opens with some strong guitar that is tough and you could imagine cranking on the way to take your girl to get a new tattoo. I’d better watch my mouth this girl sounds like trouble. Her right hook could lay me out. The song really makes me want to go take my daughters doll and put on a fake tattoo just to see her face when she finds it.
Whoever set this album up should be shot (It’s just a figure of speech. I don’t condone violence against anyone, and anyone who actually takes me seriously should get a mental health check). The first song really sent me into a zone in which I would’ve thrown this away without ever moving on. I’m glad I did and I do recommend that people take a listen to this album.

Americana Music Artist Brian Baugus Releases Highly Anticipated Debut Album
Asheville, NC - Actor, Songster and Sage, Brian Baugus took his first stage in 1969, playing in the “Coffee House” scene that was then popular. Since those days, he has been in so many acts, venues, bands, combos and such, that it has been said that “There is no gig that Baugus wonʼt play!” He has been a sideman, frontman, straight man, and doorman. He has played bass, guitar, and of course, COWBELL! He has been in duos, jambands, redneck bands (Fire Creek), comedy bands (Rich Hallʼs HeadCleaner), on TV, and in the movies. He has performed in Canada, Mexico, New England, Ohio, California, Texas, and throughout the South! In 2006, Brian's song “Circle Of Drums” was covered by legendary Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten. The track was featured on the album Moved To Stanleyville by Tom Constanten and Ken Foust. And now, much to the excitement of his fans around the globe, Brian Baugus is releasing his debut CD Actor, Songster, Sage! With musical influences such as Tony Bennett, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon and Tom Waits, which can be heard throughout his work, Brian's new Americana CD is guaranteed to thrill and amaze you! Also, Baugus hopes the CD will position him “to take over the World”, he hisses, “The Whole World!”
Says Brian, “I've been waiting in the wings for quite a while, now I am ready to wow you with some Beans Creek Boogie!”
As an actor, Baugus has played one lead, which was Broom Bromden in One Flew Over the Cuckooʼs Nest ( CPCC Theater, 1991, with director Steven Ware ). Being a part of the No Small Part school of acting, he has played many supporting roles, such as Lesgate, the would-be killer in Dial ʻMʼ For Murder, Simon Stimpson, the drunken choirmaster in Our Town, and most recently, Burnsville's Parkway Playhouse's World Premiere of Gary Carden's Outlander. Still, he is proudest of his “walk on with lines” in one of TV Guideʼs, “Top Ten Worst Ever Movies”, teaming up with musician buddies Billy Scott (Georgia Prophets) and “Ranger” Doug Scharnberg, in Don Swanʼs dreadful Gore-Met: Zombie Chef From Hell! Says Brian, “In acting, rehearsal is hard and performance is easy. In music it's vice versa.”
Mr. Baugus is currently playing live in various venues in support of his new release, Actor, Songster, Sage, which was engineered and produced by Rod Martin at his Queen Anneʼs Revenge Studio for Rodʼs Barking Moondog Records label. Brian Baugus is anxious to bring his Beans Creek Boogie to your roadhouse, festival, or pigpickinʼ, just as soon as he can!
Says producer and president of Barking Moondog Records, Rod Martin, “Listening to this 'Underground Americana' record, will push you into the existential void, and then snatch you from the edge of the abyss, and send you on a journey, where you will follow a chirping sound, to a surrealistic landscape behind a toilet, where a cricket reigns supreme! Then, on to a place where time and space collide! That signpost ahead... the Beans Creek Boogie Zone!”

LADY ANTEBELLUM CELEBRATES UPCOMING ACM PERFORMANCE WITH SPECIAL RELEASE OF “GOLDEN” FEATURING STEVIE NICKSNashville, TN – April 4, 2014 – Three-time ACM “Vocal Group of the Year” and current nominee Lady Antebellum is giving fans a preview of their upcoming performance with a special release of their song “Golden” featuring Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks, available on iTunes now.
“Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought we’d have the chance to perform with Stevie Nicks, let alone develop a friendship like we have on and off stage,” said Lady A’s Hillary Scott. “When we first sat down with her, ‘Golden’ was one of our songs that really touched her, so we recently asked her if she’d be willing to record her vocal for it - and she agreed! The timing ended up being perfect and we may have even worked up a little ACM-twist for Sunday’s performance!”
“I love Lady Antebellum, and to me, this song is their ‘Landslide’ because it’s just that spectacular,” said Nicks who wrote Fleetwood Mac’s iconic song, which first debuted on their self-titled album 1975 and has remained a legendary hit for decades.
The trio will take the stage Sunday (4/6) with Nicks for the 49th Annual ACM Awards, airing live at 7:00P CT on CBS.
