CD: RICK & HARRIETTE ANDERSEN It's All Right

RICK & HARRIETTE ANDERSEN
It's All Right

One Pair Of Hands - Just A Little Talk With Jesus - Mansion Over The Hilltop - Sunday Morning Music - Edelweiss - Jesus And Me - It's All Right - Old Rugged Cross - I See God - Precious Momories -  There Is No God, But God - I'll Fly Away Medley

To me, anyone that does Gospel Music is doing the 'right' thing.  Even the smallest bird cannot sing with the biggest of eagles, and what I mean by that is that us simple folk who still live in rural America might not be the next big Columbia Records hit recording artist.   We 'can' be among those who carry the gospel with us wherever we go, especially in our hearts, and true to the devotion we carry honoring our Lord Jesus Christ.  Rick is an excellent guitarist, and his Martin guitar is sounding extremely good in this session along side the backing tracks.  He has also become one of our finest chromatic harmonica players, as well as a singer and humorist.  Harriette is a finely honed acoustic upright bass player, vocalist and humorist.  Gospel music is readily accepted in all it's many forms by the rural folks of America.  The 'realer' the better.  We have here a good example of what Gospel Music sounds like, in person, in a little white country church like St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Neola, Iowa.  Perhaps some of the endings could have been a little smoother, but the ending is not always what is important, it's where we start, and what we say, and in this case, sing.  Rick did a nice job over-dubbing in the studio.  His harmonica blends well with his guitar, and he seems to know exactly what he's looking for when he does this.  He either puts the chords down first and leaves space for the additional instruments, or he simply plays out a rhythm track and then adds both guitar and harmonica to that in the overdub.  This CD will appear in the Germany Internet Magazine, International Country Music, so I'm sure they will all like "Edelweiss."  No liner notes on who is doing the accompanying tracks, but they are all well done  Rick & Harriette Andersen, 25142 230th St., Underwood, Ia 51516

CD: DELANEY JOHNSTON I'm Little But I'm Loud

DELANEY JOHNSTON
I'm Little But I'm Loud

Try A Little Kindness - Mockin' Bird Hill - I'm Little But I'm Loud - How Much Is That Doggie In The Window - Dialogue - Jackson - Johnny B. Goode - I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus - Rockin' Robin - How Far Is Heaven - What A Friend We Have In Jesus

Listening to a good CD is kind of like starting a book.  With the book you can usually tell by the end of the first chapter if you are going to like it or not.  Music is similar.  You can usually tell if you are going to like the artist by the end of the first song you hear.  Some in the music business give the song ten seconds.  Delaney Johnston is a little 10-year old South Dakota girl.  She had been listening to, and singing, country music for a few years.  Then one day in 2011, she had the chance to go with her grandmother to see Sherwin Linton and the Cotton Kings, the upper Midwest's most popular traditional and classic country act.  She timidly asked Sherwin if he could sing "Jackson" for her grandma.  Sherwin said 'sure,' then asked her if she could sing it.  "Sure" she said, and so it began.  Under Sherwin's tutelage she developed an enviable repertoire of songs, appearing with Sherwin and his band whenever the opportunity arose.  Now, they have gotten it all together under one tent, and what a neat CD this is.  I was right.  I liked this the minute this little girl began to sing.  By the end of the first song my eyes were already misted over.  What's more, this particular recording very adequately demonstrates how musicians react when they truly enjoy what they are doing.  Take away all the money, the trapping, the fame, the ego, and this is the result.  You'll hear Sherwin Linton and the Cotton Kings doing one incredibly gifted session backing a little girl from South Dakota with not only terrific musicianship, but with the 'love' that only comes once in awhile when the opportunity to help some one else do good, really good, comes along.  Sherwin is one shrewd and gifted guitarist as well as lead vocalist, and helping him is a group of wonderful music makers: his lovely wife Pam Linton; Norton Lawellin; Kenny Wilson; Pete Brooks; Kurt Olson; Catie Jo Patell; Deliah Johnston; and Jason Johnston.  Sherwin calls this coming together with Delaney Johnston "serendipity - good things happen by accident."  I call it the work of the Lord Jesus.  There is another song on this CD that misted me over.  The legendary Patti Page came to our festival in 2010.  Sherwin and Pam Linton were there.  One of the things Patti Page told Sheila and I when she left to go back to her home in California..."Keep it country Bob and Sheila, there isn't much of it left anymore."  And here her song is again, done by this little ten year old girl from South Dakota.  "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window"  Somehow I believe that America's incredible 'rural' music will survive.  How can it get much better.  It's also really neat to see the 'real' Sherwin Linton in the publicity photos with Delaney.  This CD will be forwarded to the Rural Roots Music Commission for their review.  If there's any other 'youngster' out there to compete with Delaney, they'd sure better show up soon.  Super hit from Black Gold Records, Box 48100, Minneapolis, MN 55448

CD: LONESOME RON - KING OF THE VALLEY YODELERS Songs of the American Cattle Trails

LONESOME RON - KING OF THE VALLEY YODELERS
Songs of the American Cattle Trails

Whoopi Ti Yi Yo - Old Chisholm Trail - I Ride An Old Paint - When The Work's All Done This Fall - Streets of Laredo - Long Side of the Santa Fe Trail - A Cowboy's Life - Colorado Trail - Chuck Wagon Joe - Red River Valley - Molly Dear Molly - Doney Gal - Lonely Line Camp - Home On The Range - I'd Like To Be In Texas For The Round Up In The Spring

Lonesome Ron is from Minnesota, his name is Ron Affolter, and he's a cowboy.  This is a remarkable collection of well known western or cowboy songs from the past, way back in the 'traditional' bag.  We've heard these songs many times done by various artists, most of them sound-alike imitators of the original versions.  Not so with Lonesome Ron.  Number one, he has a very nice 'yodel' click-on to just about every song he does.  It's just something natural he does, and certainly identifies him as a one-of-a-kind singer of old western ballads.  Number two, his voice is very real, and it sounds just like the singers of the past.  It's 'real.'  He is self-accompanied on a very nice sounding acoustic guitar with especially nice bass and bottom-string sounds.  I find this project remarkable in another way.  Ron found a way to get the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council to provide some funds for the recording through an 'Artist Grant.'  This happens a lot in the Appalachian area, but sometimes they record not-so-good artists simply because they might have a historical song they haven't heard before.  Not the case with Lonesome Ron.  He tells us what each song is about, plus he adds three songs from his own pen..."Chuckwagon Joe," (a song about a very important person on the trail ride, the cook.)  "Molly Dear Molly," (Ron wrote this song about Jeff Farris who trail rode 2,500 cattle with only ten men), and "Lonely Line Camp.' (a lonely job as the cowboy would spend months with only his horse to keep him company).  All of them right in the vein of every other 'traditional' songs he has on this CD.  Matter of fact I would be hard-put to say all three are not 'old traditional' songs they are so well written in the genre.  I shall not be surprised at all to see the Rural Roots Music Commission announcing their interest in this CD.  We're going to have a new 'Cowboy & Western' show at LeMars this year, Ron will be helped out by Dallas, Texas, cowboy Buck Helton.  Add a few cowboy poets and we'll be set.  We're going to have a new stage, a nice quiet one with the smell of small campfires and iron pot cooking, in the Tipi Village in that old Pioneer Ghost Town.  Should be a good place to get the 'Cowboy & Western' show started.  We will sure be looking forward to some good time with Ron at LeMars.  You'll hear Ron at his 'yodeling' best on 'Home on the Range"  Anyone who reads this should come share it with us.  The cover is quite well done too, in neutral browns, tans, sepia, even some light yellow, very reminiscent of the past.  Ron is located at www.LonesomeRon.com
