NEW ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Jon Pardi

NEW ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Jon Pardi

Saloon pianos clink, guitars crunch and fiddles, well, they fiddle throughout Write You a Song, Jon Pardi’s debut album on Capitol Records Nashville. And it fits together into a package that practically dares you not to get up and dance.
A lot of Pardi’s energy stems from days on the road and long nights on stages throughout his home state of California. He was already absorbing the spirit of real-world Country when he performed “Friends in Low Places” at age 7 for his father’s 30th birthday party. His first songs came at 12, his first band debuted two years later. The move to Nashville followed two restless years at Butte Junior College.
Apparently his experiences left Pardi unscarred. While there are no tears-in-my-beer blues here, that’s not to say he avoids introspective material. But even on the down-tempo “Love Hangs Around” (written by Pardi, Treat Summar and Odie Blackmon), you sense that it’s just a matter of time before the lyric’s two long-distance lovers enjoy a happy reunion.
Similarly, the rockin’ numbers have dimension. You’ll hear hardly a mention of trucks or cut-off jeans; instead, actual stories inhabit his down-home grooves. The title cut (Pardi, Bart Butler and Davy Ulbrich), as well as “Up All Night” (Pardi, Butler and Brett Beavers), showcase his fondness for melodies built on tight, repetitive motifs. The guy just sounds like he’s having a ball, and with his amiable drawl he’s inviting us all to join him.
IN HIS OWN WORDS

CMA SONGWRITERS SERIES BEGINS AT SUNDANCE ASCAP MUSIC CAFE

CMA SONGWRITERS SERIES BEGINS ITS MILESTONE TENTH YEAR WITH JANUARY SHOWS AT SUNDANCE ASCAP MUSIC CAFE SONGWRITERS SPOTLIGHT AT SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

Brandy Clark, Brett James, Chris Stapleton, and Lee Ann Womack Share the Stories Behind Their Hit Songs
NASHVILLE - The CMA Songwriters Series returns for its tenth season with the announcement that the first shows of 2014 will be at the world famous Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 22 and 23.
For a decade, the CMA Songwriters Series has been exposing fans across the country and the globe to the artisans who, through their craft, pen hits that touch the lives of millions of music fans. The January performances of the Sundance ASCAP Music Café’s CMA Songwriters Spotlight will feature special guests Brandy Clark, Brett James, Chris Stapleton, and Lee Ann Womack.
We are honored that the CMA Songwriters Spotlight will be a highlight of the Sundance ASCAP Music Café, an official part of the Sundance Film Festival calendar,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “Nashville’s songwriters are among the most talented storytellers in the world and with the Sundance Film Festival being the world’s premier stage for storytellers, I cannot think of a more appropriate setting to launch the tenth year of this series.”
In its 10-year history, the CMA Songwriter Series has presented more than 75 shows in 13 cities, including Austin, Belfast, Chicago, Dublin, London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. at the renowned Library of Congress.
The series has featured hundreds of music’s most gifted storytellers. CMA Triple Play Award winner, CMA Board member, and Songwriters Hall of Fame member Bob DiPiero has championed and hosted the series since its launch in 2005 at Joe’s Pub in New York City.
“CMA Songwriters Series has become the premier event to showcase the Nashville songwriting community,” said DiPiero. “We have reached a tipping point, in that fans are starting to understand the role of the songwriter in the success of their favorite artists. We are grateful to all of the artists that have performed on the series through the past 10 years, but it is the songwriter, the ‘invisible star,’ the storytellers and song makers that the CMA Songwriters Series celebrates. We have become musical ambassadors, spreading the hillbilly Gospel.”
Some of the artists that have been part of the series over the decade-long run include Dierks Bentley, Clint Black, Kix Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Billy Currington, Randy Houser, Jamey Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Patty Loveless, Ronnie Milsap, Kip Moore, David Lee Murphy, Gretchen Peters, Kellie Pickler, The Band Perry, Josh Turner, Carrie Underwood, Phil Vassar, and Chris Young.
Through CMA’s partnership with ASCAP, some of Country Music’s premier storytelling talent will present two feature performances as part of the official Sundance Festival calendar at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café’s CMA Songwriters Spotlight. Both shows will feature Clark, James, Stapleton, and Womack. The shows will be on Jan. 22 and 23 at 4:00 PM/MT each day at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café.
Clark epitomizes the artistry of the Country Music songwriter. Her debut record 12 Stories made a big impact on the year-end “Best Of” lists. Spin Magazine included "Take A Little Pill" on their Top 50 Songs of 2013, and also included "Follow Your Arrow," which Clark wrote with Kacey Musgraves and Shane McAnally. "Just Like Him" was featured in NPR's Favorite Song of 2013 and 12 Stories came in at No. 27 on American Songwriter's Top Albums of 2013. Rolling Stone describes it as "airtight craftsmanship, sly wit and precise detailing." She was nominated for a CMA Song of the Year Award in 2013 for Lambert's hit “Mama’s Broken Heart.”

An esteemed member of the CMA Board, James has had numerous chart successes including "When the Sun Goes Down" recorded by
Chesney and Uncle Kracker, and "Jesus Take the Wheel" recorded by Underwood, which also won a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. "It's America" recorded by Rodney Atkins, "Out Last Night" recorded by Chesney, and "Cowboy Casanova” recorded by Underwood, all co-written by James, also topped the Country charts as well as "The Truth" recorded by Jason Aldean and  "The Man I Want to Be” recorded by Young. ASCAP named James their Country songwriter of the year in 2006 and again in 2010. Other artists who have recorded his works include Kelly Clarkson, Backstreet Boys, Bon Jovi, and Paulina Rubio.
Stapleton has written four No. 1 songs including the five-week smash "Never Wanted Nothing More" recorded by Chesney, “Love's Gonna Make It Alright” recorded by Strait, and "Come Back Song" recorded by Darius Rucker. More than 150 of Stapleton's songs have appeared on albums by such artists as Adele, Bentley, Tim McGraw, and Brad Paisley, and he has several notable co-writers including Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, and Vince Gill. As a member of The SteelDrivers, Stapleton earned three Grammy Award nominations including Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for the song "Where Rainbows Never Die" and Best Bluegrass Album. He won the International Bluegrass Music Association Award for Emerging Artist of the Year in 2009, as well as six ASCAP Awards.
Womack is a six-time CMA Award winner who has sold more than five million albums and recorded numerous hits including "A Little Past Little Rock," "The Fool," "I May Hate Myself in the Morning," and "I Hope You Dance," which won CMA Song and Single of the Year Awards in 2000. Aside from being a hit singer, Womack also is an accomplished songwriter, having penned, most notably, "Good News, Bad News," a duet with fellow Texan George Strait that won the CMA Musical Event of the Year Award in 2005.
Following an auspicious launch at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café, the CMA Songwriters Series will return on Feb. 11 and 12 to Joe’s Pub in New York City, the sight of its first concerts in 2005. Additional shows in 2014 will tentatively include Austin, Chicago, Nashville, and New York with talent and show dates to be announced at a later time.

THE GUITARISTS’ GUITARIST LANDS AT THE RYMAN

THE GUITARISTS’ GUITARIST LANDS AT THE RYMAN

Brightly lit festivities came wrapped in a plethora of music as Nashville welcomed Brenda Lee - that’s “the” Brenda Lee - Amy Grant and Vince Gill, Martina McBride, Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams, Jr., the Mavericks, Steel Magnolia, and dozens of superstars celebrating great music all within days, and blocks, of each other.  The CMA and UP TV taped holiday specials, Opryland was glowing, fans visited dozens of tour buses for charity and Luke Bryan rocked the Bridgestone, but the highlight was when “Mr. Christmas” landed his “57 Chevrolet” on the Ryman Auditorium stage again this year for his tenth Christmas Rocks Extravaganza, much to the delight of the sold out audiences.

Brian Setzer has earned that title for his unwavering and unconditional love of Christmas.  With musicianship beyond belief and an equally talented orchestra in his bag of gifts, this timeless guitarist with the blonde pompadour magically took the historic stage in what seemed like a swirl of colorful and festive guitar glitter.

Like a gift to our ears, Brian took his holiday classics a step further into a visual extravaganza. With favorites such as “Jingle Bell Rock”, the Brian Setzer Orchestra was fully choreographed behind colorful individual forties‘ style music stands.  Under the maestro’s direction, eight of the very best horns to his left and five superb saxophones to his right, the scene was set.  The players were synchronized with head, hand and arm movements, standing and sitting and dancing throughout the show.  We found ourselves wishing Phil Lassiter, our fellow Nashvillian who is now music director of Prince’s horn section, was there to see it.  Excellence loves excellence.  Like icing on the music, his two back up girls filled in perfect harmonies in costumes inspired by a classic Bing Crosby film.  They completed the mood and their vocals are outstanding, along with the drummers and upright bass players who stole the show with acrobatics on their dueling basses while Brian was at home standing on the bass drum rejoicing with his signature licks about fish net stockings.

Brian told of how when he met Michael Jackson in a rush, Michael commented to him, “I like that cat song!“  Then holy cats, out came those cats as Brian rose the audience to their feet with his Stray Cats hit - the “Stray Cat Strut”, slithering into “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” as the dancing Grinch crashed the three hour holiday party on stage.  A hush fell over the Ryman as the entire audience whispered along with the famous lyrics - “I got cat class and I got cat style”.

With one hit after another, including “Jump, Jive an' Wail” and “Rock this Town, this showman does the nearly impossible as he seamlessly weaves rockabilly into big band, into Christmas, into swing and then into classical with his arrangement of the “Nutcracker“, not to mention a Johnny Cash gem as well.  “Boogie Woogie Santa Claus” is also a meaningful favorite as it was the “A” side of Patti Page’s “Tennessee Waltz”.

From his 1959 “Christmas Custom”guitar to the Setzer Hot Rod Custom "Sparkle Red", Fred Gretsch is surely proud to have Brian in his Gretsch family.  This virtuoso's tour also stopped in Allen, Texas and the family of Bill Haley of the Comets brought his Gibson guitar, which he played on “Rock Around the Clock”, for Brian to play at the show.  Historic and magical moments seem to follow this guitarists’ guitarist like stray cats all around the towns he rocks as he jumps, jives and wails, making us all want to be in his presence, especially fellow admiring musicians.

After catching candy canes tossed by Santa and brushing snow from our hair in the pews of the Ryman, Mr. Christmas took off for his next stop to spread more joy and music.  Even though money may be nice, and often necessary, we can’t help but get the impression that Brian would do it all in a rockabilly minute just for the joy.

Nashville, TN (January 13, 2014) – Last Thursday (1/9), Will Hoge performed his top-selling hit single “Strong” on CBS’ The Late Show with David Letterman. With over 165,000 copies sold to date, the song is on the verge of breaking Top 40 at Country radio and quickly garnered national attention for serving as the Chevy Silverado campaign anthem. Watch at 40:00 here. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter is also holding strong on the Americana music charts with his latest album NEVER GIVE IN (Cumberland Recordings/Thirty Tigers) launching into the Top 5. The project which features “Strong” is available everywhere now.

NEVER GIVE IN is a life motto for the Nashville native who catapulted into the national spotlight in 2012. Spending the early part of the year supporting Dierks Bentley's arena headlining tour, Hoge was introduced to his first dose of mainstream country. The release of the Eli Young Band Platinum smash “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” which he co-wrote with Eric Paslay, garnered an enormous amount of buzz at Country radio, earning Hoge nominations for the 2013 GRAMMY Country Song of the Year, 2013 ACM Song of the Year and 2012 CMA Song of the Year. While raising Hoge's profile as a hit songwriter, the song also introduced his music and records to the Country music audience; a decade removed from major label release on Atlantic Records, CAROUSEL.
