A SIGN OF TRADITION
by S. Parks
As Nashville continues to grow in leaps and bounds, to the north and south and especially up, it never forgets the value of tradition and the memories that built it. One of it’s most important pieces of history has now been permanently preserved.
When the original country music stars, including Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Minnie Pearl, Roy Acuff and all those who performed decades ago at the Ryman in the Grand Ole Opry, had a break during the show, they would cross the alley from the Ryman backstage entrance into Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. To this day, the unique two-story venue, untouched by time, welcomes local artists and major superstars daily, playing favorite songs and surrounded by hundreds of original signed 8” x 10” glossies of stars since the sixties. A musician stands outside the door on lower Broadway in the honky tonk district to invite you in. One might even catch a regular such as the amazing John Stone or even Keith Urban and Steven Tyler playing a set on the tiny stage in the famous painted window.
The alley between these two strongholds of country music has been known as Tootsie’s Alley and it is now official with the installation of the refurbished original neon sign claiming it as “Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge Alley“. The Roys, TG Sheppard, Kelly Lang, David Ball and Terri Clark were on hand for the lighting of the sign that had the same excitement as the official lighting of the city and state’s Christmas trees, which occurred only days before. Jett Williams spoke about the memories of her father, Hank Williams, visiting Tootsies and walking through the famous alley, adding his footprints to those who built this city on country music. Walking in those footprints will continue to be an honor and a tradition for country music lovers and performers for generations to come as they capture a photo underneath the bright orchid neon sign.

The Drifters – Rock

Raise and shine, here come the Drifters!
Hard to tell about any precise line-up with the legendary Rn’B band formed in 1953, as more than 60 musicians took part in it. And if the 60-year-old band still tours today with young musicians, we have to say that it sounds very different than the Drifters from the early times.
So let’s rather talk about their music and what made them sound unique, with “Rock” an ideal LP to dance Rock n’Roll all night long, as its name suggests. A digest of the Drifters’ most convincing hits and, here and there, versions by some of the Drifters’ splinter bands (Bobby Hendricks and the Flyers, Bill Pinkney), along with previously unreleased versions to please the fans.
All of what the Drifters do is filled with energy and guttural excitation (“Bip Bam”, “Drip Drop”, “Yodee Yakee”) and this means women of course, but often expressed humorously (“I Feel Good All Over”; “Sally’s Got A Sister”). Above all, what makes their songs recognizable within a wink lies in their typical Doo-Wop style interspersed with bouncy sax solos.
Their music fits very well into the 50’s and 60’s era under the influence of Caribbean music, for example if you take a song like “Hey Senorita”; another way to add sexual innuendos to their music.
Enjoy the Drifters!

Country music legend Ray Price leaving hospitalCountry Music Hall of Fame member and American country music singer Ray Price, 87, plans to leave East Texas Medical Center in Tyler today to go to his home in Mt. Pleasant for home hospice care.
Price was diagnosed in 2011 with pancreatic cancer, and despite aggressive treatment, the cancer has recently spread to his liver, intestines and now his lungs. He has been in and out of hospital care for the past few months and was recently readmitted with complications. Price and his wife of 45 years, Janie, have decided to not pursue any further aggressive treatment.
"Ray is alert and aware of his surroundings and making decisions," said Janie. "With God's blessing he has not had extreme pain. But it's with great sadness that I announce to you today that my beloved husband has entered the final stages of his cancer that he has battled for 25 months. Anyone who knows Ray is aware that he has strong convictions and great faith in God. It's his decision to leave the hospital and return home to spend his final days on his beloved ranch surrounded by the comfort of his home, family and friends."
Price wanted to give a final message to his fans. "I love my fans and have devoted my life to reaching out to them. I appreciate their support all these years and I hope I haven't let them down. I am at peace. I love Jesus. I'm going to be just fine. Don't worry about me. I'll see you again one day."
Janie thanks the fans for all of their love and messages and wanted to let the fans know the best way to send them a note is on their Facebook page or you can mail a card to:
Ray Price, P.O. Box 1986, Mt. Pleasant, TX 75456.
Price performed his last show this year in May. He has a new CD coming out and several tribute shows were already being planned to celebrate his career. One is set for Feb. 12 in Nashville.
