It’s been a good week, so let’s hope this is a good band. Like 90% of the reviews I do I have no preconceived ideas about this one. I’ve never heard of them, and I’m not in any mood to be nice unless it’s well deserved. So away we go with 18 Years. Wow, I wasn’t kidding with away we go. I feel like they’re off to the races. The electric guitar solos are nice but this song is carried by the bass and the drumbeat. The vocals are strong; I can picture a real country girl with her boots all shined up ready to kick some country boy right in his ass.
If this story is true she and a couple of friends spent 18 years in prison. She even forgot how to eat with a fork and a knife. Like I said if it’s true that might explain why she seems so strong. I gotta move on to 32nd Street. I really don’t want to move to any 32nd Street because then I’d probably have to move into a city and I’m pretty happy living near the beach in Florida.
This song also has a fast tempo. Just her voice gives you the feeling that she doesn’t take shit from anyone. It’s especially impressive where she breaks into the refrain. So far, just by these two songs I’m getting the feeling that each is a story being told. The guitar is incredible in this song. For me it’s getting difficult to get into the lyrics as my blood is pumping and my head keeps moving. Okay now I get it. She met a guy on 32nd street and took him home then fell in love.
Kill You First is a bit slower, at least for this band. The drums kind of still keep up that quick pace. They make that galloping sound that brings you out onto a prairie or some rolling free range. You Can’t Remember brings it down to an ‘ask for a dance’ tempo. This song really shows off the singer’s vocal range. It seems a sad story of neglect.
My Poor Father opens up with that guitar I was referring to earlier. That drum keeps a very slow steady rhythm. I’m really curious as to whether the singer wrote these lyrics. If so, they come straight from the heart. Even if not, this singer can sing them straight from the heart somehow.
Handmade Paper starts off with a nice acoustic. This song has a much different sound than the rest of the album that I’ve listened to. I really like this sound. This is a song you have to listen to a few times and still you may not get it. I’m going to see if I can get the lyrics for this one. “Handmade Paper will never touch my skin. It’s better to say I’m sorry.” This song’s lyrics are both poetic and symbolic. I’d love to completely understand it from the artist’s perspective. But if not, I’m still going to try to figure it out myself.
Without Cryin’ has a beautiful melody and at the time of night I’m writing this it really puts a sense of ease to my body. I already warned everyone earlier that I didn’t think this girl took shit from anyone. This song is a story about a girl (I believe it’s the singer) who if you mess with her you’ll wind up crying.
Sins has that eerie sound, lyrics, and feeling that goes with the title. Last but not least, the one I’ve been dying to hear since I saw the title. Mama Got a DUI opens up with a real rustic country sound with a steel guitar. Whoa! This one picks up out of nowhere. That must be that anger from only having one glass of wine. And, she had a high tolerance. I think that is completely unfair. It’s going to be in the paper and on the news. That happened to me once but I wasn’t drinking wine and if I remember correctly I only had a fifth of Jack. Anyway that was at least three different lives ago.
I told you I had no preconceived notions about this band and that was true. But, from now on I will. This is an album that I’d highly recommend. There are the incredible guitar riffs, a drummer who sometimes keeps it mellow and sometimes lets it rip, a bass that drives it, and both impressive vocals and lyrics. I always love songs that are stories and I just heard eleven of them. The songs were also put in a smooth flowing order for the ears and the mind; they pick you up, bring you down, make you laugh, and bring it all together. You don’t see albums like this very often.

Gretchen Wilson Joins ESPN for NASCAR Chase for Sprint Cup Coverage
Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Gretchen Wilson will be featured in ESPN's telecasts of the 10 races in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, which begins with the Sunday, Sept. 15, event at Chicagoland Speedway.
Wilson, who has appeared at numerous NASCAR races and had a connection to racing as a child, will narrate and appear in the opening teases of the telecasts of the 10 races, with each tease tailored to the racetrack hosting that week's event. In addition, her music will be featured through the entire Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup on ESPN.
"Just as NASCAR appeals to a great cross-section of American people, the same can be said for Gretchen Wilson's blend of song and attitude that has made her an icon of the music industry for the past decade," said Rich Feinberg, ESPN vice president, motorsports, production. "We look forward to showcasing her music and personality during the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup."
Wilson exploded onto the country music scene in 2004 with her smash hit "Redneck Woman" and has since scored three No. 1 albums. The critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter has won virtually every award for which she's been nominated, including trophies from the Grammys, ACM, CMA, AMA and more. CMT listed her "Redneck Woman" video at No. 11 in their Top 100 videos in 2008. Her first book, the autobiographical Redneck Woman: Stories from My Life, landed her on the prestigious New York Times Best Seller List.
Gretchen formed her own record company, Redneck Records, in 2009, and her "I'd Love To Be Your Last" single from her "I Got Your Country Right Here" CD received two Grammy nominations. She has three album releases this year, including a new country offering entitled "Right On Time" and the 13-song rock covers record "Under the Covers," both in stores now, and a Christmas CD that will be released in the fall.
"I can't tell you how excited I am to be associated with NASCAR and ESPN as we begin the Chase," said Wilson. "Many of the fans who show up at our concerts on Saturday nights are watching the races on Sundays. I'm honored to be a part of this great American tradition and look forward to seeing the fans at some races this fall."
Wilson, who has sung the national anthem at several NASCAR races, became interested in the sport as a child.
"I've been a racing fan ever since my uncle ran dirt tracks outside St. Louis when I was a kid," she said. "He would let me clean the mud out of the wheel wells with a 2x4, and I thought I was part of the pit crew. This has already been an exciting season, and I think it's about to get crazy."
Wilson's musical contributions to ESPN also will be featured online at www.espn.com/music with updates on Twitter at @espnmusic and @ESPNNASCAR. Wilson is on Twitter as @gw27.
Nine of the 10 races in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup will air on ESPN, with the race on Saturday night, Oct. 12, at Charlotte Motor Speedway airing on ABC. The season ends at Florida's Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 17.

A RESTLESS HEART CHRISTMAS
HITS SHELVES THIS FALL
Restless Heart to Release First-ever Holiday Album on October 29
Nashville, Tenn. (September 4, 2013) - This holiday season, country music powerhouse group RESTLESS HEART will deck the halls with a brand new Christmas album.
Just in time for the holidays, A RESTLESS HEART CHRISTMAS (Red River Entertainment) is set to hit retail store shelves on October 29, 2013.
Restless Heart's John Dittrich notes, "We recorded some of our favorite Christmas standards like 'O Holy Night,' 'Jingle Bell Rock,' and 'Angels We Have Heard On High.' We also included 'Silent Night' which we recorded a cappella with a 'Take 6' style arrangement."
The ten-track album, produced by Restless Heart's very own Greg Jennings, contains eight holiday classics and two previously unreleased songs.
"In addition to new arrangements of classic Christmas standards, we also included a couple of brand new songs," says Dave Innis. "'Season of Harmony' sets the tone for the album and 'Santa's Prayer,' is about the true meaning of Christmas being overshadowed by commerciality." Paul Gregg adds, "Santa's Prayer was written by some dear friends of mine, one of whom is no longer with us. From the first time I heard it, to the first time we played it live, I knew we had something very special."
A Restless Heart Christmas is the first-ever holiday album to be released in the band's illustrious 30-year career, which may be surprising to some.
"Christmas is my favorite holiday," says Larry Stewart of the upcoming release. "It's hard to believe that we didn't do this album earlier in our career. But it's pretty cool that we can release our first Christmas album on our 30th anniversary!"

SAM RIGGS & THE NIGHT PEOPLE
SCORE #1 HIT ON CMT PURE WITH NEW VIDEO “WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT”
SCORE #1 HIT ON CMT PURE WITH NEW VIDEO “WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT”
DEBUT RECORD HITS THE STREETS OCTOBER 29TH
Nashville, TN-September 4, 2013-Well in advance of their debut record release Outrun The Sun on October 29th, Sam Riggs & The Night People have exploded into the country music spotlight with a #1 hit music video on CMT Pure 12-Pack. Solely judged by fan voters, the record’s first single “When The Lights Go Out” is the kind of monster debut that launches significant careers. By the very definition of master storytelling, the video takes you on the proverbial “ride” from the second it starts and leaves you with the kind of white knuckle ending that is perpetually buzzed about between music fans. For a very lucky few the long awaited new record release will be up for grabs in a “win it before you can buy it” three tier special promotion via the band’s website and social media pages. The Viral Sweepstakes, the Instagram Sweepstakes and the Video Contest will offer fans elite merchandise packages that include free advance downloads of Outrun The Sun, autographed CD’s, autographed merchandise, free tickets to live concerts and autographed acoustic guitars wrapped in the album artwork. The contest rules and guidelines and submission dates will be posted on the band’s website and social media pages in the coming weeks so fans are urged to keep their fingers on Sam’s pulse by regularly checking in at www.SamRiggsMusic.com and www.facebook.com/SamRiggsAndTheNightPeople.
“Sam Riggs wears a legacy of honest country, makes good rock, writes lyrics that matter and straps on a stage presence second to none.” -Ray Wylie Hubbard
Receiving a hand up in this business of music from the likes of Ray Wylie Hubbard is no small accomplishment, and that mentorship – and sometimes harsh instruction – was not lost on Sam Riggs, Through the songwriting school of Hubbard, he learned the time-honored virtue of patience and the aptitude for turning the rough and tumble falls to the ground into a steady, recovered gait. “He opened my eyes to songwriting, and I could see the idiot I had been and the idiot I was going to be, and he helped me to navigate that. He taught me what it really is to be a songwriter.” Following the release of the 2012 EP, Lighthouse, Outrun The Sun on Nashville-based Vision Entertainment is a perfectly ripened delicacy produced by Erik Herbst (Eli Young Band, Bowling For Soup, Josh Abbott Band) and signals a lyrical comprehension that reaches far beyond Sam’s years, and musical compositions that are both brave and progressive. The record is fully backed by a live show that comes out swinging and keeps the energy high.
Having opened for acts that include Chris Knight; Joe Diffie; Kevin Fowler; Pat Green; the Eli Young Band; the Randy Rogers Band; and, of course, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Sam Riggs & The Night People have become well-educated in the art of working a crowd. Riggs himself never fails to dazzle with his “musical chair” performances that never restrict him to one location on the stage. The band recently returned from Country Rendez-Vous, the longest running French country music festival in Crappone, France where the guys gave a dynamic performance to a crowd of 8,000 fans and had one of the longest autograph lines of any artist that performed at the event lasting over an hour.
Sam Riggs & The Night People is very honored to be a part of the Feed Your Soul auction benefitting the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank. All proceeds go directly to the organization so please visit the auction Facebook page at Feed Your Soul Auction to place bids on unique keepsakes from artist that include Uncle Lucius, Pat Green, Randy Rogers, Charlie Robison, Wade Bowen, Cody Canada & The Departed, Stoney LaRue and many more. The auction will rotate every ten days with new items up for bid. You can also text “FOOD” to 32333 to make a donation.
