CD: Doo-Wop - Volume 14 1962

Doo-Wop
Volume 14 1962

Another Doo-Wop, another day, and another year, I have a question. How could anyone have let this go on for so long?  Remember Then, I wish that they would forget about it. Why play albums when you can drive your electric wheelchairs through a drive-thru to pick up some coffee? I guess maybe I’m biased by the same old titles and the same old themes. What Time Is It, I have an answer to that song title before I even listen to it. It’s time to realize you have dementia and the ‘good old days’ were probably not all that good. Now, I’ve listened to it and I’m sure they weren’t that good.
Do You Love Me, All these questions, they must have been confused back then a lot. Wait a minute, I think everyone has heard this one. Okay, this one’s not so bad.  What’s next, Soldier Boy, I was trying to figure out why this had that title but it finally came up at the end. I Love You, I have no idea how this song could be popular in any decade. A Wonderful Dream at least has a bit of a faster tempo. I could envision this song being played for Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
Another prepubescent boy begins, I Love You, didn’t these groups ever think of singing a duet with a girl. And why would anybody enjoy someone singing in such a high pitched voice. Forever, at least this woman sings about loyalty. Whatever happened to that word in this day and age. Although it may be a bit scary if you really don’t want this girl. It reminds me of a girl who used to pop out of nowhere and take pictures of me in high school. She never said anything but I always wondered what she did with those pictures.
A few songs here and there I knew pretty well; hell who wouldn’t know Twist and Shout for instance. Anyway, I’ll say the same as I said about the others. The quality, the fact that the songs are digitally remastered, and maybe if you grew up during that time you’d want it I do not.

CD: SAMANTHA COOK - Harvesting Happy Endings

SAMANTHA COOK
Harvesting Happy Endings
Torn - Dying Bones - Winter Wind - Lily - Further Faster - The End - Dirty Window - Song Of Solitude - Next To You - Here We Are

Samantha Cook is probably best know in upper Midwest circles as the daughter of super guitar picker and singer, Tiny Cook.  Tiny was on the Ozark Jubilee and was without a doubt one of the best country performers we had in our part of the USA.  He's gone now, but his daughter Sammy is carrying on.  This however is not a 'country' CD.  It's not really a 'folk' album either, though there is some exceptionally good drum sounds.  I'm kind of over the hill when it comes to describing this part of the music, but I'm going to assume this is a djembe?  The bass, and sometimes the rhythm guitar, is a little too loud in the mix for me to hear all the words properly, but what I do understand is incredibly good.  Not sure where this was recorded, it's a Magick K Production, and Matt Rouch and Kiley Bodenhamer are named as co-conspirators in the recording and mixing. Rhythm guitar is super but pretty loud in the final mix, lots of neat chords I've never heard before make up for that.  The bottom line is Sammy Cook.  Her voice is somewhat different than I remember it when she was performing at the Walnut Opera House a few years ago, and her songs are now very temperamental, sincere, and personal. However there is another very interesting facet to this work.  Tommy "K" Kriegshauser also contributes some very interesting original songs.  He's also an outstanding vocalist.  In total, Samantha wrote five and Tommy wrote five with a little help on "Dirty Window' from Kevin Hiddleston.  This is one of the most interesting songs of the set, with some neat harmony and harmonics interwoven between the guitar licks.  Yes I like this one., however I don't have a descriptive 'box' I can put this delightful album in.  If I take it to the Rural Roots Music Commission they might, I think maybe they might, label it 'contemporary acoustic folk.' A totally new experience for me, and I enjoyed it.  I keep hearing a little Michael Nesmith, especially in some of the openings.  I don't know, have any idea who Michael Nesmith is?  Keep up the good work young folks, music is the salve of humanity, no matter what part of it you are inhabiting.

CD: THIS SIDE OF SUNDAY - Right Here Right Now

THIS SIDE OF SUNDAY
Right Here Right Now
Farm Song - Great God - Thought I Knew You Well - Right Here Right Now - God Must Be A Cowboy At Heart - I Can't Help Myself - Love Has A Name - Who Is Like Our God

This is one of the most remarkable modern Gospel groups in the upper Midwest.  In just a short time they have been able to take their music coast to coast, especially to California where they have been doing incredible concerts.  There's quite a few combinations that make this group work so well.  One is the very well written Gospel songs they record.  Rich Riche and Keith Wilson are responsible for the incredibly good original songs they record.  They ventured a little out of the ordinary this time and did a song by Dan Seals "God Must Be A Cowboy At Heart," which is truly a number one piece of work all the way through.  All of the 'voices' we hear from this group are top notch, the best.  It's the same with their instruments, their harmonies, their commitment, and of course their very strong belief in Jesus Christ.  That's what is most important to me.  These guys are macho muscular he-man kind of guys.  To be so sensitive to what they are producing with their music, to me is a 'gift' from God.  That's why they are so believable, so entertaining, so easy to listen to.  Everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING on this CD that you hear is top-notch, better than most anything we hear on radio these days....ANYWHERE!  They are all close friends, and they function well together.  Brian Owens with super vocals and guitar; Chad Riche with super vocals and bass; Rich Riche with super vocals and guitar and mandolin; Keith Wilson with super vocals guitar, banjo, violin (especially nice on "I Can't Help Myself" and "Who Is Like Our God"), mandolin, dobro, and Chad Lee on drums and percussion who also produced and engineered this project. What a treat to hear a group basically from Council Bluffs, Iowa, doing music so incredibly professionally well done.   Off this one goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission. They are going to have one good time listening to these Midwest guys that have taken their music far far above the hills of Iowa.

Bem,vamos ao árduo trabalho de rever um CD de Kenny Rogers.
Em This woman ,o estilo musical é um pouco diferente do habitual de Kenny, porém funcionou como um teste e ele foi muito bem!!!
You and I é um hino para nós!
Em Living with you ,nada a acrescentar ,música muito boa....ouçam!!!
Eyes that see in the dark,música título do CD,muito bem feita, suave e excelente para se ouvir com muita atenção!

REDNECK CRAZY IN TIMES SQUARE

TYLER FARR GETS “REDNECK CRAZY” IN TIMES SQUARE

Columbia Nashville Artist Confirms Album Title And Reveals “Redneck Crazy” Album Cover Timed To Ram Country on Yahoo! Music Performance
Columbia Nashville artist Tyler Farr recently took to New York City to do something he’s never done before; take over Times Square. As part of his debut Ram Country on Yahoo! Music performance (http://music.yahoo.com), Tyler hit the Big Apple and brought his Top 20 hit single “Redneck Crazy” to one of the craziest cities in America. Along the famed city’s backdrop, Tyler brought the song to life from the top of the Empire Hotel before taking to the streets of Manhattan to indulge in some of NYC’s finest day-to-day activities. Following his performance, Tyler headed to the heart of the city to watch a surprise unveiling of his debut album cover unfold before his eyes across the Sony plasma big screen, right in the middle of Times Square.
Of the “Redneck Crazy” album cover reveal, Tyler said “I know I’ve said in the past that I wanted to make an album that you could take anywhere, but to see myself on a huge billboard in Times Square, especially with the album cover reveal, is beyond crazy, it’s just surreal.”
Even before its official impact and success at country radio, the single “Redneck Crazy” received critical acclaim, with MusicRow’s Robert K. Oermann declaring, “Tyler Farr grabbed ahold of my ears and didn’t let go for a second…. It’s a gripping little record,” and All Access cheered, “Farr romps through ‘Redneck Crazy,’ with passion and soul, clearly swinging for the fences–and he connects. Simply put, this feels like a smash.” The fast-moving single also caught the attention of The New York Times, and was recently featured in the publication’s Playlist column as “Naughty Revenge, Just Plain Naughty and Not Plain at All.”
Currently still climbing the Mediabase Country (#17) and Billboard Country charts at (#16), Tyler’s video for “Redneck Crazy,” which features special guests Lee Brice, Colt Ford, and Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson, also continues to gain traction in the video world, with over 2 million views for the song’s video on VEVO and counting. Tyler’s fan base also continues to grow, with Facebook users growing more than 600 percent in the last three months alone. Fans can keep up with Tyler by visiting his web site at www.TylerFarr.com or by following him on Twitter @tylerfarr.      LeMars, Iowa....."The Rural Roots Music Commission was established in Iowa in the early 90's," according to Bob Everhart who sits on the Board.  "In the beginning we just gathered together like-minded music lovers to listen to, cuss, and discuss, what we liked or didn't like about new country music record releases.  We soon discovered that today's modern country music genre leaves a lot to be desired among fans of more traditional or classic country music.  We also learned rather rapidly that the artists who did an older form of country music were nowhere to be found in today's top-40 radio charts.  That led us to having more meetings and more listenings of local, statewide, and regional recordings, and much to our surprise we found there were a lot of artists recording not only superlative country music, but also folk, bluegrass, alternative, Americana, all kinds of incredibly good American music, but recognition for their work and talent was pretty dismal, especially coming from the so-called commercial country music world.  That led us to an investigatory experience finding, listening to, and eventually awarding merit and honor to those who excel in what they do 'outside' the commercial arena.  What we eventually discovered was what we might consider a goldmine of incredibly pleasurable and creative music .  The Rural Roots Music Commission now honors national and international artists as well, and the awards for "CD of the Year" are given annually at the National Traditional Country Music Association's festival of rural music, in LeMars, Iowa, Aug. 26-Sept. 1, this year.  This event is in its 38th year and now has ten stages going from 9am to midnight every day for seven days.  Over 650 musical participants come to this huge convention of old-time country, folk, bluegrass, and a zillion other beautiful genres of music that have nothing to do with today's so-called country music.  It should also be noted that the Rural Roots Music Commission does not try to stuff an artist in a pre-conceived genre box, rather they make the box fit the artist."
Michael Thoma of Waterloo, Iowa, will be awarded the Rural Roots Music Commission's 2013 "Old Time Country Music CD Of The Year."  The CD, entitled "Comin' Home" was recorded at the Catamount Studios in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and carries a message of hope, redemption, memory, and rural lifestyle.  According to Bob Everhart who reviews CD's for Tradition Magazine and Country Music International, a German Internet magazine, "Mike Thoma sets pen to paper and writes the poetic belief he reveals to his own mind about his own experiences....I'm especially impressed with the writing, but this wouldn't be possible either, without the spirit and imagination of the vocalist, one and the same."  Thoma will receive his CD of the Year award during the festival in LeMars, Aug 26-Sept 1. Thoma, a Waterloo resident and Iowa native for 56 years, has been involved in music since the age of 21.  Once leader of the very popular local band Blackwell Vintage, Mike eventually moved on to pursue music as a solo artist.  After compiling a lengthy catalog of Midwestern roots music, he put his music career on hold to raise his five children with Kate, his wife of 35 years.  Mike continues to write new compositions and nurtured his love of music, passing much of his passion on to his children.  Mikes lyrics and carefully crafted melodies are inspired by his upbringing on a farm in rural Iowa, and the travels and wisdom that can only come with age.  Michael Thoma's music is not just a reflection of the Midwestern experience, but an insight into the human experience that we all share.
Thoma will join a number of celebrities at this year's event, most of whom will be entering America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame at LeMars.  On hand for this year's honors are: Joanne Cash (Johnny Cash's younger sister); Dr. Harry Yates (Founder of Cowboy Church and the husband of Joanne Cash); Ed Bruce (songwriter and recording artist, he wrote "Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys"); Terry Smith (composer of "Far Side Banks of Jordan" for Johnny & June Carter Cash): LuLu Roman (a star from the popular television show HeeHaw who now sings gospel music); Kenny Seratt (holds the incredible title of showing Merle Haggard how to sing like Merle Haggard); and Mickey Gilley (arguably America's most famous honky-tonk piano player).  Add to this over 650 performers of acoustic music and you have a melting pot of incredible music.  According to Everhart, "We have a lot of activities going on ten stages.  One stage, the air conditioned one is our main stage where the awards are given.  Adjoining it is the Dance Hall where we have evening dances as well as day-time shows.  Next to it is the workshop building, which also hosts jams and contests.  We have one building devoted to just the musical instrument called the Dobro, and next to it the Pioneer Building which is another show-house of older music.  Outdoors we have the Gospel Stage, the One on the Mountain Stage, the Tipi Village Stage, and the Log Cabin Front Porch Stage.  We also have about three distinct areas where 'jamming' takes place.  All in all it's a tremendous musical experience."
The festival is actually a fund-raiser for NTCMA properties.  The Pioneer Music Museum is located in Anita, Iowa, and contains over 3,000 artifacts relative to the music they are saving.  Everhart says, "We are actually an endangered species.  Music changes so rapidly at the commercial level, it's difficult to keep all of America's past musical genres alive and well, but our museum does a pretty good job of that."  Also in Anita, is the Oak Tree Performance Center, where Everhart and his wife Sheila stage old-time music shows and concerts.  Recording artists themselves, for the Smithsonian Institution, they have created a safe haven for Iowa's rural music, if not America's.

SARAH DAVISON, TAKES 'YOUNG GOSPEL CD OF THE YEAR'

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, ARTIST, SARAH DAVISON, TAKES 'YOUNG GOSPEL CD OF THE YEAR'

Sarah Davison of Nashville, Tennesse, has just been notified that she is the recipient of the Rural Roots Music Commission's "Young Gospel CD Of The Year."  Sarah is the mover and shaker behind her band 'Highroad' and originally lived in Braddyville, Iowa.  According to Bob Everhart who reviewed Sarah's CD "The Road Less Traveled," "Sarah Davison is one of the most creative artists I have had the privilege to ever experience.  Her keyboard work is phenomenal and her vocals and songwriting abilities are also phenomenal.  She works closely with Anna Grace Kimbrough who plays fiddle in Highroad.  This particular CD opens with an old-time Irish fiddle tune that rapidly shifts to a full backing sound that is the epitome of the great music work done in Nashville.  Blake Bollinger is the producer of this fine work of art, and the shining example of Sarah's ability to pierce the listeners mind with new sounds, new ideas, new arrangements.  And, being a very 'traditional' country music preservationist, I'm happy to say I can hear Sarah's up-bringing in much of what she does, though I'm sure labelists would call her music drifting toward other descriptions. This CD will be especially appealing to a young audience who likes beauty in musical work as well as moods, feelings, differences, and in this case, lots of spirit.  Sarah draws on all of the musical influences she has captured over the years, but Christian belief, support, inspiration, and certainly 'giving' is present in all that she does. If you are young, and you wonder what all the 'talk' about Jesus is about, you'll definitely find some answers here."
