Interview with Hoyt Hughes

Interview with Hoyt Hughes

Lamitschka:  How was the last year for you? What were your highlights?

Hoyt Hughes:  The last year has been great! I signed with Blue Bolt Records and I have a wonderful team supporting me with the label, a producer, radio promotions, and a publicist. The highlight is that the single is climbing the charts and it's really a great song.

Lamitschka:  What is your latest CD and how's it doing?

Hoyt Hughes:  The single,“Happy Ending,“ is out on serveral radio stations across the country and we are getting more stations everyday. The Billboard Indicator chart has it at #56 and it’s #60 on the Music Row Country Breakout chart this week. (May 23, 2013)

Lamitschka:  Your current single is being played by radio. What do you feel is special about this song that makes people want to hear it?

Hoyt Hughes:  This single has a fresh sound, an upbeat tempo and an awesome story that is solid!!

Lamitschka:  How much creative control do you have over your music?

Hoyt Hughes:  For the first time I have a say in every move we make and this is a great feeling to have! They work with me on song choices and encourage me to start writing again. I’m asked to be myself as an artist. As an artist this is very rare to have and I am very thankful.

Lamitschka:  Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?

Hoyt Hughes:  Well, these roots run deep and wide, seems all of my family has music in their souls and, as far back as I can remember, I was dancing, singing, playing the drums, spoons or guitar either on a stage or a front porch. It didn't matter to me as long as I was playing!

Lamitschka:  What do you think about today's music industry?

Hoyt Hughes:  I think it's awesome. There is a ton of talent out there and people are getting exposure to such a variety today. It’s also so much easier to find new music now with social networking.

Lamitschka:  As an artist, you so many tasks such as recording, touring, interviews. What do you like best, what's your favorite activity?

Hoyt Hughes:  I love it all!! It's so great to meet new people and take on new challenges and new songs.

Lamitschka:  What drives you?

Hoyt Hughes:  That next great song and that next show drive me most of all! I love the feeling you get when everything falls into place. The fans and are amazing! And, I appreciate the chance to make someone smile and then getting that opportunity to do it all over again at the next show.

Lamitschka:  What's unique about you that will differentiate you from other artists?

Hoyt Hughes:  Well, I definetly have a different name! Lol And, I sound like myself, not really anybody else, so that also helps.

Lamitschka:  Many music fans today get their information about artists online. Do you have your own website and what will fans find there?

Hoyt Hughes:  I do have a website and it is being updated with new information all the time I also have

Lamitschka:  Tell us about the fan club and how people can join it.

Hoyt Hughes:  The fan club will be up on the website with all the information. I believe it is under construction now.

Lamitschka:  What message would you like to send your European fans?

Hoyt Hughes:  Hello everyone!! I hope you enjoy our music and can't wait to do a show for you, a meet and greet...give me a shout out!!

In a musical age that has very nearly forgotten what 'olde-tyme' music is, every once in awhile a remarkable group that still plays the old songs pops up.  We still have the old 78rpm records, and even some LP's that keep a memory alive of what this music was all about, but rarely do we get to hear it 'live' which is what Gordon's Old Tyme Music Band is all about.  This gifted Canadian group has been playing it a long time, and they have stayed true to it's roots and origins. Well just about.  The old upright piano has given way to a lap electronic keyboard, but be that as it may, it still sounds pretty close to the original.  With Sadie Tiffin tickling the keys, it makes for the bed rock of this interesting group  Mary Hehn is on the guitar, Alex Robertson tries his hand at the banjo (very old-timey), David Wall is on the bass, and Gordon Wall is on the violin.  These Canadians prefer to call it the violin, not the fiddle.  Bottom line, this is a group that provides dance music for those in Ontario that still 'remember' how to jig, or how to do a reel, or even a Quadrille.  Plus all that great 'dancing' music, this wonderful olde tyme group has managed to find a few pure nuggets of old songs that without this recording might not ever be heard again.  "Little Burnt Potato" is an example, so perhaps might  be the "Farmer's Jamboree."  We've had lots of Canadian performers and groups come to our festival in LeMars, Iowa, and I'm passing this CD along to the Rural Roots Music Commission.  They will certainly take out their pens and pencils to mark this one definitely for 'olde tyme,' for that is exactly what it is.

CD: CLIFFY SHORT - Just Plain Old Country

Just Plain Old Country
All Of A Sudden - The Next Voice You Hear - Poor Man's Riches - More And More - You Only Want Me When You're Lonely - Walkin' The Dog - Long Lonely Day - Shackles and Chains - I Hope Tomorrow Never Comes - When Someone You Love Doesn't Love You - Ray's Roadhouse Tavern - Conscience Keeper Of My Heart - Sedona Arizona
As a long time record reviewer, home-stated in Iowa, and listening to a great deal of traditional and classic country music, it is a constant surprise to me to hear that very music coming out of well done.  This 'so well done' goes to a terrific classic country singer, Cliffy Short who makes his home in Ontario.  This particular project was done in memory of his lovely wife Norma, and what a project it is.  Recorded at Owen Sound and engineered by Todd Nolan, this is a super good recording of 'real' country music.  Mel Aucoin on piano and bass; Todd Nolan on drums and back up vocals; Bob Lucifer on the very necessary and very good steel guitar and Dobro; J. K. Gulley on lead guitar, mandolin and rhythm guitar; and Tyler & Linsey Beckett on fiddles. Christie Aucoin helps on back up vocals.  Wow, what a neat line-up.  This is classic country (with a little western swing and Cajun thrown in for dancing), with a just right voice to put it over.  It's kind of like stepping back in time to listen to country music when country music was country music.  This is so different from today's 'failed imitation' of country music.  It's all here, and even though we received this CD from Newfoundland promoter Michael T. Wall a little late, we are still pushing it ahead to the Rural Roots Music Commission for "Traditional Classic Country Music CD of the Year."  Cliffy Stone has stayed 'true' to what country music is all about, and his 'roots' are definitely where he came from, and so painfully missing in today's 'so-called' country music we hear on radio now.  This is the best 'country' I've heard this year.
