THE JOHNSON STRINGS Silhouette - It Is Not I That Live

Silhouette - It Is Not I That Live
La Rejouissance - Beaumont Rag - Written In Red - Dwelling In Beulah Land - There's A Peace In My Heart - The Merry Widow Waltz - We Believe - Power In The Blood - Lookin' For A City - The Old Rugged Cross - Mansion Over The Hilltop - Psalm 67 - Rock Of Ages - Gypsy Waltz - The Hallelujah Side - Fantomen - Near to The Heart Of God - This World Is Not My Home - Holy Holy Holy
This remarkable family is a wondrous musical group.  Violins, violas, upright bass, and keyboard is the majority, but expect the most remarkable sounds coming from these instruments, and much more.  "Beaumont Rag" to "Rock of Ages" is a transportation of the most remarkable kind.  Six children, a mom and a dad, make up the 'strings.'  I'm glad I had the chance to review this album when I did, because the Johnson Strings are going to make a very delightful appearance at the Oak Tree Opry in Anita, Iowa, on September 20th.  I'm also forwarding this CD to the Rural Roots Music Commission for 'instrumentalist' attention.  The entire project, and there are 19 great songs on this one, really allows the 'strings' to prevail and shine. They went to the Catamount Studios for the recording, and I have to admit this particular studio is producing some incredibly good music.  In the overall production, it's hard for me to find any negatives with a fine group like this.  I've listened to 'Beaumont Rag' played by old-time fiddlers so much, the Johnson's version seemed too slow to me.  Then I listened to it three or four more times, and the more I listened the more I liked it.  As a slower song it becomes quite beautiful.  The vocals throughout, harmony included are all wonderful presentations of a 'family' singing together, and there just isn't anyway this 'tightness' can be duplicated by the imitators.  "Old Rugged Cross" has an almost operatic approach, it is sad, deep, very classically adapted, for me it's a wonderful expression of originality.  "Gypsy Waltz" is another example of really good 'personality added' arrangement. "Fantomen" is also like this, a very beautiful 'Swedish' influence. If you've never heard the Johnson Strings, you should.  Their music is totally their own, and professionally and classically done, whether it's the Orange Blossom Special and the Beaumont Rag.....and to be sure, The Old Rugged Cross and The World Is Not My Home.

BOBBY G. RICE - Down In Texas

Down In Texas
This is one of those one-song releases, directed almost entirely toward disc jockeys around the world.  This remarkable 'new' marketing technique is a development of Alan Karls' work with Century II Records.  For me it's the beginning of a 'new' way to get classic and traditional country music back.  You might remember Bobby Rice's big hit (some time ago) "You Lay So Easy On My Mind" which launched his country music career.  We inducted him into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame while we were still in Missouri Valley. Here he is again, with a song written by Iowa's own Robbie Wittkowski, Little Jimmy Dickens, and Bobby as well.  This new 'system' is how 'new' thinking is getting this music played.  This is a super song, well written and well played.  Western-Swing and a little honky-tonk for flavor makes it an instant 'listen-to' because it's fun, it's good, it mentions Austin, and it's marketable.  Something is happening with musicians too, Bobby Flores is playing fiddle (didn't we just see him at Wahoo), and Jim Loessberg is producer and engineer, all the way around absolutely terrific.  More more more more!

Take This Hammer - Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine - Chicken Reel - 500 Miles Away From Home - Scotland - Wouldn't Change You If I Could - Angaline The Baker - Some Old Day - Faded Love - Little Maggie - Maiden's Prayer - I Still Miss Someone - Budded Roses - I Am Weary Let Me Rest - Midnight On The Water
Bobby Atkins might very well have been Bill Monroe's 'best' traditional banjo player.  Here he is with a brand new 'traditional' bluegrass-country album.  Recorded at the D&K Studios in Madison, North Carolina, this is the epitome of what 'traditional' bluegrass should sound like.  Beautiful Katie Griffin is first the master of vocal harmony, and though her fiddle doesn't quite have the personality it needs, it's not far from it.  Dicky Minor is on guitar and bass, with Ty Bullins on lead guitar. For me it's a step back in time to hear what the music sounded like when it was young.  Bobby Atkins is not only a super-great banjo player, he is also a helping hand.  I loved this CD.  I believe Katie's best is "Scotland" and "Faded Love." Imagine that, some Bob Wills on an old-time bluegrass album.  And Bobby Atkins. He never fails to deliver, but I especially liked him on "I Still Miss Someone" both vocally and banjo.  This CD is dedicated in loving memory of Amy Randall Dix, certainly an appropriate song for that memorial.  Good going to Bobby and Katie for bringing the very  best of the past alive for me, and for anyone that listens to this fine CD. We don't get 'traditional' bluegrass so much anymore, off this one goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission.

Half asleep, eyes straining to stay open and somewhat delirious, my fingers hit the keyboard at about the exact same time the album began to play. Having recently finished a few female artist reviews I almost wrote the name ‘Tracy’ as he began to sing. I’m sure glad I didn’t, because if Trace Adkins found out I know he’d kick my ass.
But seriously, who wouldn’t recognize those distinct baritone vocals? The four time Grammy nominee, the winner of five ACM and CMT awards, the philanthropist, the author, the TV personality, and above all the man who deeply cares for his family. This is Trace Adkins 11th album. It’s being released by Show Dog- Universal Music and the production is exactly what you’d expect, if not more, from such a well respected organization.
Due to my reviewing schedule, I’ve an equalizer on this computer that’s top notch. I suggest you download one too. Then, fix your settings so you can listen to it live in bed like I have. Let me run through some songs off the album:
When I Stop Loving You is a truck-stop proposition that takes the two on a north- south-east-west long distance run. This song is going to have a lot of guys getting down on one knee and pressing play.
So What If I Do adds a sentimental, almost personal, sense of depth to this album with a saxophone leering through the twisting alleyways of his voice as it snakes through this ballad.
Come See Me takes it to a very romantic level. Forget putting on Marvin Gaye when you’re trying to snuggle-up after a night out, this song will help you get it on.
Kiss You All Over displays the range that Trace Adkins possesses. His vocals seem to walk into the clouds then slowly descend to ease into the ending. You see this on If the Sun Comes up. The latter songs imagery paints the scene of both.
Watch the World End (Featuring Colbie Caillat )         is a ‘what if song’ that is intensely thought provoking. The song puts all things in perspective on this journey of life. It is a humbling song for anyone who believes the things they accumulate are the most important for them.
Love Will…is the song that puts the overall message of the album to the listener. I don’t think I should give away too much. I believe the album will mean different things to every different listener. Personally I believe, When I Stop Loving You, will become that ‘on the road childhood memory song’. For me, there was Kenny Rogers “The Gambler” as well as John Denvers “Country Roads.” Those are the songs that I grew up with that travel with me when I go.
I suggest that you should buy this album, wait in line if you have to. It’s worth it. After that, put it on, play it, suggest it to someone else, give it as a gift. You’ll be happy you did, and everyone else you come in contact with will be as well.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Wed., May 1, 2013) – The self-titled debut album from FOX’s The X Factor Season 2 winner and Syco Music/RCA Nashville recording artist Tate Stevens has debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart this week. The album, produced by Blake Chancey, features his current single, “Power Of A Love Song.” Stevens co-wrote three songs on the album, which also features such acclaimed songwriters as Carson Chamberlain, Dallas Davidson, Drew Davis, Joe Diffie, Ashley Gorley, Ben Hayslip, Wade Kirby, Shane Minor, David Lee Murphy, and Rivers Rutherford, among others.
“I am so proud of this album and so excited that music fans have chosen to spend their hard-earned money to buy it,” said Stevens. “It has been my life-long goal to record an album that people would enjoy, and to see it debut at No. 4 is truly a dream come true. I am a blessed man and so thankful for all my fans.”
GAC’s Daryl Addison raves, “Tate demonstrates an impressive feel for building tightly-woven and fluid melodies… Tate packs a lot into each vocal performance, the result of which is an album full of introductions to his everyman personality.”
Music critic Chuck Dauphin writes, “what really sets Stevens apart is his way with a ballad. Whether it be on the stunning ‘Ordinary Angels’ or on his current single ‘Power of a Love Song,’” he demonstrates a depth that brings to mind artists such as one of his biggest influences, Garth Brooks. Tate Stevens shows on his debut album that he’s got the talent to be a long-term voice in this business.”
The Hollywood Reporter stated that Stevens “makes a country debut, that….shows he may have what it takes to hang in Nashville.”
Stevens is sure to celebrate his album’s debut tonight (May 1) when he performs at Renegades in West Palm Beach, Fla., and tomorrow (May 2) when he performs at Joyland in Bradenton, Fla. For additional tour dates, visit Follow him on Twitter at @tatestevensctry.

Bobby Cyrus Homeplace

Country Artist Bobby Cyrus To Release Debut Album, Homeplace, May 21
“Send Me Wings” To Be Released To Country Radio In Coming Weeks
(Nashville, Tenn. – May 1, 2013) BGC Records/GMV Nashville artist Bobby Cyrus will release his debut album, Homeplace, on May 21 through all major digital retailers, including iTunes and Amazon.
The album features 13 tracks, nine of which were written or co-written by the singer. Produced by renowned vocalist and Bluegrass musician, Don Rigsby, the album features special guest appearances by, Bobby’s cousin, Billy Ray Cyrus on “Milkman’s Eyes,” and Country legend, Tom T. Hall on the track “A Rose For Marie.”
"Since the day I picked up my first guitar this is the music I have always wanted to create,” explained Cyrus. “I thank God for giving me the gift of rhythm and rhyme and a special thank you to all those who believed in me enough to help make this dream come true. I am truly a blessed man."
The title of the release borrows its namesake from the Cyrus family abode in rural Kentucky. A well-loved dwelling and place of tenderness and growth for generations of Cyrus’.  The home’s symbolism serves as ongoing inspiration to Cyrus and as a motif for the album.
The final track of the record is a humble, warm-hearted poem. Written by Bobby’s father, Bob Cyrus, the story centers around the family life on their home in Louisa, KY. Until his passing, Bobby’s father performed the poem at the family’s annual get together, a duty that has been bestowed upon Bobby. Additionally, its familial sincerity serves as the essence behind the title track and a theme throughout the album.
In February, Cyrus became the official spokesperson of the National Walking Horse Association (NWHA). The singer will team up with the association, performing at select events across the country as part of his 2013 “NWHA Tour” and expressing his support for the associations cause. Founded in 1998, The National Walking Horse Association, located at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, is a group of dedicated horse owners and enthusiasts committed to preserving and promoting the naturally-gaited walking horse and its welfare.  Cyrus is scheduled to appear at a series of public NWHA events in the coming months, meeting fans, signing merchandise and advocating his passion for walking horses.
A former heavy-machinery sales and management executive in the coal mining and construction industry of eastern Kentucky, Bobby Cyrus grew up immersed in the sounds of bluegrass and traditional Country music.  Cyrus credits artists like Waylon Jennings, Ricky Skaggs, Larry Cordle, Kris Kristofferson, Keith Whitley and Tom T. Hall as some of the key influences that helped define his songwriting and musical style.  Cyrus released “Milkman’s Eyes” (featuring his cousin Billy Ray Cyrus) in Nov. 2012.
The video for “Milkman’s Eyes,” which premiered on GAC’s Daily Countdown, is currently in rotation on The Country Network and is also featured on

TWO LANES OF FREEDOM 2013 TOUR Kicks Off In Birmingham May 2
Nashville, TN- May 1, 2013- Country superstar Tim McGraw is continuing his HomeFront program by awarding mortgage-free homes to military veterans and their families.  Last year, McGraw teamed up with Chase and Operation Homefront to launch the program which has awarded over 30 newly renovated mortgage-free homes provided by Chase to deserving military families so far.  This summer, McGraw, Chase and Operation Homefront will double that number by awarding a home at each of his 31 tour stops.  McGraw has a long history and deep interest in supporting veterans and military families and wanted to find another way to honor our veterans and give back to them for their commitment and service to our country.
“Launching our HomeFront program made last summer so much more special than I could have originally imagined.  I can honestly say that I got as much – or more – out of the experience than the veterans who received the new homes and assistance," said McGraw.  "These families made an incredible mark on me, and I'm more grateful than I've ever been for the sacrifices they make every day to serve our country.   I'm just honored to be a part of this program, and I look forward to working with Chase and Operation Homefront to take it even further this summer."
McGraw's continued partnership with Chase is part of a larger initiative to help raise awareness about the issues facing veterans and their families including employment, homeownership and education.  With one million servicemembers projected to transition out of the military by 2016, the HomeFront program helps returning veterans successfully transition back to civilian life and build a solid foundation for the future.
McGraw's TWO LANES OF FREEDOM 2013 TOUR, presented by Pennzoil, will crank up this summer in Birmingham, AL on May 2 and continue on to 30 cities through July.   The U.S. trek, will also feature emerging artists Brantley Gilbert and Love and Theft.  After more than two decades on the road, McGraw's ability to entertain and command a crowd continues to be a defining characteristic of both his artistry and superstar status.  Tampa Tribune described McGraw's live show as "effortless" while the Atlanta Journal Constitution remarked "he's so casually cool onstage" and OC Weekly said "It's a bold claim, but McGraw could and should be poised to reign as king of country music…"

Superstar Toby Keith thanks troops and their families with a three-country, 10-day USO tour April 28-May 7. Keith is visiting the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii to lift the spirits of troops and their loved ones.

Since his first USO tour in 2002, Keith has performed 11 USO tours and traveled to 15 countries plus the USS Enterprise, USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Cape Saint George. In total, the singer-songwriter has lifted the spirits of 225,984 servicemen and women.

Singer-songwriter Toby Keith makes the first stop of his 11-day, three-country tour in the Philippines on April 28. While in the region, Keith greeted troops at various JSOC military bases and performed his first 2013 USO concert. At left, Keith performs his acoustic show with Scotty Emerick.
"It feels so good to be back out visiting and performing for our troops in uniform and their families," Keith said. "I've toured a lot in my lifetime but nothing beats traveling with the USO, having the opportunity to uplift the spirits of our nation's service heroes and showing them that America is always by their side no matter where they are in the world."
This summer, Keith will hit the road on the "Toby Keith Hammer Down Tour Presented by Ford F-Series." The tour will begin June 8 in Ozark, AR.
The troops applaud Keith and Emerick as they entertain on April 28. Last year, Keith celebrated a decade of touring the globe with the USO and capped off the year with a return USO visit to the Middle East.
