Harris, Crowell And Thompson Wow Toronto

Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell graced the hallowed stage of Toronto’s Massey Hall and proved without question that Country Music is alive and well.
Harris and Crowell are longtime friends and collaborators, having known each other since the mid-70s when Crowell was a member of Harris' Hot Band. Both are veteran country music performers, and at this point in their careers they've nothing more to prove, either to an audience or to one another, than that they are still capable of making great music together.

With a five-piece backing band behind them, they opened the show with confidence, launching into "Grievous Angel," a song penned by another of Harris' former singing partners, the late Gram Parsons. From there, the band ran through a set of over 20 songs mostly covering songs Harris and Crowell have co-written together to songs written by a variety of songwriters, including several songs the duo recorded for their new album "Old Yellow Moon."

Harris and Crowell's friendship and ease with one another was readily apparent throughout the evening, both in their relaxed conversations between songs and in their playing and singing. They performed "Tulsa Queen" a song they co-wrote and which Harris recorded in 1977, and "Bluebird Wine," a song written by Crowell and a tune Harris said was one of the first songs she ever heard from him. "When I heard the demo of this song, I knew he had the right stuff," she told the audience. Harris’ voice was as in fine form, proving that he voice has aged like a fine Tennessee Whiskey.

In a show filled with high points, there were still some standout tunes such as "Back When We Were Beautiful" by Matraca Berg and "Chase the Feeling," written by Kris Kristofferson, both of which appear on "Old Yellow Moon." Their rendition of “Poncho & Lefty” made one feel Townes Van Zant’s presence in the theatre. Despite the upbeat feel of the show, both artists commented on how many sad songs they play together or have recorded over the years. After playing the Roger Miller tune "Invitation to the Blues," Crowell referred to the song as “miserable with a beat."
Opening the show was Richard Thompson and his Electric Trio. Thompson is, of course, a renowned singer-songwriter in his own right, and quite simply one of the best guitarists around. Currently touring in support of his latest record "Electric," Thompson, along with drummer Michael Jerome and bassist Taras Prodaniuk (both of whom contribute back up vocals), played a short but strong set covering some of his best known songs including "Keep Your Distance," "Sally B," and "Tear Stained Letter." When they played "Good Things Happen to Bad People" Thompson remarked that he's seen it happen. "I wouldn't sing it if it wasn't true," he said.
He also performed a solo acoustic version of what is perhaps his best known song, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning." Thompson's prowess as a player is obvious, but he is never ostentatious, and his musical strength is always used in the service of the song. An effortlessly fluid guitar player, several of the songs led to extended leads and jams with his band. His set was truly a joy to watch, and it was obvious there were many audience members who came primarily to hear Thompson.

Jewel Sings About Life and Love

So, what do you guys feel like hearing tonight?”
That was Jewel, two songs into her sold-out performance Saturday in the Events Center of the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls NY, making it clear that her performance would be much more of a folksy, intimate, “VH1 Storytellers” type of gig than a ritzy run-through of the hits in a casino ballroom. Which was interesting, because Saturday’s show was a stop on the folk singer’s “Greatest Hits” tour, which was meant to provide a career-overview for Jewel fans. What those fans got, however, turned out to be much more.
Though Jewel doesn’t sell as many records as she did during her ’90s heyday, the Alaskan-born singer-songwriter still commands a large and decidedly loyal fan base, made up of folks who enjoy her overtly honest ruminations on life and love. She emerged from the wings as if doing so was no big deal, grabbed one of several gorgeous Taylor acoustic guitars awaiting her attention, and dove straight into “Near You Always.” With her long hair tied back in a tight ponytail, and dressed in a sun dress adorned with stars and impressive Lucchese boots, Jewel appeared radiant, mellow and lovely. “Near You Always” was a searing piece, based around an open tuning and a melody that was infused with yearning – its circular pattern perfectly matched to the poetic, romantic imagery of the lyric. Opening with this tune was a brave move, because it is indeed one of Jewel’s most sophisticated. Commanding a large crowd’s attention with nothing but an acoustic guitar, a voice and some between-song banter is an incredibly tough gig. Folk-based songs, particularly when they rely on pop-based tropes, as Jewel’s songs do, are often better suited to a coffeehouse or church basement than to a large concert space. Pop requires at least some rhythm, and rhythm is best provided by bass and drums. But for the most part, Jewel kept things moving at an exciting pace, making sure to avoid placing tunes in similar keys and tempos next to each other.
Jewel does indeed come from the folk tradition. As was revealed during her between-song chats, she first started playing gigs as an 8-year-old, in a duo with her songwriting father. She left home at 15, eventually becoming a homeless songwriter attempting to scrape by on money earned from busking. She told one story of attempting to hop trains when she couldn’t afford legitimate transportation, an image which – perhaps self-consciously – ties her to the folk troubadour tradition established by the itinerant Woody Guthrie. Jewel is no Guthrie, nor is she a Bob Dylan, but she does know her way around a topical folk tune. “New Wild West” was one of these, a modal romp with many verses in the model of early Stones, with lyrics that adopt a reporter’s eye on society and culture. This tune worked, its image-heavy observations cutting deep.
Some of the love songs – encore “You Were Meant For Me” offering a prime example – were a bit on the twee, melodramatic side. ) But in fairness, this was the first song Jewel ever wrote, and the fact that it became her first hit in the midst of the male-dominated grunge era suggests that she was tapping into something significant.
Pacing in one-woman shows is everything, and happily, Jewel had it down. She grabbed an electric guitar for a torrid take on “Haunted,” which she described as “a song about a break-up” that boasted a narrator whose behavior “would probably be considered stalking in several states.” “Perfectly Clear” offered up her forays into country music in a succinct manner, and it was prefaced with some of the evening’s most poetic imagery. The singer told a story about observing patrons at a bar where she performed with her father as a young girl, noting “the great lengths women will go to get a compliment (and) what men will do to outrun their sorrow.” This set the song up wonderfully, and its chilling harmony and virtuosic singing were deeply affecting.
Throughout the evening, Jewel sang beautifully, easing from her comfort zone into a lilting falsetto, a near-yodel or a full-voiced top-of-range peak with seeming effortlessness. She is indeed a class act, and this show offered her fans an intimate glimpse into her songwriter’s psyche.

Doctor’s Orders A Tribute to Ralph Stanley

Don Rigsby Salutes His Chief Inspiration
In New Album:
Doctor’s Orders--A Tribute to Ralph Stanley
Stanley and Clinch Mountain Boys Alumni are among Guest Artists
Nashville, TN -- March 25, 2013 -- Don Rigsby’s life-long passion for the music of Dr. Ralph Stanley comes to full boil in his forthcoming album from Rebel Records, Doctor’s Orders: A Tribute to Ralph Stanley.
(Stanley has been referred to as Dr. Ralph Stanley since receiving his honorary doctorate in music from Lincoln Memorial University in 1976.)
“I’m so proud of the tribute record that Don Rigsby has done for me,” says Stanley.  “He has recorded some of my favorite material and brought new life to each song.”
Except for “The Mountain Doctor” (which Rigsby co-wrote with Larry Cordle, of “Murder on Music Row” fame), all the songs on the new album are ones Stanley recorded throughout his 67-year (and counting) career.  Some are rare gems the Old Master seldom or never performed in his stage shows.
Adding zest to the project are appearances by Stanley and former Clinch Mountain Boys Larry Sparks, Ricky Skaggs, Charlie Sizemore and Steve Sparkman.  Stanley’s lead guitarist, James Alan Shelton, plays on many of the 14 selections, as do such other prize-winning pickers as Ron Stewart and Barry Bales.  Rigsby produced the album.
Barely out of the cradle when he became enthralled by the high mournful sounds issuing from his brother’s 8-track tape player, Rigsby was a mature six years old the day he met Stanley at a show in Ashland, Kentucky.  It remains the musical highlight of his life.
Rigsby is a two-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner of the SPBGMA’s Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year awards.  He has performed and/or recorded with The Bluegrass Cardinals, J. D. Crowe & The New South, Lonesome River Band, Longview and Midnight Call.  His credits also include five solo albums and two IBMA awards for producing Larry Sparks’ comeback album, 40.  A graduate of Morehead State University, Rigsby was the first full-time director of that school’s Kentucky Center for Traditional Music.
The first single from the album, “The Mountain Doctor,” will be made available for digital purchase as a special pre-album promotion next Tuesday, April 2 via iTunes, Amazon, eMusic and other digital outlets.  The full album Doctor’s Orders: A Tribute to Ralph Stanley will be released May 21.

Lady A Shares Details of 12-Track Disc
Available in Stores on May 7
Nashville, TN – March 25, 2013 – For Seven-time GRAMMY winning trio Lady Antebellum, their upcoming fourth Capitol Records Nashville release GOLDEN out May 7 was figuratively – and literally – borne on the move.
The harmony-based trio and its sizeable fan base bonded heavily during the band’s headlining Own The Night World Tour– an over-sized road trip, if there ever was one. The shows themselves were inspirational. But so was the time offstage. Lady A made a point of experimenting and creating with its road band as the one-nighters and the miles of travel piled up. That behind-the-scenes interaction inspired much of the music on GOLDEN, an instantly infectious project in which Lady A discovered new edges for its already-successful foundation.
“We were just kind of in that live show mindset for this album,” said Lady A’s Dave Haywood. “We had that perspective of being on a tour and having seen what translates in an arena. We have a better idea what kind of songs are so relatable where it shakes everybody like, ‘Oh, my God, I’ve totally been there.’”
“Every band I love that’s been here for a long time has reinvented itself in some way,” added Charles Kelley. “There’s a balance to it. I get a little annoyed when people reinvent themselves too much because there’s a reason people fell in love with you in the first place, but I think it’s important not to regurgitate the same stuff over and over again.”
Lady Antebellum’s familiar, established blend remains firmly intact, but there’s a sense of renewal about it, too.  Lady A and veteran producer Paul Worley return as co-producers on GOLDEN, a reinvented version of Lady A that’s familiar but simultaneously unlike any of its predecessors. It’s an achievement that comes from the band’s journey, and from its willingness to risk. “Downtown,” GOLDEN’s funky lead single, first announced the new direction in January. The band gave it an energetic, playful performance with a noticeably cleaner production than the previous album. The recording uses fewer instruments – each of them framed distinctly in the sound – and Scott delivers the lead vocal with a full-on attitude that’s never been completely realized in previous recordings.
“We embraced risk,” noted Hillary Scott. “When you are pushing yourself to not go back to the same well, you’re gonna come up with something different, or you’ll find songs that are different. And that’s what happened on this album.”
In some ways, GOLDEN also reaffirms the very beginnings of Lady Antebellum. The project focuses on deft songwriting and fresh uses of their talents, which was at the heart of what drew them together in the first place. In the end, the mix of their road experiences, songwriting and challenging outside songs adds a brightness to the album that’s reflected in the GOLDEN title.
GOLDEN Track List:

1. Get To Me
2. Goodbye Town
3. Nothin' Like The First Time
4. Downtown
5. Better Off Now (That You're Gone)
6. It Ain't Pretty
7. Can't Stand The Rain
8. Golden
9. Long Teenage Goodbye
10. All For Love
11. Better Man
12. Generation Away
Since its 2006 inception, the group had risen quickly to become Country Music’s most influential current group. Lady A won the “Vocal Group of the Year” honor from both the CMA and from the ACM’s three times in a row and sold 11 million albums worldwide. Eight of the band’s singles went Gold, with four surpassing the Platinum mark. “Need You Now” went on to sell over seven million downloads and claimed five of the trio’s seven career GRAMMY wins, including the all-genre “Record and Song of the Year.” For more information on new music, visit
