Steel Guitar News November 29. 2012

This is Vic Lawson with today’s newsletter. We have had a great response to Bob’s last newsletter about “boredom” on stage. You’re really not as bored when you’re a beginner or part-timer because it’s all fresh and new to you. The pros are more apt to get bored because they play more often. Not to kick a dead horse, but I’d like to add my two cents. We all can get bored whether it be an artist gig that lasts 75 – 90 minutes or a four hour club gig. And although some tunes require the “signature” licks, most of the time I try to think about the way I would play it if I were the one recording it. If I’m downtown in a club, I don’t want to play something like Lloyd Green would play, I want to play something I would play. If I’m on a show where everybody is expecting the signature to be true to the recording, then that’s the way I’m going to do it. I fall into the trap when we play covers of remembering what was originally on the cut. I played with James Mitchell last Saturday and he has the ability to completely ignore what was originally played and create something fresh and new. In other words, he takes songs that were recorded in 1972 and brings them up to 2012. This makes it very enjoyable to work with him, whether it be in a recording session or a club. It makes me think differently and brings out more creativity. Being creative is especially important in a recording situation. Playing with people like James seems to help me on my toes because one of my gigs I have been on for seven years, twice a week, four hours at a time, playing the same songs for the most part. So try playing something you would play instead of what is on the record. Also, I had a customer in yesterday and he was asking a lot of questions about how to get better, and I was reminded about what a friend of mine had been told. The best way to really learn is find the worst band in your area and go out and play with them. It will really make you learn what you need to when you play in a band situation and as you get better you will find the bands you play with will too. This really helps beginners I think because it not only helps with steel guitar but your musical learning as well. You can sit in your bedroom and practice all you want, but the first time you sit in with a band, it’s a whole new ballgame because you’re now part of a team and you have to learn to work as a team versus solo in the bedroom. The more you play with live musicians, the more you learn to work in the real world. You can study all you want, but until you put it into practice, you haven’t really learned. So get out and play with other musicians because that’s how you really how you achieve your goals. Don’t quit practicing because you need both. To sum it up, if you play live with a band, that will tell you what you need to go home and practice on. It will show you where your weak spots are. If you’re able to record the live performance, you’ve got something you can take home and listen to and help you figure out what you need to work on most because there are so many things that you learn from listening back. If anybody would like to hear me and James playing, check out Justin McBride’s new CD, called “Everybody Loves A Cowboy”. His website is http://justinmcbride.com/ We have a Mullen Discovery guitar on the showroom floor that I’ve been playing with. It’s a great guitar, sounds good, great quality, lightweight. I’m really thinking about buying one for myself because it’s a great guitar at a nice price and it’s good to have a second guitar that sounds good. Call me if you want to talk about this guitar in a little more depth and I’ll be glad to give you my impressions. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We have a few exciting things on our agenda for the next year and when the time comes, we will elaborate. Re-Release des Platin-Albums “Liberty Of Action (Black Edition)”
SAT.1-Rockumentary “No Deals With The Devil”
Neue Tour-Termine 2013

God loves Cowboys!

Beste Vorzeichen also und höchste Zeit für „Liberty Of Action – Black Edition“!

Neben dem aktuellen Mega-Hit „Deals With The Devil“ sind auf „Liberty Of Action – Black Edition“ zusätzlich die Singlefassung des Hits „Live It Up“, der Trucker-Song „Nothing But The Best“, a.k.a.

Touren in Texas, Headbangen in Wacken: The BossHoss rocken seit über acht Jahren „an jeder Steckdose“(Alec Völkel).

LEE BRICE MARKS FIRST HOMETOWN ARENA SHOW WITH PRE-GAME RIVALY CONCERT

Brice Scheduled for Upcoming Gameday Performances at
ACC Championship and Sun Bowl

Nashville, TN – Nov. 28, 2012 – Award winning singer/songwriter Lee Brice stormed Littlejohn Coliseum for his first hometown arena show this weekend before rivalry weekend’s Clemson vs. USC game. Friday night, the former Tiger football player revved up fans for the big game with the help of Clemson’s marching band, closing the night with “OrangeEmpire,” the fight song that Brice wrote and recorded as the team’s gameday power anthem.

“We had a blast this weekend in Clemson…even though our guys didn't take the win," said Brice. “I’ve been wanting to play at the Clemson vs. South Carolina game for years, so I knew we had to do something exciting to surprise all our hometown fans…the band did a great job helping me pull that off. We were all on fire straight through watching the guys run down the hill to ‘Orange Empire.’  It was a really cool moment for me as a former player, a musician and a fan!’”

Brice is scheduled for two additional upcoming pre-game concerts this football season. He will kick off the ACC Championship game in Charlotte, NC on Dec. 1 and the Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX on New Year’s Eve. For a full list of upcoming tour dates, visit www.leebrice.com.

Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon was full of love and support for the Jersey Shore and the Caramanna family on Tuesday night. Carly Caramanna's (Moore's publicist) family home and business were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and a few days after the devastation hit, her 54-year-old father suffered a fatal heart attack. The Caramanna family and the Jersey Shore had their spirits lifted when Justin Moore flagshipped a benefit concert that featured his friends, Jake Owen, Randy Houser and Thomas Rhett. The proceeds collected for the Caramanna family and the hurricane victims in New Jersey totaled over $20,000. The proceeds will be split to help both the Caramanna family and the Jersey Shore Relief Fund. The Caramanna family were also presented with a generous charitable donation from Big Machine Label Group and Scott Borchetta.  "I was completely blown away by the Nashville community. Their love and support has kept us going through this difficult time," stated Carly.

Chances & Circumstances’ is the most recent CD released by Milagro Saints. It is being released by Moon Caravan Records. Upon first listening to this Album, I was not very impressed. It wasn’t until walking away from it that I could envision myself at an outdoor music festival sitting on a blanket in a field on a warm springtime afternoon. I realized the soft melodies were carrying me through the day. Many days in my youth were spent at these types of shows. The most memorable being the Almond Brothers shows in Florida. Just thinking of those shows or memories of Greatful Dead shows made me realize I had to take another listen. I hadn’t originally given it the justice it deserved
The “Intro” gives the listener a prelude of what’s to come, a very warm blues harp with a dash of tambourine. It gets you into that mind-frame that lets you know this won’t be one of those albums that you’ll be hearing on pop music top forty charts in the near future. I don’t believe it ever was meant to be.
“Free” really gets the album started. That and “Morning Song” really get you into that feeling I was referring to in the beginning. You really can imagine you are at an outdoor festival. The kind of music festival you wind up camping out at. “Morning Song” really is a blend of folk and funk.

“Evangelyne” has a completely different feeling to it. This song and “Midnight Flame” almost stand apart from the other songs. They have an eerie sound that makes you almost picture the streetlamps and shadows that haunt the cities at night. The kind where you are alone and hear animals digging or scurrying around, or weird noises in dark alleyways that make the hair on your arms stand up.
“These Things (About You)” is a much more upbeat song. It is pushed along by either an accordion or harmonica “Don’t Give It Up” keeps the album moving at this pace. The saxophone solos really compliment it.
“Pennsylvania Rose” is the most recognized song by anyone who has listened to this CD. It is truly a beautiful song. Lyrically speaking it is one of the best on the album. It is a great jam that’ll get anyone singing along with it. The piano, the beat, the guitar; this is the song that the band really unleashes its full power.
“Ghost” is a much less recognized song, but was the song that originally grabbed my full attention. It has a real southern draw. It is the song that I wrote of in the beginning that I found myself constantly thinking about all day. “Golden Day” brings a nice sense of peace to the album. That same feeling is carried through to “The Other Side of the River.” Just as its name sounds it is a somewhat mystical song. It has a New Age feel to it. It mixes the science of space and time bending which Einstein first spoke of, and the thoughts of what happens upon our death.
The “Untitled” piece has a nice sound of chimes and bells and is a fitting last song for the album. This CD seems to grow on you the more you listen to it. It is a great addition to any collection. This is not a band that will be going away any time soon. I almost can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.
