Brice To Perform On Late Night With Jimmy Fallon Tomorrow

Nashville, TN – Nov. 12, 2012 – In the spirit of Veterans Day, award-winning singer/songwriter Lee Brice will release his new single "I Drive Your Truck" this week. The powerful track is available this Friday and officially goes for adds on Dec. 3, and the very personal music video will simultaneously debut on CMT.

“The first time I heard this song, I knew I had to record it,” said Brice. “It immediately reminded me of my granddaddy and it hit really close to home.  When we went to make the video, I wanted to be sure that I made it personal.  So, I asked my brother Lewis to play the lead and I am really proud of what he added.”

Written by Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary, “I Drive Your Truck” was handpicked by USA Today as their track to download on Brice’s current HARD 2 LOVE album, and The New York Times described it as “an electric, overpowering song…Mr. Brice sang it vigorously.”

“I Drive Your Truck” follows Brice’s multi-week No. one “Hard To Love,” which he’ll perform tomorrow on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon airing at 11:35P CT. “Hard To Love” is the second consecutive chart-topping hit off his sophomore release on Curb records HARD 2 LOVE. From New York City, Brice will head back to the road with tour dates scheduled this weekend in Lake City, FL (11/15), Westlake, LA (11/16) and San Antonio, TX (11/17). Detour Bluegrass Band Partners with Goodwill to Help Homeless Veterans

Detour Bluegrass Band Partners with
Goodwill to Help Homeless Veterans
Detour presenting Goodwill of Northern MI $1,000 towards the Patriot Place
Traverse City, MI (November 12, 2012)  The Michigan based bluegrass band DETOUR is donating proceeds from the sales of its song "Homeless Of The Brave" to Goodwill’s Patriot Place project. Patriot Place is a transitional housing community for Northern Michigan’s homeless veterans. DETOUR recently presented Goodwill with a check for $1,000 which is the first of what they hope will be many installments.
The song, which is included on their newest release A BETTER PLACE, was written by band member Jeff Rose as a direct response to a story that he heard on the radio about the plight of homeless veterans.  Rose was "stunned to learn that there are approximately 70,000 homeless veterans in this country and over 600 in northern Michigan alone".
The song is a story about American veterans who return home, only to find they cannot get jobs, or in some cases, even find places to live and sleep.  The chorus of the song sums up the hopefulness that Detour has for this project:
It's time we stand up and say,
there'll be hell to pay, if another soldier dies upon these streets,
In the richest land on earth, please tell me what it's worth,
if we let them go down in defeat, oh there has to be a way that we can save,
those living in the land of the free and the homeless of "The Brave."
Rose wrote most of the song and finished it on the way to a Veteran's Day performance in Manistee.  Rose performed the song with Missy Armstrong, DETOUR''s lead singer that evening to an enthusiastic, lengthy standing ovation.  Based on that response and the ongoing feedback that Detour has received around the song they decided to seek a partnership with Goodwill to do whatever they can to assist homeless veterans.   Rose noted that "I find it totally unfathomable that this situation exists in America, with all of the abundance that we enjoy".
Michigan "bluegrass powerhouse" DETOUR has two songs from their current album, A BETTER PLACE, in the top ten  on the national bluegrass charts and is targeting airplay for the "Homeless Of The Brave" across the country with the goal of helping to raise even more awareness and funds.  A BETTER PLACE is available online at, and   Downloads of the song may be purchased through iTunes, Amazon and other online retail outlets.
The needs of homeless veterans are significant.  Frequently, veterans have experienced horrific scenarios in war zones, resulting in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These challenges often lead to substance abuse issues.  Sometime the skills learned while in active duty do not necessarily easily translate into the civilian workforce.  However, these men have learned many other very employable leadership skills – they just need our help. Each of these factors can contribute to homelessness, and studies have shown that veterans overcome such obstacles in an environment of their peers.
Goodwill’s Patriot Place helps homeless veterans:
- cope with mental disabilities such as PTSD
- overcome substance abuse issues
- secure income through employment or VA and/or Social Security/Disability benefits
- find permanent housing.

Steel Guitar News November 12. 2012

This is Vic Lawson with today’s newsletter. I really like it when I get emails back from you guys because it lets me know somebody is paying attention and that what I have to say makes sense to you. Here is an email I got from a lead guitar player which really made me smile. Good afternoon, Vic! It’s good to see you back at the newsletter again. I look forward to yours, Bobbe’s and Bob’s writings twice a week…I’ve been a reporter, editor, and for the last seventeen years, an English teacher. I have been so impressed at how well you guys write! What I’m writing you for today is to let you know is that even though I’m not a pedal steel player, I really take your advice to heart. A month or so ago, I had the crappiest gig I’ve ever played…I wanted to hang up the Strat forever! Then on Monday I got your newsletter about not letting your personal emotions interfere with the gig. I got to thinking about my lousy gig, and BAM! I realized I had been down about issues with my kids, and it really affected my playing. The next gig I made sure I had my head straight, and it probably was the greatest gig ever! Since then I’ve made sure I followed your advice, and man, it’s been nothing but blue skies! So, thanks a bunch, and keep sending those battle-hardened gems of advice! By the way, I’m still working at the lap steel…I’m working with the C6 tuning…love it. I still dream of buying a pedal steel from you guys. There is no sound that compares! Thanks to all and have a great Thanksgiving! Rick Cox Llano, Texas That is a great story! It’s good to know these newsletters do some good. I personally find it difficult to have good ideas, but stories like these are really make it worth the effort. I feel that I am repetitive sometimes in my letters, but these topics are just some of the things that I’ve encountered through my career that have improved my playing. So if I get too repetitive, please be patient. Between Bob Hempker and I, will bring you the best newsletters that we can. Here’s another email reply. Hi Vic , Thank you so much for poppin in these emails, They are so valuable, I`m in a 3 pce band w/no drummer and I`m on the steel, I hit the jackpot everytime I read your emails, On the mental side of things, Not to stand out at all but Last night I dressed up pretty sharp (I looked like doc holiday without a hat or badge) It really felt good to do this because I am also working on this mental attitude and this is why I tried this, well it helped a little bit more than anything else I`ve tried , I know I`ve been experimenting the songs and it appears its my absolute solid problem, You`ve brought this to my attention. I see this may be the problem I`m facing , Possibly not enough time to practice the experiment with the different tempos that are sped up with the band , not on purpose (no drummer) Wrong tempos just destroy certain solos that you think you`ve nailed down, It gives me a mental breakdown. Lookin sharp helped me last night , I just thought I`d share that with you, Thanks for the tip on experimenting, I`m not going to do this anymore. Craig Schwartz There is a book that a friend of mine turned me on to titled “Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within” by Kenny Werner. It is a great tool. You might find it worth the time to read it. Interview with Mike Slater ~ Tribute to Elvis

Interview with Mike Slater ~ Tribute to Elvis

Lamitschka:  What kind of songs do you like to record the most?

Mike Slater:  Well being an Elvis Tribute Artist for 17 years now my favorite songs to record would have to be Elvis songs . Elvis had such an amazing range to his voice that carried him over to many genres of music Gospel, Country, Rythem and Blues to name a few. I think perhaps my favorite music to record would have to be Gospel. Love the feeling it gives me when I sing it and the emotions my audience have when they hear me belt it out.

Lamitschka:  What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what's the story behind it?

Mike Slater:  I’m gonna have to fall back again on Elvis Gospel and go with “How Great Though Art“. This was one of Elvis’s most beloved of all the Gospel songs, he performed it in every concert from 1972 till his passing in 1977. This song really shows the strength of my voice, as well as the range, and I believe I do it justice .

Lamitschka:  Do you have any interesting stories about how fans have been affected by your music?

Mike Slater:  What amazes me about my Career as an Elvis Tribute Artist is that its never ending. Elvis has such devoted fans we are talking about a man who died in 1977, Thirty-five years ago and his home is the most visited home in the United States, next to the white house. I did a performance a few years back for the police department of a local town in Massachusetts and was blown away at the age demographics that attendeed. I had children ranging in age from 6 on up mouthing the words to songs that are over 40 years old? Incredible that one man has touched so many generatioins of music lovers.

Lamitschka:  Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?

Mike Slater:  I’ve been an Elvis fan singe I was 6 years old and I’m now 45, so I would have to say Elvis tops that list. Since a very young age I’ve also listened to artist such as Jerry Vale, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior, Sergio Frankie, Tom Jones and all the heavy crooners of that period. Men with unbeliavable range of vocal abilities, that’s what inspired me. I remember thinking as a kid listening and saying, “Wow, if I only could sing like that!“

Lamitschka:  What do you think about today's music scene versus its post and where do you see it going in the future?

Mike Slater:  Honestly todays music is more synthesized and computer generated voices for my taste. I am all about the vocals. The music industry has changed so much with the computer generation and technology. It’s sad to hear that most of the schools in the United States are dropping music classes, why learn an instrument when you can just play one on a computer and tell it what notes to play.

Lamitschka:  If you had the chance to change something about the music industry, what would it be?

Mike Slater:  To get back to basics of real instrumentation, and to bring back the music for our children. I’d also like to see some more vocalists for a change, instead of all the computerized and synthesized music we hear today.

Lamitschka:  As an artist, you so many tasks such as recording, touring, interviews. What do you like best, what's your favorite activity?

Mike Slater:  I would have to say as an Elvis Tribute Artist, performing in front of a live audience. Elvis himself always loved to please the crowd, he fed off of the excitement and the energy of it. I love to watch the facial expressions of the audience, to see the smiles, and sometimes it gets very emotional, especially if your able to hit home for someone who loved Elvis. I was once given a hundred dollar tip from a man who said I made his wife cry her eyes out when I sang for her. He added, “I’ve never see her cry before, and I’ve been with her over 20 years, you touched her soul, and you earned every cent of this one hundered dollar bill, thank you so much for a wonderful night, it was truly amazing!“ So Performing Live, and seeing something like this happen, is definately the BEST feeling for me!

Lamitschka:  What was your big break that got you into the music business?

Mike Slater:  To be honest I really have not had that Big Break yet. As an Elvis Tribute Artist it’s all about being in the right place at the right time, there are over 33,000 Elvis Tribute Artists in the world today, and over 20,000 are in the United States alone, so you can imagine the competition we face. I do my performing part time at the moment and I would love to be out there doing it full time, but until that certain person sees me and gives me that break the financial aspect of being an Elvis Tribute Artist is not that profitable and almost impossible without that break.

Lamitschka:  What inspired you to become an artist?

Mike Slater:  I’ve been singing along with Elvis records since I was six years old and at twenty-five my family and friends pushed me into going out and singing professionally. What better encouragement than having fans who have seen Elvis live when he was alive, telling you to keep his memory alive. So I do dinner shows, private functions, and cruise ship parties, and as long as the fans keep liking it I’ll keep doing it, because it is Elvis’s Fans who inspire me the most!

Lamitschka:  What does it take to be a music icon?

Mike Slater:  Practice! Practice! Practice! And you have to love what you do. It’s one thing to be an Icon like Elvis was, but it’s a totally different thing to Impersonate an Icon. You almost have to strive to be better than the original, but keep your head in the right place and respect the original. The hardest part for me is to keeping in shape. Elvis from 1968-1973, which is the Elvis period that I want to portray, he was still in great shape. I am forty-five years old and Elvis died at forty-two, luckily I have been blessed with good genes and I look much younger than I am. I have done many shows with fans that have seen Elvis live and gotten white silk scarves from him, coming up to me at the end of my show and praising me for what I do, and comparing me to the King himself, and saying I’m the best tribute artist that they have ever seen. It definately makes me feel great, that I am acomplishing this for them, but at the same time you have to keep your perspective and stay true to who you are. On stage I am for all intensive purposes trying my hardest to fill Elvis’s shoes for his fans, but when I’m off that stage, I’m back to being myeslf, Mike Slater. An Image is one thing, an Icon is another, Elvis was an Icon and there will never be another! He was an amzing entertainer and individual and I am happy that I have been blessed these past seventeen years to pay tribute to such a man ...
