Rebel Records Releases Fresh Single from Two-Time IBMA Winner, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice
"The Story Of The Day That I Died" Available To Radio Today, Complete Project To Be Released March 12th
Charlottesville, VA. (November 6, 2012)—Rebel Records is proud to announce the release of "The Story Of The Day That I Died", a brand new single from Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice. The new song is available to radio programmers today and the complete project, Story Of The Day That I Died, will be released March 12th.
When Junior Sisk heard his name called as the winner of Song Of The Year for "A Far Cry From Lester And Earl" from the stage of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee during the recent International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, he could hardly believe it and could barely speak through his tears of joy. Sisk and his co-writers, Tim Massey and Rick Pardue hugged each other in disbelief and excitement as the sold-out crowd rose to their feet and cheered them on. It wasn't until later in the evening, when Sisk again heard his name called as winner of Album Of The Year for his band's latest Rebel Records CD, The Heart Of A Song, that he managed to gain composure and express appreciation for his colleagues, friends and fans. It was a big night for a man who has been regarded as being one of bluegrass music's most honest voices in the genre's history.
Throughout his music career, Sisk has performed with a plethora of topnotch bands: his family’s band - Dreamin’ Creek, Wyatt Rice And Santa Cruz, The Lost And Found and then eventually with Blueridge where Sisk partnered with mandolinist Alan Bibey from 2001 to 2006. In 2007, he re-formed Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice (a band that had a short but successful run in the mid 90’s) and has been going strong ever since. Over the years, his haunting, almost lonesome vocals have earned him the devotion of countless traditional bluegrass fans from all over the world so it comes as no surprise that his peers would recognize his contributions and honor him on what has become known as bluegrass music's biggest night. But with the accolades of Song of The Year and Album of the Year, comes a certain amount of expectancy from those same peers as well as Sisk's fans as to what he and Ramblers Choice will present next.
Rebel Records is excited to present the next chapter in the career of Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice in the form of a brand new single, "The Story Of The Day That I Died", a tongue in cheek tune about a man who faked his own death in an effort to keep his unfaithful wife from taking half of his possessions upon an impending divorce. Written by fellow musician Ashby Frank, "The Story Of The Day That I Died" has been a song in the making for quite some time. "I wrote most of this song about nine years ago on a paper bag while sitting in my car during a snow storm in a McDonald's parking lot in Pikeville, Kentucky," states Frank. "I played what I had of the song for Junior and his wife, Susan, at their home one night shortly after I wrote it. He liked it and even suggested the theme for the ending of the song." According to Frank, Sisk kept asking him about it, resulting in Frank giving the song another work-over, and ultimately pitching it to Sisk again. The song not only landed on the record, but is the title cut of the new project due for release next Spring. "I'm so proud that he decided to recorded it," continues Frank. "Junior Sisk is not just one of my favorite singers and writers alive, but he's also one of my favorite people in the world and I couldn't be happier with the way he and Rambler's Choice performed it on the album."
"The Story Of The Day That I Died"
"The Story Of The Day That I Died" is the first single from the new CD and is available to radio programmers today via digital download at Airplay Direct and also through a special email download from Rebel Records. Radio programmers interested in receiving the single via an email link, may do so by sending their request to email@example.com. The complete CD titled Story Of The Day That I Died is slated for release on March 12, 2013. NEW ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Bill Gentry
By Bob Doerschuk
© 2012 CMA Close Up® News Service / Country Music Association®, Inc.
Rather than flow in one direction, similar to a storyline in a single song, Bill Gentry’s life has veered in a dozen directions. The son of a minister who died when he was 2, Gentry won the state 4-H performance contest, got kicked out of his high school band, was kidnapped along with two of his colleagues in a rock band, served as president of his junior college class, ran for city council, launched a successful data-compiling company, interned for Sen. Sam Nunn in Washington, was lovingly told by his sister that she never wants to sing with him again and most recently founded and ran Wild Bill’s, the huge and successful Country venue near Atlanta.
In that last incarnation, Gentry booked many of the biggest acts in the business. Though he’d never really stopped playing, being witness to great shows night after night rekindled Gentry’s determination to aim for his own place in the spotlight too.
He does so on his single, “Hell and Half of Georgia.” Written by Doug Johnson and Tim James, released on Oct. 22, its laid-back soulful groove, simmering gospel feel (think: “People Get Ready,” especially on the verses, with guitar licks borrowed from Tony Joe White) and images of paying dues as a musician suggest a deeply personal connection to Gentry’s life. And his singing, yearning with sweet pain, makes that suggestion beyond doubt.
IN HIS OWN WORDS

FAVORITE FOOD ON THE ROAD
WHAT YOU’D BE IF NOT AN ARTIST
“Governor of Georgia.”
MOMENT YOU’D LIKE TO RELIVE
“The opening night of Wild Bill’s – there were 5,000 people there!”
“My fifth-grade talent show. I took second place. Dang baton twirler!”
SOMETHING WE’D NEVER GUESS ABOUT YOU
“I am a clean freak.”

Dierks Bentley Dedicates a Day to CMA
By Bob Doerschuk
© 2012 CMA Close Up® News Service / Country Music Association®, Inc.
Through the CMA Songwriters Series, fans around the United States and abroad continue to experience first-hand the creativity of those behind-the-scenes Nashville pros who write hits for the stars. At most of these shows, they benefit as well from hearing one participant who straddles both sides of the line between writing and performing.
That honor went to Dierks Bentley when he performed in a Songwriters Series show Sept. 6 at New York’s Joe’s Pub. But he also devoted that morning to a visit to PS 103, the Hector Fontanez School, in the Bronx, where a CMA donation of $20,000 enabled the school to open a music program for students for the first time. To commemorate this first outreach beyond the Nashville area of CMA’s Keep the Music Playing program, the artist shared his thoughts with an assembly of fourth-graders about the value of learning about music – and was delighted when they started singing along as he performed “5-1-5-0,” which they had rehearsed prior to his arrival.
"It’s a great honor to be a part of this, to get a bunch of musical instruments to the classroom so teachers for the first time can have music as an option for their curriculum,” he reflected while on his way out from Manhattan for this event. “I’m really excited to see how all the money that’s been raised through CMA is being used here.”
Hours after receiving his surprise serenade, Bentley was back in Manhattan to participate in that evening’s CMA Songwriters Series show at Joe’s Pub, along with Jim Beavers, Jaren Johnston and host Bob DiPiero. The atmosphere there was a bit different than at PS 103. Certainly the audience was older. But both of these CMA initiatives are about bringing music to people in ways they might not yet have experienced.
“The big goal tonight is just to represent Country Music and CMA, to show all the work that goes into Country Music and provide a wide spectrum of what it is,” Bentley said. “What makes Country Music great, what comes out of these writers’ nights, is the song. We pass along, hopefully, some great songs to people, whether they’re Country fans or not. If they weren’t Country fans before, hopefully they’ll walk out as new ones.”
Most who take part in the Songwriters Series work behind the scenes, writing words and music that singers might turn into hits. Usually, at least one participant is a high-profile performer too. For them, these shows provide an interesting contrast to their usual onstage presentations.
“It’s totally different,” Bentley acknowledged. “Before my live shows, I’ll be listening to the Foo Fighters or Van Halen at the loudest possible volume, jumping up and down, going crazy. You have to get ready to go out and fight. Tonight, it’ll be a laid-back hang with the guys. We’ll have some beers, laugh and catch up. Then we’ll go out onstage with that same vibe, sit down on our stools, tell some stories and have fun with the crowd.”
Some preparation is involved, but spontaneity characterizes most of what happens in the CMA Songwriters Series. “There are definitely no set lists,” Bentley said. “You keep some songs in the back of your head and pick what you’re going to do by feeding off the guy before you and setting up the guy after you. If the two songs before you are about whiskey or something depressing, you want to pick it up — or vice versa. That’s completely different from what I do every other day.”
A key goal is to introduce the unsung heroes of Music Row and spotlight their songs as examples of modern Country craftsmanship. But there are performance elements in this setting too, just as on an arena stage. “This is really Bob DiPiero’s thing,” Bentley said. “He’s the top — the Kenny Chesney of writers’ rounds. He can hold the audience in the palm of his hand. Guys like Bob and Rivers Rutherford, they just smoke me every time in these writers’ nights.”
Having played his share of writer nights at the Bluebird Cafe, Douglas Corner Cafe and elsewhere as a newcomer to Nashville in the mid ‘90s, Bentley more than holds his own in any live situation — including a roomful of young fans at PS 103. That experience stirred memories of his experiences with music education, at Phoenix Country Day School in Arizona.
“They didn’t have electric guitars in the school band,” he remembered. “So I wanted to play bass guitar, but a guy named Ryan Fox had already lined that up. So I had to go with the saxophone, which was definitely not my instrument of choice. But it ended up being great. I learned to read music and to play along with other people. It definitely planted a seed and showed me that music could be played rather than just listened to.”
Bentley thought for a second and then laughed. “I should have brought that saxophone along and donated it today. It might have had more use than it’s getting now.”

SAMMY KERSHAW, BAND AND CREW INVOLVED
IN BUS ACCIDENT
Nashville, Tenn. (November 5, 2012) – This past weekend, Sammy Kershaw, his band and crew were involved in a roadway accident while on tour in Texas.
On Friday night after hitting the road following a concert in Nocona, Texas, Kershaw’s bus was struck by another passenger vehicle. The bus was impacted at a high speed, causing major damage, leaving the vehicle inoperable. The driver of the vehicle that struck Kershaw’s bus was taken to hospital with injuries. Kershaw, his band and crew were shaken and sore but not seriously injured.
“My guys and I are a little sore today… the third day is always the worst,” says Kershaw. “Eleven people were involved in the accident and no one was killed. It could have gone the other way. Buses and cars can be replaced but people can’t. I’m so thankful that the other driver, my band and crew are all still here. We had a guardian angel."
Kershaw has not canceled any concerts and will use alternate means of transportation until his bus is repaired.
