Steel Guitar News November 1. 2012

This is Bob Hempker with today’s newsletter. Working here in the store, I get to play more steel guitars in a month than many of you get to play in a lifetime. Six, eight, ten string, all pull, push pull, non-pedal, Sho-Bud, Emmons, GFI, Carter, Mullen, Zumsteel and on and on. When you get to play as many diverse steel guitars as I do, you get a much better idea of how really different and unique the different steel guitars are. For instance, there are many different models of Sho-Bud. Every time you turned around they came out with a new model. If can make a comparison, Corvettes or Chevys and Silverados are Chevys, but they’re not the same ride. They’re completely different vehicles. The same goes for Sho-Buds. Sitting down behind a Super Pro, a Baldwin Cross-over or an old permanent setup, they are totally different guitars in spite of all being Sho-Buds. This diversity can make finding the best guitar for yourself a bit of a challenge. Sometimes it can be a trade-off. You may sacrifice some tone to play a guitar that is easy to work on and plays easy. On the other hand, you may find the better tone worth the drawbacks of playing a guitar you may have difficulty finding parts for or that’s difficult to work on or may not have real smooth pedal action. We have to be real honest with ourselves first of all. What is of the most paramount importance to us personally. We have to really come to terms with ourselves sometimes and blot out what anyone else says about a certain instrument. Deep inside we all know what we really want, we just have to search for it. Figuring out what you’re willing to compromise on and what you’re not is a good starting place in your search for a steel guitar. I remember when I was a kid, I didn’t have a lot of money and I bought a guitar that I wasn’t really happy with but that I could afford. It was workable is about all I can say. I learned an important lesson from that. Buy the guitar you want to live with, not for the price on the price tag. Be choosy because you’ve got to live with the guitar long after you’ve paid for it. The same thing applies to amplifiers and any other piece of equipment. Buy it for what it does, not what it costs. Every dollar you save on the purchase will probably buy you ten dollars worth of frustration on the backside. I’m not saying this to get you to buy high dollar equipment, I’m saying this to get you to buy the right equipment and the right equipment is the equipment that gets the job done the way it needs to be done. You don’t want the frustration of trying to hammer a nail in with a screwdriver just because the screwdriver was cheaper than the hammer. Getting back to the original subject of the difference between guitars, not only are the different models within the same brand name different, but the instruments vary from guitar to guitar even in the same model. Not all push pulls are created equal and not all LeGrandes are created equal. There are so many variables from one guitar to the next, one may sustain a little better than the next. Another guitar may have a brighter, or a darker tone. Another guitar may just have that great feel that makes you feel you’re really in control of the instrument. Other variable such as different pickups, different types of strings, cables, even picks. Also, the sounds that comes out of your amplifier is part of your instrument. Certain guitars match up better with certain amplifiers. Nowadays, we have different sorts of effects and volume pedals that also play a role in the mix. I wanted you to be aware of all these variables when you go shopping for any steel guitar or accessory so that you can make the best choices for yourself. Figure out what your bottom line is, what you’re really after and then go for it. We have lots of friends in the area who come by just to visit and play guitars that are on the floor. They’re usually not looking to buy a new guitar because they’ve already got a spare bedroom full of them. Every so often they all seem to gravitate to one particular guitar. This guitar is so good that I’m surprised that it’s still here. I won’t hold you in suspense any longer or make you try to guess which one it is. I’m going to tell you. It’s the brown Sho-Bud Pro III, 8/4, triple raise, double lower all pull guitar. This is just a sweetheart of a guitar. Anybody in the market would do well to scarf this one up. It plays smooth and easy, the tone is creamy and it’s been really well cared for. It’s like finding a ’55 Chevy convertible in pristine condition sitting on your local Chevy dealer’s car lot. If you love classics, this is one of them. Finding ideas for these newsletters is not always an easy job. Quite often they are inspired by someone coming into the store and asking a question, or calling on the phone or emailing their problems. So if you’ve got anything on your mind that you’d like to know more about, please hollar at us. We love to hear from you and it makes our job easier at the same time. Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw Win CMA Musical Event of the Year for “Feel Like A Rock Star”; Toby Keith and Director Michael Salomon Win CMA Music Video of the Year for “Red Solo Cup”

Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw Win CMA Musical Event of the Year for “Feel Like A Rock Star”; Toby Keith and Director Michael Salomon Win CMA Music Video of the Year for
“Red Solo Cup”

NASHVILLE – Winners in two of the 12 CMA Awards categories were announced live on “Good Morning America” from New York’s Times Square this morning. The news was welcomed with cheers from the audience gathered on Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Plaza waiting to watch Reba perform.
“What a great way to lead up to ‘Country Music’s Biggest Night™’ by announcing our winners on ‘Good Morning America’ and sharing the news with the GMA viewers and the fans here in Nashville,” said Steve Moore, Chief Executive Officer of CMA.
Hosted for the fifth time by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, “The 46th Annual CMA Awards” airs tonight (8:00-11:00 PM/ET) from the Bridgestone Arena on the ABC Television Network.
Winning CMA Musical Event of the Year was Kenny Chesney’s duet with Tim McGraw, “Feel Like A Rock Star.”
Winning CMA Music Video of the Year was Toby Keith and director Michael Salomon for “Red Solo Cup.”
Chesney, who is performing on tonight’s gala, is the reigning CMA Award winner for Music Video of the Year for “You and Tequila” with Grace Potter. He was nominated for three CMA Awards in 2012 including Entertainer of the Year; Musical Event of the Year for “Feel Like A Rock Star” with McGraw; and Music Video of the Year for “Come Over,” directed by Shaun Silva. If Chesney wins Entertainer of the Year, he’ll take the record for the most wins in the category. Chesney is currently tied with Garth Brooks winning the trophy four times in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
McGraw is performing with Faith Hill, Lady Antebellum, and Blake Shelton as part of the Willie Nelson tribute during tonight’s broadcast. He has now received 12 CMA Awards including the 2001 Entertainer of the Year. This marks the second time McGraw has won a CMA Award for a collaboration with Chesney. The two received CMA Vocal Event of the Year Awards for their work on Tracy Lawrence’s “Find Out Who Your Friends Are” (2007).
Keith has received 28 CMA Award nominations in his career, and this marks his third CMA Award win. He was named Male Vocalist of the Year in 2005 and also won Music Video of the Year with Salomon in 2005 for “As Good As I Once Was.” Salomon won Music Video of the Year in 1995 for “Baby Likes To Rock It” with The Tractors.
The winners were announced during the “Good Morning America” broadcast live from Nashville. The program featured musical performances by Reba and an appearance by Paisley announcing the donation of a Chevrolet Traverse to Metro Nashville Public Schools for the new instrument repair facility funded by CMA’s Keep the Music Playing music education campaign.
The two categories announced on “Good Morning America” are normally presented during pre-televised activities and acknowledged during the CMA Awards broadcast, which will happen again this year. Two-time CMA Awards nominee Love and Theft will host pre-tel ceremonies tonight and will present the trophies to the winners as well as Musician of the Year and the CMA Broadcast Awards winners for Radio Station and Personality of the Year. The recipients will be acknowledged during the broadcast and invited to participate in backstage media interviews.
The CMA Awards nominees and winners are determined by the 11,000 industry professional members of CMA, which was formed in 1958 as the first trade organization to promote an individual genre of music. The first “CMA Awards Banquet and Show” was held in 1967. The following year, the CMA Awards was broadcast on NBC television for the first time – making it the longest-running annual music awards program on network television. The Awards aired on NBC through 1971 and on the CBS Television Network from 1972 through 2005 before moving to ABC in 2006. ABC will be the network home of the CMA Awards through 2021.
“The 46th Annual CMA Awards” is a production of the Country Music Association. Robert Deaton is the Executive Producer, Paul Miller is the Director, and David Wild is the writer. The special will be shot in high definition and broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format, with 5.1 channel surround sound. This program carries a TV-PG,D,L parental guideline.
“Good Morning America” is a two-hour, live program anchored by Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos. Josh Elliott is the news anchor, Lara Spencer is lifestyle anchor, and Sam Champion is the weather anchor. The morning news program airs Monday-Friday (7:00-9:00 AM/ET) on the ABC Television Network.

CMA PRESENTS SCOTT BORCHETTA WITH THE JO WALKER-MEADOR AWARD

CMA PRESENTS SCOTT BORCHETTA WITH THE JO WALKER-MEADOR AWARD

NASHVILLE – The Country Music Association presented Scott Borchetta, President and CEO of Big Machine Label Group, with the Jo Walker-Meador Award Wednesday during the Association’s International Media Reception leading up to “The 46th Annual CMA Awards.”
Named for Country Music Hall of Fame member and longtime executive director of CMA – Jo Walker-Meador – the award recognizes outstanding achievement by an individual or company in advocating and supporting Country Music’s marketing development in territories outside the United States. The award was presented by Walker-Meador and Steve Moore, the Chief Executive Officer of CMA.
“It’s truly an amazing honor – and Jo it is great to have you here,” said Borchetta upon receiving the award. “She’s truly a living legend and when you look at her works, in a lifetime of loving this music, there’s probably nobody more important than Jo…And so, I am honored today.”
“Scott is a passionate proponent of Country Music,” said Moore. “He actively and successfully promotes our format across the globe and has raised the international profile of Country Music.”
Borchetta founded Big Machine in 2005. He was an early supporter and has been a consistent advocate of developing international markets for artists on his roster.
For example, Taylor Swift has toured and sold out major venues around the world. She has Platinum selling albums, topping radio and sales charts where Country Music is not traditionally popular in countries such as India.
The Band Perry, on the Republic Nashville imprint, recently visited the UK where they were well received by BBC Radio. The sibling group will be touring in Europe later in the year and their debut album The Band Perry will be released in five territories.
“Scott has a global vision and has opened the door for other Country Music artists,” Moore said. “He is helping to change the perception of Country Music internationally and very deserving of this award.”
Previous recipients of the Jo Walker-Meador Award include:
1994 Trisha Walker-Cunningham, TWI
1995 CMT: Country Music Television
1996 Bob Saporiti, Warner/Reprise Records Nashville
1997 Barry Coburn, Ten Ten Management
1998 Judy Seale, Refugee International
1999 Sarah Brosmer & Kate Farmer, MCA Nashville & Universal International
2000 Jeffrey Stothers, Gone Country Promotions
2001 Iain Snodgrass, Universal Music International, UK
2002 Sheila Hamilton, Canadian Country Music Association, Canada

Kinky Friedman - BiPolar Tour Part 2 - A Fact Finding Mission

Kinky Friedman - BiPolar Tour Part 2 - A Fact Finding Mission
These days, it's good to be Kinky.  As Jesse Dayton's tribute album, Jesse Sings Kinky, picks up steam at Sirius XM radio and ships to Americana radio stations, the Kinkster himself is gearing up to tour more than ever before.  With the second leg of his BiPolar Tour on the books, Kinky is also preparing for trips overseas to Europe and Australia next Spring.  The BiPolar World Tour will support the release of Kinky's new live cd, Live From Woodstock (CLICK HERE to order).  And while the Willie Nelson book, Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die, which he foreworded and shepherded, gets ready to launch on November 13, Kinky is also about to ink a deal for two new books (one marking the return of Kinky the detective, after nearly a decade on hiatus).  All this, while a Russian film crew is shooting principal scenes of a movie based on Kinky's book, Kill Two Birds And Get Stoned. Yep, fun times in the life of Kinky.
