Lonesome River Band to Record Song of the Mountains
Marion, VA- Lonesome River Band will headline the November 3, 2012 Song of the Mountains concert at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia. Also performing on the show will be the Spinney Brothers from Canada, Mac Puckett and the Good Company Band and the Morehead State University “Mountain Music Ambassadors” from Kentucky which is directed by Raymond McLain.
Lonesome River Band is celebrating their 30th Anniversary with three 2012 album releases - CHRONOLOGY Volumes One – Three on Rural Rhythm Records. The band is offering special 3-CD boxed set of the Chronology series available only at their live shows and at their website. Their long career is filled with a multitude of Awards and Recognitions including their 2012 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Award for Instrumental Recorded Event of the Year for their song “Angeline the Baker” from their CHRONOLOGY VOLUME ONE album and Sammy Shelor's fifth win as the 2012 IBMA Banjo Performer of the Year Award.
Born & raised high in the hills of Southwestern Virginia, Mac Puckett started playing and singing bluegrass music at age 10. Mac is highly accomplished and versatile musician who sings all vocal parts as well, plays several acoustic instruments though he concentrates his considerable energy within the band on a distinctly emotional lead singing style and a truly powerhouse rhythm guitar. The legendary Tut Taylor describes Mac as "My Guitar Hero". Mac has performed and recorded with Tut as well as such luminaries as Tom T. Hall, Larry McPeak, Curtis Burch, Beppe Gambetta, Janette Carter (of the legendary Carter Family), Shiloh Mountain Boys, and many more.
From the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, The Spinney Brothers debuted their band in 1992 showcasing a tight brother duet vocal style that immediately was recognized for its energetic and distinctive sound. The Cornerstone of The Spinney Brothers musical identity is the sound of traditional Southern-flavored bluegrass music. The first generation bluegrass legends have been an important influence yet their music is equally shaped by personal lives and local heritage. By incorporating original material, which draws from various sources, The Spinney Brothers effortlessly intertwine the past with the present.
From The Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University, the dynamic “Mountain Music Ambassadors” have represented the Southern Appalachian Region and the mountain culture in concerts at theaters, schools, festivals and other venues regionally, nationally and in such diverse lands as Ireland and The People’s Republic of China. All MSU Traditional Music Ensembles are comprised of students enrolled in band class so members vary from semester to semester.
Tickets for the Saturday, November 3rd concert at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia are $25 reserved. Hello fellow players, This is Bob Hempker with todays newsletter. Lets start this newsletter out with a good old road story. One time, when I was working for Roy Clark, we got a new bus. We immediately left and went on a four week tour. About two days into the tour, we noticed the bathroom was flooding on the floor of the bus. We emptied the holding tank, put a new wax seal on the commode, filled the holding tank back up, but that didnt stop the flooding. We made numerous calls back to the company that Roy had purchased the bus from trying to isolate the problem so we could fix it. Nothing seemed to work. We couldnt go back home because we were committed to do the dates on the tour. As a result we were forced to travel without a functioning bathroom for almost four weeks. We stopped at a Walmart and bought a plastic bucket. We sat it in the bathroom and used that when the need arose. Everybody took a turn at emptying the bucket. Even Roy took his turn. The bucket filled up faster than what youd think it would. When we finally got back to town after all this time, our bus driver took the bus back to where Roy bought it. What they found was totally unbelievable. The carpet layer who had laid the carpet in the bus cut his little scraps off and threw them in the commode. Thats what caused the toilet to stop up. So the point is, working in the entertainment business and traveling on the road is not as glamorous as its made out to be. Whether we like it or not, our personality, mood swings and attitudes come through in our playing. You can play a real aggressive sounding blues solo when youre a little hacked off about something. When were sad and melancholy, our ballad playing seems to excel. When were happy and upbeat, well probably want to play up-tempo tunes that make you want to dance. Conversely, if were sad, its harder to play an up-tempo tune with any real conviction. As a professional you need to be aware of this tendency and not let it affect our playing in a piece that were not quite in the right mood to play. On a familiar note, if youre in a proper mood to play a certain piece, allow your emotions to flow. This can enhance your solo. In normal playing circumstances, we end up playing a cacophony of all different types of songs. We have to do this to hold an audiences attention and to entertain them. We cant just play whatever were in the mood to play song after song. Sometimes one band member may be in a jovial mood while another band member may be going through some personal problems and not be up. We have to jell as a unit and come together and play all the songs with the emotion they are meant to display. Along with the mental aspects of our mood coming out in our playing, it also comes out in our body language and you dont want that to spill over into the rest of the group. You cant allow that to affect the hue or color of our music. As a professional, its our job to sell the music no matter what or how we feel at the particular moment. Going out on the road for extended periods of time can be even more difficult to restrain our moods. Were housed in a tin can rolling down the road for hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles at a time. One person with a real sour attitude or disposition can make daily life really difficult for the others around him. Also whoever rooms with that person when we get hotel rooms, is really put through their own hell. Working the road even when things are at their very best, is extremely hard work. Personality quirks and conflicts are bound to arise. The best we can deal with them on a one to one basic with whoever were having problems with, the better is it on ourselves and everyone else around us. Traveling in such close proximity can bring out both the best and the worst in people. We need to resolve our conflicts as quickly as possible. We dont want the cancerous sore to bleed into the other members of the group. Its hard to go onstage and play when there are personal conflicts going on in the band. We have to remember that were trying to work as a team and leave those differences outside before we enter the venue were playing. If we bring them onstage, it can ruin a show because it subliminally affects everybody. Let us always remember, no matter how difficult it is to put our best playing hat on when we go on the stage, its what we have to do to be a professional. We dont always get hired for our playing ability. Our ability to get along with everybody in the group is a big factor as well. Through the years, I have encountered musicians, some of them top-notch players, who never quite grasped this end of the music playing business and as a result had problems trying to work and never achieved their potential because nobody wanted to work with them. This can be as harmful to ones self as having a drinking or drug problem. The end result is the same. They either get the gig and end up being fired, or they dont get the gig in the first place. Ill quote Bobbe Seymour, The best players dont always get the best gigs. Interview with Jeff Sallee
Jeff Sallee: I would describe myself as a down home country boy from Texas and the type of music that I play is known as Classic Country or Traditional Country.
Lamitschka: How was the last year for you? What were your highlights?
Jeff Sallee: Last year was pretty good I did about 125 dates and started working on a new Gospel Album.
Lamitschka: What is your latest CD and how's it doing?
Jeff Sallee: The lastest CD is called Now That’s Country and its doing very well people really seem to enjoy the combination of Texas and California Honky-Tonk sounds.
Lamitschka: How did you choose the title for the CD? Is there a story behind the name?
Jeff Sallee: (Laughing) no not really a story, I just feel that I record SOLID country music so hence the title.
Lamitschka: Do you write the songs yourself? If not, how do you go about finding the songs for your CD?
Jeff Sallee: 3 of the songs on the CD I wrote and then co-wrote one with a guy named Clinton Erb in Pennslivania, some of the songs were written by different friends and they where kind enough to let me record them.
Lamitschka: Please tell us about the songs on your album (influences, etc).
Jeff Sallee: A lot of the songs were influenced by artists like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard and then others where influenced by people like Faron Young and Mel Tillis
Lamitschka: What is the difference between your last CD and your current one?
Jeff Sallee: more solid country and also the original songs.
Lamitschka: Your current single is being played by radio. What do you feel is special about this song that makes people want to hear it?
Jeff Sallee: hopefully there will be some radio airplay very soon, the thing that makes the album special is that I can relate to how people feel about things in there life.
Lamitschka: What will your next single be?
Jeff Sallee: the next single will be a song called The way I feel.
Lamitschka: What kind of songs do you like to record the most?
Jeff Sallee: Ballads and good ole Texas Two-steps LOL
Lamitschka: You did a duet with Leona Williams. How did that happen to come about?
Jeff Sallee: The duet is on my Gospel Album due out by the first of the year, and it was the old Merle Haggard song When My Last Song is Sung, and I just asked her if she would sing with me and she said that she would love too. It will more that likely be the first single off the album.
Lamitschka: What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what's the story behind it?
Jeff Sallee: I think the song that I wrote for my wife called The way I feel is my favorite, it started out as a poem that I sent her and she accually by accident deleted the poem but I had a backup copy and finally put it to music, Everyone says it is the best song on the CD
Lamitschka: How much creative control do you have over your music?
Jeff Sallee: about 80%
Lamitschka: Do you have any interesting stories about how fans have been affected by your music?
Jeff Sallee: Oh Yes, I was performing one day at a local nursing home and there was a young lady there that had been in a major wreck and she had not spoke since the accident, well that evening, every song that I sang I could see her lips moving and singing the words with me, later that night her dad told me that those were the first words that she had said since the wreck, so I feel my music really touched that young lady.
Lamitschka: Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?
Jeff Sallee: I would have to say my parents have a MAJOR influence and I was singing and playing drums and guitar at a very young age.
Lamitschka: What do you think about today's music industry?
Jeff Sallee: Don’t get me wrong there are alot of things that I like about the industry and some that I dont things I dont like. I think if you can sing a song well and have a good deliverance of that song then everything should work out fine.
Lamitschka: If you had the chance to change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Jeff Sallee: I would do what a lot of artists are doing now and go on radio tours to promote themseleves, I think Im doing one the beginning of the year.
Lamitschka: What was your big break that got you into the music business?
Jeff Sallee: My big break was when I won a talent contest in my hometown in Texas and got to perform in several different locations in Las Vegas and also singing in nashville to 3 tour buses at the Ryman Auditoruim which was setup by a friend of mine there in town.

RIAA Certifies “Blown Away” Platinum For More Than 1 Million Digital Downloads
Nashville, TN – Superstar Carrie Underwood storms the charts this week as her latest single, “Blown Away,” claims the No. 1 spot on both the Billboard and Mediabase country airplay charts giving Carrie her 16th No. 1 single. “Blown Away,” the title-track off Carrie’s latest album was certified Platinum this week by the RIAA becoming her 11th Platinum or Multi-Platinum digital single to sell more than 1 million digital downloads.
The video for “Blown Away” has spent an impressive 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on GAC’s “Top 20 Countdown” show since its debut in August.
