The Gibson Brothers Win “Entertainer of the Year” at the 23rd Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards
Star-filled tribute to Earl Scruggs – featuring Steve Martin and the top musicians in
today’s bluegrass music – caps a night of stellar performances and special moments.
The Gibson Brothers took home the “Entertainer of the Year” Award at the 23rd annual International Bluegrass Music Awards Thursday night, September 27 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Brothers Eric and Leigh Gibson, along with their band (Mike Barber, Clayton Campbell and Joe Walsh) also picked up an award for “Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year” for “Singing As We Rise.”
Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice was another big winner of the night, winning “Album of the Year” (The Heart of a Song) and “Single of the Year“ (“A Far Cry From Lester & Earl”). Russell Moore (of Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out) and Dale Ann Bradley were male and female vocalists of the year, respectively, and Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers were the recipients of the prestigious Emerging Artist award. A full listing of all this year’s winners and award recipients appears below.
Doyle Lawson and the late Ralph Rinzler were the 2012 Hall of Fame inductees.
As always, some of the best musicians in bluegrass delivered a night filled with amazing performances. Hosts Del McCoury and Laurie Lewis joined an ensemble called “the Masters of Bluegrass” -- J.D. Crowe, Bobby Hicks, Jerry McCoury and Bobby Osborne -- to get the show off to a rousing start.
Other standout performances included Dailey & Vincent’s stirring a cappella rendition of “When The Roll is Called Up Yonder,” which brought the audience to its feet; Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen’s bluegrass interpretation of The Box Tops’ classic “The Letter;” and Hall of Fame inductee Doyle Lawson’s performance, with his band Quicksilver, of “Dixie Home.”
A stunning all-star finale, led by last year’s “Entertainer of the Year” recipient Steve Martin, filled the Ryman stage with some of bluegrass music’s top banjo players and musicians, in a tribute to late banjo legend Earl Scruggs, who died earlier this year. Participants in the Scruggs tribute included Tom Adams, Eddie Adcock, Jessie Baker, Terry Baucom, Sam Bush, Kristin Scott Benson, Alison Brown, Jason Burleson, Greg Cahill, Jason Carter, J.D.Crowe, Jason Davis, Joe Dean, Steve Dilling, Glenn Gibson, Eric Gibson, Mark Johnson, Doyle Lawson, Laurie Lewis, Del McCoury, Rob McCoury, Lynn Morris, Joe Mullins, Mike Munford, Chris Pandolfi, Graham Sharp, Sammy Shelor, Sleepy Man Banjo Boys (Jonny, Robbie & Tommy Mizzone), Ron Stewart, Mike Sumner, Tony Trischka, Scott Vestal, Pete Wernick, and Roland White.

Songwriter Round At Legendary Bluebird Cafe

Songwriter Round At Legendary Bluebird Cafe presents Jane Bach, Sandra Piller, Kati Mac, and Billy Lee

A country music tradition, the songwriter round is taken to new heights at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and coming on Saturday, October 6, songwriters from California, New York, and Nashville join for "Jane Bach and Friends" at the legendary venue.

"This will be a fun evening featuring songs that were hits and some that might soon become hits," Bach states. Bach is the writer of "The Last One to Know," a number one hit for Reba McEntire, and also composed hits for Jo Dee Messina, Ray Price, and others.

Frequently performing at writer's rounds in cities from coast to coast, Bach will serve as host as well as one of the evening's singers. "A writer's round is not only good fun," says Bach, "it's also one of the best ways for an audience to get up close and personal with writers and their songs."

Performing with Bach will be Shady Hill Records (www.shadyhillrecords.com) artist Sandra Piller, who is also a big supporter of the writer's round format. "These evenings are always full of so many good feelings as writers share their work from the past and present," says Piller, who will select numbers from her most recent album, "Days Like These," as well as from her new 6-song EP, "Love Goes On," dedicated to her late husband, Michael Piller, writer-producer of "Star Trek DS9" and "Star Trek Voyager."

On stage with Piller and Bach will be Kati Mac and Billy Lee. Mac is the Emmy-nominated NYC singer-songwriter whose song, "Only Love," was the theme for the daytime drama, "Guiding Light." "Even if you haven't heard one of my songs, you've heard me singing on numerous commercial jingles," Mac points out. In addition, she has toured or recorded with Sting, Meat Loaf, and Nona Hendryx. Billy Lee will be singing some of his songs, including "The One," which became a Top Five hit for Gary Allan.

The classic format of the round, which is well-known to Nashville audiences, features all songwriters on stage. One plays a song, followed by the next writer, and the next, and so on. It encourages interaction between writers as well as the audience and "It results in a good time for all," Bach notes.

The Bluebird Cafe has a rich history of hosting many of Nashville's finest songwriters. "Everybody in country music knows about the Bluebird," states Piller. "Probably everyone in the music business knows, too," adds Bach.

Showtime for the "Jane Bach and Friends" event is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, and reservations are recommended. The Bluebird Cafe is located at 4104 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, TN 37215. Phone is (615) 383-1461.

Head Solo Pup With Reba

» Head Solo Pup? With Reba officially stepping down from her co-host duties on the Academy of Country Music Awards, the question becomes whether Blake Shelton will have a new partner or fly solo. "Reba has hosted the ACM Awards a record 14 times since 1986, and we fully understand and support her decision to focus her energies on her new television project," ACM CEO Bob Romeo says. "We've known about this for a while and have something very special planned with Blake returning – he’s got something big up his sleeve that we’ll be announcing soon. Stay tuned!"
