ACCLAIMED SINGER-SONGWRITER DERIC RUTTAN NOMINATED FOR TWO
2012 CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS
Toronto, ON - Announced yesterday morning at the 2012 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) press conference, Nashville-based artist Deric Ruttan has received two nominations for Songwriter of the Year. Ruttan is being recognized for his current single, "Main Street, 1979,"and also as a co-writer for "They Don't Make Em' Like That Anymore" performed by Jason Blaine. The 2011 JUNO Award nominee will also perform live at the awards show on Sunday, September 9 in Saskatoon, SK.
"I'm humbled to receive not one but two nominations for Songwriter of the Year for two songs whose stories are very personal to the writers," says Deric Ruttan. "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore" is a special song for my buddy Jason Blaine, with a deep personal connection. "Main Street, 1979" is the most autobiographical song I've written to date. I'm equally proud of both of these songs. My sincere thanks to the CCMA for the nominations. See you in Saskatoon!"
Ruttan's nominated single, one of three new track's from his 2011 release, Up All Night - Deric Ruttan Live, debuted at #35 on the Canadian Country BDS chart and was the most-added country single (Canadian or American) the week of release. The accompanying video is currently #10 on CMT Canada and the single recently broke Top 20 on all three of Canada's country music charts.
Last year, Ruttan earned multiple CCMA Award nominations including Male Artist of the Year, CMT Video of the Year, Single of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. Additionally, his independent record label Black T Records was nominated for Record Label of the Year. Earlier in 2011, Ruttan was nominated for a JUNO Award for his self-produced album Sunshine (2010). His 2008 album, First Time In A Long Time, co-produced with Grammy-nominated producer / songwriter Brett Beavers (Dierks Bentley, Tim McGraw, Brooks & Dunn), won him a 2009 SOCAN Country Music Award and four 2008 CCMA Award nominations.
In addition to his career as a performer, Ruttan has had over three-dozen of his songs recorded by other artists including Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley, Gary Alan, Terri Clark and Aaron Pritchett. In 2009, Capital Nashville's Eric Church took the Ruttan co-write, "Hell On The Heart," to #8 on the US Mediabase charts. Additionally in 2003, he collaborated with Brett Beavers on the Dierks Bentley hit "What Was I Thinkin'" which was a #1 Billboard chart-topper, as well as Bentley's Top 5 Billboard hit "Lot of Leavin' Left To Do."

In just four years on the road, Tim McKay has already established himself as one of the leading artists on the UK and Europe Country scene to date. With tremendous sales on his last album, a wealth of contacts in Europe and Nashville, and an invitation to appear on the Wembley International Festival of Country Music, Tim McKay looks set to become the worlds first ever country music superstar from the UK. Tim’s interest in Country Music grew out of attending smaller country gigs in Britain, as well as his training in Arts.
‘’I would attend some of my local country clubs. I got into it through going along and watching some of the artists perform, never dreaming that four years down the line it’s something that I’d be doing myself on this scale.”
After gigging in his local country clubs for a period of time, Tim released his first album, ‘Anything Goes’.
‘‘Anything Goes’’ was a complete cover album of country hits that I’d be singing in my live show on a nightly basis. For my first album, I wanted something that I could get out there to get myself known. Looking back I also think it’s important as a new artist to get your voice on a CD so that you can hear what you sound like. That helped me establish early on where I wanted to be as an artist. Some artists have a different sound on record than when they go out to perform live. So my first album was really just one big learning curve for me. The album actually did really well in Europe, in places like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway as well as up and down the UK.”
Tim’s most recent release, ‘Chasing Dreams’ has followed suit in the success of the previous one.
“The new album is entirely made up of original material. I felt this was the right time to produce and release a full album of original modern day country music. I had been singing covers for the last 3years so I was ready to put out an album made up of songs that the public had never heard before. My representatives in Europe and Nashville are all really happy with it, and we’ve sold a huge amount of albums so far.”
Tim was given a massive opportunity to play a major festival, not in the UK but Nashville in 2010 when he was picked as the UK representative at the CMA Fest.
‘’In June 2010, I was selected to represent the UK during the CMA fest in Nashville. I played on the Global party stage which is the official kick start to the week’s festival. It was really an honor and a privilege to represent British Country Music over there, and of course it opened a lot of doors and contacts over there for me.
Asked who his own influence was in the music business, Tim replied:
“It’s a difficult question to say who my influence is as I have so many. I’d listen to a wide variety of music which includes people like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson but I soon figured that no music makes that connection with me like Country does.
My influences in the country world are people like Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum and Garth Brooks. I have an appreciation for the older traditional sound of Country too, because that’s where it all came from, but it’s certainly the modern country that I really like and aspire to be a part of.”
Reflecting on the UK Country scene as an up-and-coming star, Tim shows optimism in the number of young people coming through as fans of country music.
“There is definitely a market in the UK for country music. I have already seen a massive change just in my four years of touring. For example a few years ago a Nashville star would come to the UK and they would sell out a 3,000-4,000 seat theatre in London for one night and then move on. Now they are coming over, playing other cities in the UK and also selling out 12-15,000 seated venues like the O2 and Wembley arenas. For that to change in just a matter of two or three years proves to me that there is a bigger demand for these artists and country music in general. The average age of a country music audience member is also rapidly decreasing. I went to see Lady Antebellum play in
London a short while ago, and the amount of young people there was amazing. You know my age, 21/22.’’
Another big opportunity came in Tim’s direction earlier this month when he was added to the Wembley International Festival of Country Music, as the UK Breakthrough artist.
“Being a part of the Wembley festival means the world to me, not only because of the festival but also because it’s a thrill to play live in such an iconic venue like Wembley. So many stars have performed on that stage and it’s really humbling for me to join that list of artists. Also of course not forgetting the honor it is going to be for me to share the stage with such legendary performers such as Reba, Lonestar and Ricky Skaggs with more to be added I believe. It’s going to be one hell of an experience and a big opportunity for me and one that I will cherish for life. It’s so great to finally see country music shining through.”
Winning a cluster of 47 awards so far including ‘Best Male Vocalist, Entertainer of the year and Best International touring artist in Europe 2010. Tim has an awards case to be proud of. He has opened up for Marty Stuart on one of his UK tour dates, represented the UK in Nashville, representing the UK at Wembley and other high profile shows scheduled in for 2012.

Hello fellow players, As most of you know by now, we have lost the Queen of Country Music and I dont mean Bill Anderson. God love Kitty Wells. I miss her as we all here in Nashville do, but somehow I feel the greatness of this star will never be truly gone. When I think of her, I think of listening to her on the jukebox when I was in the Air Force. Stu Basore and I used to go into town and stop at drive-in restaurants and divide our money between hearing Kitty on the jukebox and pecan pie and ice cream. I think about all the great steel players that have worked for her. Shot Jackson was the player on so many of her hits. When I moved to Nashville, Stu Basore was a year or so ahead of me and he got the Kitty Wells job as soon as the position opened up. This thrilled me tremendously as I was a great fan of one and friend of the other. Not long after I moved to Nashville to try to find my fame and fortune, Russ Hicks went to work with Kitty. Soon afterward, Jimmy Crawford to the position. He was one of several of the great players that held the reigns in that steel guitar playing job. Kitty was one of the rare people in Nashville that I have never worked for myself, but everyone that ever worked for her, all the way up to George Edwards, was a great friend. Im relishing some of the shorts that theyre showing on television of Kitty and Stu playing his little Fender 1200 with Howard White standing behind him on his Sho-Bud number four guitar. Ill always miss having missed the chance to work with Kitty. Its a hole in my career I wish I could go back and fill. I really loved the purity of her country music. Since all her steel players were very close friends of mine, I learned much about the inner workings of the Kitty Wells road show. There was nothing pretentious about Kitty or her friendship. Im going to turn the rest of this newsletter over to Bob Hempker. Its all yours Bob. Anybody who has even the slightest bit of interest in country music knows who Kitty Wells is. Every aspiring female country western singer, in my opinion, should spend some time listening to Kitty Wells recordings and studying them. She is the true queen of country music. I remember Loretta Lynns very first album on the Zero Label she recorded in Washington State. She sounded somewhat like Kitty Wells. You could distinctly hear the Kitty Wells influence in her voice. When I was a kid growing up in Lima, Ohio, Kitty Wells, Johnny and Jack and Jerry Byrd were performing one of their road dates in my hometown. My guitar teacher, Ron Dearth, took me backstage after the show. I was twelve years old and I met Don Helms, Jerry Byrd and Shot Jackson all in one night. I met the whole cast of the show, but it was the steel players I really wanted to meet. Needless to say, I was on cloud nine. Ten years or so later when I got the job with Loretta, I learned that she had the utmost admiration and respect for Kitty Wells. Loretta still today corrects people if they refer to her as the queen of country music and tells them Kitty Wells is the queen of country music. Thats how deep her respect and admiration goes. Both of these ladies are majestic icons of country music. Ive had the privilege of meeting one and working and being close friends with the other as Loretta feels like a sister to me.
