Grand Ole Opry to Celebrate ’100 Priceless Years’ of Iconic Comedienne Minnie Pearl

The Grand Ole Opry is poised to celebrate the life and legacy of one of its most iconic members ever, Minnie Pearl, leading up to the 100th anniversary of the comedienne’s birth. Celebrations of the performer’s humor and more than 50-year Opry career begin this week and will culminate with an Opry show in her honor on Tues., Oct. 23.
Sarah Ophelia Colley was born in Centerville, TN on October 25, 1912 and became Mrs. Henry Cannon in 1947. She first appeared as the now-iconic Minnie Pearl in 1938. An executive from 650 AM-WSM saw her perform in 1940 and extended an invitation to her to appear on the Grand Ole Opry. Minnie went on to entertain generations of fans from the Opry stage as well as on television and stages around the world, joyfully shouting, “How-dee! I’m jes’ so proud to be here!” and regaling audiences with tales from the character’s fictional hometown, Grinder’s Switch, Tennessee.

„I Won’t Take Less Than Your Love“, „Trains Make Me Lonesome“, „On The Other Hand“, „Diggin‘ Up Bones“ oder „When You Say Nothin‘ At All“. Einige seiner eigenen Hits „Sowin‘ Love“, „Seein‘ My Father In Me“ u.a. fehlten auch nicht im Programm. Siegfried Schneeweiss

Steel Guitar News July 02. 2012

Hello fellow players, I’ve been thinking about all the people that have helped my career over the years. These are people I need to acknowledge and thank for hiring me. I have touched on many of them in the past. Starting at the beginning, I would like to mention Claude Gray. Claude was a neighbor of mine in north Nashville. This is a guy that I thank profusely for saying good things about me which is what really got my career lit and got me noticed by other artists. Of course, I thank Jean Shepard for using me on some of her first recording sessions. Then there’s Ray Price. I thank him very much for being the kind of person that he was to me. Several of the artists that I worked with at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas really gave my career a boost such as David Rogers. I thank Pete Drake for lining me up with him. I got a lot of recording session work from my association with David. One artist that stands out to me is Billy Walker. He was the most appreciated star most of us have ever worked with. I was probably appreciated most of all by Pat Boone. Lynn Anderson was very important along with Ferlin Husky. I thank all of them for the opportunities they gave me. Another standout artist is Johnny Paycheck. Paycheck did a lot for me by encouraging me to be a showman and a show-off. The offshoot of this was that in between shows, the audience wouldn’t just come back and ask me to get Johnny’s autograph for them, but they actually wanted my autograph for being the nut that I was onstage. Stan Hitchcock has been very good to me through the years. Because of working with Stan and Bobby Goldsboro and having to learn their arrangements, I came to appreciate their music. Working where I had to back up several different artists on television shows, I had to learn a lot of new arrangements very quickly. The challenge of continually working on new arrangements was very good for me and catapulted my development as a player to a much higher level. Tanya Tucker was very open and easy to get along with and I had no problems learning her arrangements and appreciating what all she did. Artists I worked with on the west coast which include Dolly Parton, Bobby Goldsboro, Buck Owens, Linda Ronstadt, Emmy Lou Harris and subbing for Bob Hempker with Loretta Lynn deserve my thanks. Faron Young, George Jones and several other of the crazy men in the business. I learned very nice things from all of them and the experiences I had with them are responsible for my evolution as a player. If you want to become the very best player that you can be, then don’t ever turn down a chance to play with anybody because you never know what you’ll learn from the experience. Again, I thank all the artists I worked with for making me the person I am today. Check out our monthly specials at and we’ll try to save you a lot of money.

Disc 1:
„Redbud Tree“
„Haul Away“
„Don’t Forget Your Hat“
„Miss You Blues“
„Corned Beef City“
„Go, Love“

Anita, Iowa....."Time for the annual checkup at the Veterans Hospital."  Bob & Sheila Everhart stay so busy with their music, they sometimes have to make special trips to Omaha for an annual checkup for Bob.  "I kind of like the Vet's Hospital," Bob said, because I'm a vet for one thing, but also because I have a very good doctor there.  After we got done with all the preliminaries, we went to the Whole Foods grocery store to get some fresh produce, which is always good.  We also had lunch, using their buffet, and I thought sure we would have a 'budget' lunch, but it didn't turn out that way, soft drinks are just too high.  Sheila more than made up for it the next day on our back porch.  Here's what she did.  She bought a really nice t-bone steak at the Walmart.  She waits until they are on sale, so that only cost $8.  Charbroiled on the backporch, just the right amount for three of us.  Then she went to our little grocery store in Anita, who had some really large mushrooms at a really low price, another $2.  Add to that some onions she already had, probably fifty cents worth, and some cajun style rice, another $2, and you have a very nice meal for $12, way below our 'budget' objective.  So, she broke out a bottle of Berringers wine $4 and Bobbie Lhea had a coke, and it still only $18.50, well within the limits.  We had a super good dinner."
"Dad took us to the movies on Tuesday night," Bobbie Lhea added, "it's free popcorn night on Tuesdays you know.  Dad even liked the film "Brave" about a red-headed animated Scottish princess who was being forced to marry someone she didn't like.  We all thought it was a great animated Disney film, Dad even liked it.  He said they've finally figured out how to draw hair."
"We're getting ready for the big July 6th show at the Oak Tree," Sheila added.  "Bob seems to be in good health, but sometimes I wonder, the way he moans and groans.  Maybe he does that just to get out of a little work.  He's looking forward to the 'Tribute to the Stars' show he worked up.  Jackie Shewey singing Patsy Cline and Sean Benz singing Johnny Cash, gosh that's got to be good.  But first we're going to spend the 4th of July with the Lund Family at the Lund Seed Company's annual get together.  That will be tons of fun."
