Joey + Rory Choose Honesty as a Success Strategy

Joey + Rory Choose Honesty as a Success Strategy
By Randy Rudder
© 2012 CMA Close Up® News Service / Country Music Association®, Inc.
One morning at Marcy Jo’s Mealhouse, the meat-and-three restaurant owned by Rory Feek's wife Joey Martin and Rory’s sister Marcy Gary in unincorporated Pottsville, Tenn., Joey was running late because she was trying to rescue a neighbor’s calf who had wandered onto their farm.
“I saw Joey go out this morning, and I came outside about 15 minutes later and I couldn’t see her anywhere. Then way over the ridge, I see her head pop up every few seconds and she was stripping,” Rory said, with a laugh. “When I went out to see what was going on, she was there with her jacket wrapped around a 6-hour-old baby calf that was freezing, trying to warm it up. So I tweeted about it this morning. I wrote, ‘My wife: the artist and cow whisperer. Another reason I love her.’”
Rory is, of course, known for his trademark blue bib overalls and blond pompadour. He owns a ’52 Oldsmobile and loves Country Music. When Joey is not on the road with him, she helps Marcy cook and serve fried chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans and chocolate Coca-Cola cakes at the Mealhouse, a onetime 19th-century general store that had been used as a seasonal fruit stand until it was abandoned. After the trio purchased it, Joey and Rory did most of the renovations to it as well as to the home that sits on their 8-acre farm, where they raise Rory’s bull, Shooter. Every June, the Feeks host more than a thousand of their closest friends and fans at their annual ”Bib and Buckle Fest,” with barbecue and music in their own backyard. Seriously, can you get any more Country than that?
Embracing who they are was central to establishing them as one of Country Music’s top new vocal duos during Season One of CMT’s “Can You Duet.” “The PR and label people that we work with are fine with it, but Nashville, in particular the music business, has worked very hard over the past couple of decades to distance itself from the ‘Hee Haw’ stereotype,” Feek said. “Some people are actually a little embarrassed by our heritage, and overalls reinforce that image they are trying to shed. They want to shed the Country image from Country Music, and apparently I cause some problems with that. But I wore these for years before I started performing, so it wasn’t like I was just trying to create something that wasn’t me.”
“Rory has a very unique look — and I don’t just say that because I cut his hair,” Martin said, smiling. “I think it’s a timeless look. It’s just his persona and his profile. Even when you take him out of the overalls, he still has an image. We were in California one time and somebody came over to the table where we were sitting. This guy had a surfboard in his hand and he said, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m a huge fan of your songwriting. I love what you guys do.”
“After ‘Can You Duet’ was over, it wasn’t long before we would be walking down the street, and somebody would pass us and then turn around and drive all the way back to talk to us because they recognized us from a block away,” he added. “That’s when we realized that, wow, maybe they’re right. This thing might be a pretty strong branding thing visually, even though it wasn’t something we consciously planned. And Joey is usually dressed like a cowgirl, so those two elements have worked well together. We have made all of our music videos at our home too, or at the restaurant and around our lives, using nothing but the people in our lives — no actors and no sets. That has helped us to keep it authentic.”
“A lot of very talented artists who come to town don’t have a very definable image, whether it’s through their music or the way they look or the way they dress,” said Joey + Rory’s publicist, Craig Campbell, President, Campbell Entertainment Group. “So you try to dig into who they are, their background or hobbies — something that can give you a little direction to go. It’s got to be something that is already there that you build on. It can’t be just fabricated out of nothing or fans will be able to tell.”
“Country Music is a great big world,” Feek concluded. “Instead of having to market to the fringe all the time to make it extremely hip and cool, we can also spend a lot of our efforts marketing to people right here in Middle America. Those people matter too. They don’t live on the coasts, but it’s a huge segment of our audience, and those people are not embarrassed by our heritage. I know the industry people are just trying to appeal to a broader audience, but we can’t please everybody. If we are not careful, we can end up losing our core audience by trying to be all things to all people.”

Hank Williams, Jr.’s New Album “Old School, New Rules” set for July 10th release

Hank Williams, Jr.’s New Album “Old School, New Rules”
set for July 10th release

New single “That Ain’t Good” going to radio

Duet tracks with Brad Paisley & Merle Haggard highlights of album
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 22, 2012) – Blaster Records, in association with Warner Music Nashville, announces the details of the upcoming Hank Williams, Jr. album set for release on July 10, 2012.  The twelve-song package, available for pre-sale now at www.hankjr.com, will include a duet with Brad Paisley on “I’m Gonna Get Drunk And Play Hank Williams” as well as a new duet with the legendary Merle Haggard on his classic “I Think I’ll Just Sit Here and Drink.” Williams’ first single in several years, “That Ain’t Good”, has just been shipped to radio with a companion video being produced in coming weeks.

“I’m excited about this new album,” Hank said.  “I’m definitely ‘Old School’, and I am making music with ‘New Rules’.  People know I’m gonna say exactly what I think and this album is exactly that.”

“Old School, New Rules” is the first album on Hank Williams, Jr.’s new label imprint, Bocephus Records, with a licensing deal with Blaster Records under a Warner Music Nashville distribution deal.

With more than 70 albums to his credit, sales of 55 million records, countless awards including 5-time Entertainer of the Year awards (ACM & CMA), BMI Icon Award, a Grammy, and most recently in 2009 the Academy of Country Music “Pioneer Award,” Williams is a living legend. His discography chronicles a bold profile of growth from adored offspring of a legendary father, to titan of the modern country rock movement in his own right. For two decades, America came to its collective feet each fall Monday night when this larger than life superman of a musician looked into the camera and unleashed the national anthem for viewers of Monday Night Football – ‘Are You Ready for Some Football?’ Those simple words have won Williams an entirely new generation of fans and given him the distinction of being the first country performer to ever win an Emmy.

Nashville, TN (May 21, 2012) -- Award-winning Bluegrass brother/sister duo THE ROYS host 650 AM WSM Radio's Guest Artist Series tomorrow from 2 - 3 p.m. The show, unique to radio, gives the guest artists a chance to play some of their own hits, along with some of their all-time favorite tracks by other entertainers. Listeners will hear "stories behind the songs" and what makes certain records meaningful to the hosts. With their current single, Trailblazer, moving to the #4 spot on June's Power Source Bluegrass Top 35 Chart, it is obvious that Lee and Elaine know a good song when they hear one. Listeners can expect a broad range of genres and an eclectic mix of artists from these "temporary" deejays.

"We believe it all begins with a song," notes Lee Roy. "So for us, this is a really cool format for a show." For Elaine Roy, the opportunity is one they've worked hard to fit into their busy schedule of touring, TV appearances and recording. "We've wanted to do this show for a very long time," she says. "The stars finally lined up for us, and we plan to make the most of it."

The duo's upcoming schedule is jam-packed; CMA Music Festival week will find them riding in the event's opening day Parade and performing songs from their current CD, LONESOME WHISTLE, on the Chevy Acoustic, Durango Acoustic Corner and Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau stages. THE ROYS will also entertain fans and sign autographs at one of their favorite venues, the world-famous Ernest Tubb Record Shop in downtown Nashville.

For Joe Limardi, 650 AM WSM's Operations Manager, THE ROYS bring a special spark to all their engagements. "I'm looking forward to the chemistry that Elaine and Lee have on stage to come through the speakers during their upcoming guest hour," he states. "Better not blink, it'll go quickly and most definitely be fun!" THE ROYS will return for a second Guest Artist Series appearance on Tuesday, June 26.

Fans can listen to both shows online at 650 AM WSM and can catch up with Lee and Elaine on www.theroysonline.com.

Rootsy rock band's new album features guest appearance from Delbert McClinton

Album currently streaming on AOL Music.
Orbo & The Longshots Album CoverNorwegian Grammy winners ORBO and the Longshots are ready to make their mark on America with their debut U.S. release, Prairie Sun. The album has garnered advance praise from the music press as well as from radio programmers, who have taken to songs like "Magic" and "Highway Tears." Prairie Sun is currently streaming on AOL Music.

"Highway Tears" | Video (approved for posting)

Prairie Sun was recorded in Cotati, California at Prairie Sun Studios, which has hosted artists such as Paul McCartney, Neko Case, and Tom Waits, provided the perfect mix of vintage gear and a rural setting that added to the organic feel of the new record. The band was so pleased with their experience there that they named both a song-and then the entire album-after the studio. The record was produced by ORBO and Erick Jaskowiak (Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley and Del McCoury) and features special guests Delbert McClinton, Fats Kaplan (Buddy Miller, Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks) and John Jorgenson (Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Earl Scruggs).
Says ORBO, "We play rock 'n' roll with a rootsy American twist-some gospel, some country, blues and more-and this time out, we found a way to blend the way we sound live and the way we sound in the studio on one album."

Advance press reviews for Prairie Sun have been stellar, with Chuck Dauphin of Nashville's Music City News calling ORBO and the Longshots"One of the best international acts I have heard in a long, long time!" and OA.NO in Norway proclaiming that "Prairie Sun is rock solid and magnificent...A shining masterpiece."

The quintet takes its names from the initials of the group's charismatic founder, guitarist and frontman, Ole Reinert Berg-Olsen, and he is joined by Longshots Ine Tumyr (vocals, percussion), Reidar Opdal (piano, vocals) Paul Inge Vikingstad (bass) and Stian Tumyr (drums).
A late summer/early fall tour will be announced soon.
