Alan Jackson's wife Denise may take Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" to heart, but she also stands on her own as a best-selling author, mom of three andcancer survivor. So today, Mother's Day, is a particularly special day in the Jackson home, as Alan and his three daughters celebrate the tenacious head of their household. Denise's first book, It's All About Him: Finding the Love of My Life details the ups and downs of her relationship with her husband of more than 33 years. It debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times best-sellers list. "It's been great for [my daughters] to see her do something out there that's not typical for a parent at all," says Alan. "But she's a great role model for them anyway and always has been, whether she did anything professionally or not. I could see it in their eyes that they were surprised -- very surprised, and I could see them with interest looking at her, thinking it was special for her to do that. It was a very good thing for the kids to see that."

"We all know and remember how important coal is," explained Wendy Williams of the trio. "But sometimes we forget that the people who mine that coal are much more important. We need to remember and thank both those who have lost their lives and those still out there everyday continuing to mine."

Hello fellow players, Well Ive had hundreds of emails asking me to finish the Don Helms story about he and his last days with Hank Williams Sr. I asked him, Were you in the car when Hank died Don? He replied, No, me and three other members of the band were on the way to a gig in West Virginia and had stopped to eat in a restaurant on the way from Alabama when word came over the radio that Hank had died. I said, What happened then Don? Don said he decided to go straight back to Nashville to try to find another job. The rest of the band went with him and immediately started looking. They had many offers by the time they had gotten back. As soon as Don went to the funeral, he started a job with Ray Price. This is back in the day when Ray sounded very much like Hank Sr. himself. Later on, Ray became infatuated with the styles of Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and so on and left the original Hank Sr. sound that he had started with. This was back when stars were paying about $15 a day for road players. I asked Don during this little mini interview how this affected the bands livelihood. He replied that they were all very sorry about Hanks death and that it affected them financially very deeply. Don had just bought a nice house in Hendersonville and was not sure how he was going to pay for it. However, it must have not been too big a worry because it was as nice a house as there was in Hendersonville at that time and it was the house that he raised his kids and kept until the day he died. His widow Hazel is still there today. The band had Jerry Rivers as the fiddle player and Pete Wade as the guitar player for awhile and all these boys stayed very close friends after Hanks death, even buying houses near each other in Hendersonville on Riverside Drive. Marvin Rainwater played bass. Sammy Pruitt played guitar at some point. Its just hard to remember everybody at this point. Im sure you can find more information on the internet. Information youre getting from me is information that Ive gotten direct from Don from talking to him here in my store during his many visits. Somebody asked me if Hank ever traveled by bus or had his own bus. I never remember hearing Don say anything about them ever having a bus so I dont think they did, however in those days, 1950-1953, everyone traveled by car or car and trailer, even to the point of putting the big bass inside the four door sedan. Pretty interesting and tight fit, but remember these guys werent making very much money and transportation of any kind was expensive. With the musicians making $15-25. a week and stars seldom making over $250 a week, it was hard for anyone to get rich. Dons story about flat tires on the cars in those days was pretty interesting. He said it was hard to drive around the block without having a flat. Heck, I can remember that myself. Steel belted radials were a thing that was coming up in the future. Don said, At least the Cadillac had air conditioning and power steering which was very rare for any car in those times. Even the places they played didnt have air conditioning. Don did write an autobiography before he died called Settin The Woods On Fire that you can buy from his widow Hazel. After hearing Don play pedal steel guitar and remembering the old days, I grabbed him and sat him down in my store one day when he brought his pedal guitar in for some major work. I said, Don, you sounded much, much better on the non-pedal guitar. Why dont you get rid of the pedal guitar and go back to playing the way everybody loves your playing of the past. I promise you Don, if youll throw that pedal guitar away, pull out your old non-pedal Gibson, youll make a lot of people happier, including your banker. He said, Well Ill tell you what Ill do just for you. I have a guy that Im going out this weekend with named Mike Church and I think he would like me playing non-pedal better than pedal anyway. Ill try it and let you know when I get back in town Monday. Don came in town with his pedal guitar and said, Ill never want to play it again. You were totally right. Everybody loves my Gibson with no pedals. So thats the way the rest of Dons career went. Check out our monthly specials at http://www.steelguitar.net/monthlyspecials.html and well try to save you a lot of money. Carrie Hassler's THE DISTANCE Debuts On
Top 10 Bluegrass Album Chart
Top 10 Bluegrass Album Chart
Nashville, TN (May 14, 2012) Rural Rhythm Records is very proud to announce CARRIE HASSLER debuts at #10 this week on Billboard Magazine's Bluegrass Album Chart with her new release, THE DISTANCE. “This set finds Hassler turning in a heartfelt vocal performance that puts her vocal and interpretative skills front and center with her claiming that real estate like a super pro that never has to look back. The kind of Nashville album that fans have been clamoring for and complaining just isn’t made any more, this is proof that mainstream doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Simply a super country album throughout,” says Midwest Record Reviews.
Numerous tracks are hits with both Radio and Media alike. The title cut, “The Distance” (written by Ashley McBryde) debuted last week on the U.K. Hot Disc Country Radio Airplay Chart with “Luxury Liner” (written by Gram Parsons) making its debut at #15 on the Bluegrass Today Weekly Airplay Chart (5/4). “Carrie Hassler’s 'Luxury Liner' carried me away. Super tempo, superb vocals, and top of the line pickin’ plus a nod to Emmylou’s version. Gram would’ve loved it,” raved Barry Tashian (Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band).
Music News Nashville has their favorite saying, “Maybe the gem of the collection is the stunning 'Catch My Breath', which sounds like something that could be straight from the pages of Connie Smith a la 1967. Hassler has been paying her dues and growing as an artist for a long time now, and with THE DISTANCE, I think it’s obvious she’s ready for that next step!” “Catch My Breath” was written by Bobby K. Boyd (Hassler’s cousin) and Dale Roberson.
THE DISTANCE also includes the award-winning talents of: Tim Stafford (guitar); Ron Stewart (banjo); Justin Moses (fiddle); Alan Bibey (mandolin); Mark Fain (bass); Mark Laws (Percussion); Dale Ann Bradley (harmony vocals), and the album’s producer Steve Gulley (harmony vocals).

ON THE ROAD WITH IOWAN'S BOB & SHEILA EVERHART
Hampton, Iowa....."We just finished our trip to participate in the "Hampton's Old Time Music Festival." Bob & Sheila were booked on this event some time ago, and though they've been on it many times, this year was special according to Sheila. "Gladys Strein, who makes her home in California, is the mover and shaker behind this very nice rural music gathering. She manages to keep the program old-timey and fun, and drew an extraordinary crowd this year, especially during the Saturday matinee. It was on this particular show that we got to hear an extraordinary twin-fiddle presentation with Jay Kelly from Atkinson, Nebr., and Becky Gors from Waverly, Iowa. They had never played together before, but they presented a twin-fiddle version of "Faded Love" which was a real treat for those of us who like our country music, 'country.' Another special guest was Jack Ferguson from Boone, Iowa. Jack was on Bob's PBS television show "Old Time Country Music" as well as his nephew Randy Kohrs, who produced and recorded Jack's new CD "Shackles and Chains." Wow, Jack is a tremendous Dobro player, and he taught Randy Kohrs, who now plays for Dolly Parton. Both Jack and Jay were there to work with Dale Eichor and Bobby Awe (as was John Dutwiler from Burlington, Iowa). So you know this was an incredibly good country music performance."
"I was totally impressed with the Hampton show this year," Bob added. "Gladys had Terry Smith as a headliner, and he attracted a large audience. Bobby Awe and Dale Eichor with their special guests, plus Cedar Valley Bluegrass (the band that Becky Gors plays in), Highway 52, Curt King & Band, and Bob & Sheila. We always have a good time telling a few jokes and playing the old-time songs. One guy came up to me later and said he really appreciated what he called 'casual comedy.' I suspect he's right, I'm not a comedian, and when I tell stories, it's usually about someone I know. I also really enjoyed Cedar Valley when they were on, as they sang "Just Look At Old Glory" a song written by our mutual friend Jackie Shewey. Cedar Valley learned it from Howard Ness's sister, and they did it just fine."
"Well, we got to go see my favorite movie," Bobbie Lhea, the Everhart's daughter chimed in, "The Avengers was playing during free popcorn night at the Atlantic theater last Tuesday, so dad took us. He also took us to Greenfield to the Olive Branch restaurant that serves really really good lamb gyros, which is a great Greek food. Thursday nights are their Greek nights. And of course Sunday is Mother's Day so we stopped in Des Moines at Joe's Crab Shack for lunch. We would have waited about an hour to get into the Cheesecake Factory, so we just dropped in and got some to take home with us."
"We sure didn't have a 'budget lunch' this week," Bob added, "but we did have some delightful food. We're all geared up for the great concert by the best steel guitar player in the Midwest, coming up Friday, May 18 at the Oak Tree Opry. Curt Shoemaker is not only a great steel player, he's bringing his whole band with him, so it's going to be one swell night for us. I'd sure recommend reserved seats. 712-762-4363.
