Remembering Earl Scruggs

Remembering Earl Scruggs

In all of American popular music, Earl Scruggs stands as one of the very few musicians who singularly changed performance practice on their instruments and in the process birthed an entirely new genre. Without him, bluegrass music as we know it would almost certainly never have happened. And countless young players might never have chosen the banjo as their vehicle for creativity.
Prior to Scruggs, the banjo was played through variations of a strumming technique. From the guitar pick approach of New Orleans jazz pioneer Johnny St. Cyr and the clawhammer and frailing patterns of David “Stringbean” Akeman and Uncle Dave Macon, going all the way back to players from before the Civil War whose names are long forgotten, it was treated as a rhythm device mainly to accompany vocals.
That started to change around 1928, when 4-year-old Earl Eugene Scruggs began listening to his brother Junie play banjo at home on the family farm in Flint Hill, N.C. Mother Maybelle Carter soon caught his attention with her “Carter scratch” style, in which she articulated melodies on the low strings of her guitar with her thumb while chording with the rest of her right-hand fingers. This was the seed of what the world now knows as Scruggs’ “three-finger” approach: Rather than strum or frail, he would pluck the strings, often in syncopated arpeggios, which enabled him to expand the instrument’s rhythmic range as well as explore its potential as a solo voice.
People began to notice this new sound when Scruggs joined the Morris Brothers in 1939, taking the place of Don Reno. He left the farm and went full-time into music in 1945 with Lost John Miller and the Allied Kentuckians. They played mainly over WNOX in Knoxville, Tenn., as well as on a weekly program at WSM in Nashville. Jim Shumate heard him on the latter gig and didn’t hesitate to recommend him to Bill Monroe after Stringbean had decided to leave the Blue Grass Boys.
With Monroe from December 1945 through early 1948, Scruggs played the key role in defining the parameters of bluegrass music. His bandmate Lester Flatt tendered his resignation a few weeks later after Scruggs left, and they joined with bassist Howard Watts, aka Cedric Rainwater, to form the first incarnation of the Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys. Named after the Carter Family song “Foggy Mountain Top,” they debuted in January 1948 on WDVA in Danville, Va. By the time they dissolved the group in February 1969, they had made household names of themselves as Flatt & Scruggs and brought the music they’d helped create to fans throughout the world.
Milestones were many during their long run. In 1960, they performed at the Newport Folk Festival for the second time and live on the CBS television special “The Revlon Revue: Folk Sound, USA.” Two years later, they headlined at Carnegie Hall and recorded “The Ballad of Jed Clampett” as the theme for “The Beverly Hillbillies,” which became the first bluegrass single to peak at No. 1 and was nominated for a Grammy. Later, in 1968, they would win a Grammy for Best Country Performance, Duo or Group — Vocal or Instrumental, for their rendition of “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.”
As time passed, creative differences emerged between the longtime partners. Where Flatt adhered to the traditions of bluegrass music and its antecedents, Scruggs stayed open to new possibilities. Shortly after their split, the Earl Scruggs Revue was formed, featuring Earl’s sons Gary and Randy, along with pianist Bob Wilson, drummer Jody Maphis and, later on, a third son, Steve, and fiddler Vassar Clements. Their repertoire embraced contemporary tunes by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Michael Nesmith, and ingeniously blended elements of bluegrass, Country and rock. Its members joined Arlo Guthrie, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Linda Ronstadt and others on Scruggs’ 1972 album I Saw the Light with a Little Help from My Friends, which is credited with inspiring the all-star, genre-hopping series of Will the Circle Be Unbroken albums. He even opened the door in Nashville to female executives by choosing his wife, Louise Certain Scruggs, to manage him in 1956.
Scruggs took home three Grammys, for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals (“Same Old Train,” from the compilation album A Tribute to Tradition, 1998), Best Country Instrumental Performance (“Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” from Earl Scruggs and Friends, 2001) and Best Country Instrumental Performance (“Earl’s Breakdown,” 2004). He was inducted into CMA’s Country Music Hall of Fame along with Lester Flatt in 1985 and was honored separately with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. And in 2008, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Hailed by The New York Times as “the Paganini of the five-string banjo,” Scruggs died peacefully in Nashville on March 28.

Lionel Richie

1. „You Are“ – Duett mit Blake Shelton
2. „Say You, Say Me“ – Duett mit Rasmus Seebach

Neal McCoy’s New Single “Shotgun Rider” Now Available

Neal McCoy’s New Single “Shotgun Rider” Now Available

From the new album “XII”, produced by
Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and Brent Rowan
Neal McCoy - XIINashville, TN (April 24, 2012) – Blaster Records recording artist and multi-platinum singer and entertainer Neal McCoy has released his new single, “Shotgun Rider”, which is being added to radio station playlists nationwide.  This latest single is from Neal’s twelfth career album, appropriately titled XII, which was produced by Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and renowned guitarist Brent Rowan.

Written by hit songwriters Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, Keith Anderson and Ben Hayslip, “Shotgun Rider” is an uptempo, feel-good song about asking your girl to take a ride in your truck and spending time together.

“No matter how far or how short the drive, it's always better to have someone you really like,  Ridin’ Shotgun with you, than going it alone," commented Neal McCoy about the new single.

“Shotgun Rider” is just one of the great tracks on XII, the latest in Neal McCoy’s varied career. Over the years, he has sold six million albums, with five #1 singles, over 25 charted singles, and has had a string of top ten radio hits.  McCoy, also known for his exciting live shows, has completed numerous USO tours and supports the East Texas Angel Network, his charity for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Toby Keith Embarks On His 10th USO Tour

Toby Keith is overseas on his 10th USO tour to entertain U.S. troops. He tweeted from Bahrain on his first day of the tour and posted numerous photos on his Facebook account. The photos show Keith posing with members of the military and signing red solo cups. He can also be seen on stage performing for a large crowd. Keith is nominated for male video and video of the year at the CMT Music Awards.
Here's another pic Toby posted to Twitter and his tweet: @TobyKeithMusic how about a RT for my twin boys in the Marine Corps.

Steven Tyler Could Win CMT Music Award

Steven Tyler could win a Country Music Television Award. So could Sting and Lionel Richie. Tyler and Sting are both nominated in the CMT performance of the year category for their separate "CMT Crossroads" performances. Tyler performed with Carrie Underwood in a special Super Bowl edition of the series. Their mash-up of Underwood's "Just A Dream" and Aerosmith's "Dream On" is nominated. Sting and Vince Gill performed a "Crossroads" show together in New York. They are nominated for their rendition of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You." Richie is up for collaborative video of the year with Shania Twain for their duet of "Endless Love." Fans can pick the winners by voting online at CMT.com through June 4. The CMT Awards air live from Nashville June 6.

Scotty McCreery Takes Grounder To The Throat In Baseball Game

Scotty McCreery took one for the team, and it could have cost him his music career. He got hit in the throat by a ground ball while he was pitching a game for Garner High School. The News & Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina, reports that it happened in the third inning when a one-hopper back to the mound hit McCreery in the throat. He retrieved the ball, threw out the batter and stayed in the game for another inning. McCreery's publicist says he is OK. To add insult to injury, his team lost. While he was in, McCreery struck out six and allowed seven hits, including a home run. He left with a 2-1 lead, but the other team rallied for a 3-2 victory. McCreery is up for breakthrough video of the year at the CMT Music Awards for "The Trouble With Girls."

Zac Brown's Camp Southern Ground Meets Kids' Special Needs

Zac Brown may be best known for his musical contributions, but he could add entrepreneur to his title. "There are 12 companies that I run, with a lot of help of other people," Zac tells The Boot.
Of the dozen different entities, the one foremost in Zac's mind is Camp Southern Ground, a non-profit camp south of Atlanta for, as Zac describes it, kids who are "mainstream, underprivileged and with developmental disorders."
"We'll have an organic farm there, straight farm-to-table," says the singer and band leader, who is also an accomplished chef. "The kids will be able to eat what they pull up from out the ground that day. It's a big project, a big undertaking."

Brantley Gilbert Goes Gold

Brantley Gilbert's debut album has gone gold. The Recording Industry Association of America has certified "Halfway to Heaven" for selling over 500,000 copies. Gilbert says in a statement that he never thought his first major release would sell that much. He gave a big thanks to "BG Nation and all ya'll who bought a copy." Gilbert's latest single, "You Don't Know Her Like I Do" is now in the top 15 on the country singles chart. He is nominated in the CMT breakthrough video of the year category for his No. 1 hit "Country Must Be Country Wide."

Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman Immortalized in Wax

Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman Immortalized in Wax

Madame Tussauds wax museum opened it’s doors down under in Sydney, Australia last week. Among the usual suspects of Marilyn Monroe and Queen Elizabeth is Keith Urban and his famous actress of a wife Nicole Kidman. Madame Tussauds general manager Hywel Mathias said it takes 60 artists 800 hours to create a figure from beginning to end and each as a net worth of about $220,000.
Looks like taking a trip down under and standing next to Wax Keith Urban may be the closest I ever get to snatching a picture of just me and my favorite country crooner.

Kelly Clarkson Releases A New Version Of Her Hit Single "Mr. Know It All"

Superstar Kelly Clarkson Releases A New Version Of Her Hit Single "Mr. Know It All"

RCA Nashville promotion staff, L to R:
Parker Fowler, David Berry, Liz Sledge, Dan Nelson, Kelly Clarkson, Gary Overton (Chairman & CEO Sony Music Nashville), Josh Easler and Keith Gale
Nashville, TN - RCA recording artist Kelly Clarkson has just released a new version of her hit single, “Mr. Know It All,” written by Brett James, Brian Seals, Ester Dean and Dante Jones, to country radio. Today, it is one of the most-added songs on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and Country Aircheck.
“Believability is my favorite part about music, from the artists to the musicians,” says Clarkson. “And believability is certainly what draws me, and I’m sure a lot of other people, to country music. The strong lyrics and melodies exude honesty and I think people are always drawn to authenticity.”
“I was born and raised in Texas and I’ve always been a huge country music fan,” reflects Kelly. “In fact, when I was on the first season of American Idol, I begged them to do a country week but they didn’t do that until the second season. I really wanted to sing Reba’s ‘Why Haven’t I Heard From You.’ The sassy female vocalists of country music really inspire me as an artist, namely Reba, Miranda, Dolly and Loretta. Their soulful grit captivates me.
“As a songwriter, lyrics are really important to me,” Kelly continues. “Even when I was a little girl singing into my hairbrush in my room, pretending I was on a stage, the lyrics were what I really paid attention to. I was only sixteen years old when I wrote ‘Because of You’ and sadly enough, that song is a true story. When Reba wanted to record that song as a duet, it was such an honor and a dream come true for me. That was my first introduction into working in country music. Then, I got to record ‘Don’t You Wanna Stay’ with Jason Aldean and it was such an awesome experience. I can’t believe we’ve won two awards for that collaboration. I feel extremely lucky that the country audience has been so welcoming to me.
“At this point in my career, it just felt natural to release a different version of ‘Mr. Know It All’ to country radio,” says Clarkson. “I was so excited when my manager, Narvel Blackstock, told me that Dann Huff was going to produce the new track. I have been a fan of Dann’s for years and he is so talented. Our goal was to create a sassy, soulful vibe. I really hope people like this new version of the song.”
Recently, Clarkson was featured in Entertainment Weekly’s Music Issue, making their “The 30 Greatest Artists Right Now” list.
