Sugarland of lacking compassion for fans

Victims' attorney accuses Sugarland of lacking compassion for fans

Written by Carrie Ritchie-The Indianapolis Star

INDIANAPOLIS — An attorney for several of the victims in the Indiana State Fair stage rigging collapse has accused Sugarland of lacking compassion and concern for fans who attended the concert.
Kenneth J. Allen said he was “struck by the lack of emotion and compassion” band members Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush showed while they gave depositions Thursday and Friday in West Virginia. They shared their knowledge of the events leading up to the Aug. 13 stage rigging collapse that killed seven people and injured nearly 60.
“There was not a tear shed, there was not a moment taken to compose,” Allen said. “If your concern is genuine, how could you not be emotional?”
Reports released Thursday showed that the collapse occurred because the stage rigging didn’t have enough support to withstand the winds that accompanied a storm that evening. They also cited confusion over who had the final say in postponing the show.
That’s where Sugarland comes in.
According to a report from Witt Associates, which evaluated the steps the fair took that night, state fair executive director Cindy Hoye wanted to delay the show because of the weather, but Sugarland’s tour manager, Helen Rollens, wanted the show to go on as scheduled. Hoye assumed the band had the authority to make the call.
Rollens has not been deposed yet, but Allen said that Nettles and Bush told attorneys during their depositions that the fans’ safety was not their responsibility. However, he said the band members said they would have postponed the concert if they thought their own safety would be jeopardized.
Allan Mayer, a spokesman for the band, on Thursday issued a statement saying Nettles and Bush “care deeply about their fans and, as they’ve said, nobody wants to get to the bottom of what happened more than they do.”

Nelly Furtado

THE FINAL RECORDINGS OF WAYLON JENNINGS

THE FINAL RECORDINGS OF WAYLON JENNINGS
TO BE RELEASED 10 YEARS AFTER
COUNTRY MUSIC ICON’S DEATH

GOIN’ DOWN ROCKIN’:
The Last Recordings of Waylon Jennings

DUE SEPTEMBER 2012
ON SAGUARO ROAD RECORDS
Nashville, TN (April 16, 2012) --- A new album from outlaw country legend Waylon Jennings will be released this September, filled with recordings the icon made during the last few years before his death in 2002. Jennings spent hours in a recording studio with his longtime accompanist, Robby Turner and together they laid down twelve tracks using just Waylon’s guitar and vocals and Turner’s bass.  All songs were personally selected by the country star, ones that resonated in a deeply personal way and reflected his state of mind, his passions, and important statements he wanted to make about his life.  The duo planned out the future instrumentation that would be added to the tracks, but Jennings was never able to complete them.  10 years after his passing, Turner returned to the recordings, finishing each song to honor Waylon’s vision of what would turn out to be his very last album.  Bringing in musicians who had long worked with Waylon, such as Reggie Young, Richie Albright and tour mate Tony Joe White, Turner painstakingly created the album that Waylon set out to make.  "Waylon knows he's surrounded by friends and all that hear this will feel as if they know Waylon in all his authenticity," explains his widow, country singer Jessi Colter.  With his family’s blessing, Goin’ Down Rockin’: The Last Recordings of Waylon Jennings will be available on September 11 (Saguaro Road Records).  No one has ever heard these performances before; they are Waylon’s last gift to his fans.
Saguaro Road Records’ Senior Vice President, Retail, Mike Jason explains, “I remember when Waylon was revolutionizing country music and when we heard about these recordings, I knew we had to have them. To me, this is classic Waylon music every bit as good as his ‘70s classics but his singing bears a vulnerable and deeply personal touch. Waylon still has many fans, but with these recordings I’m confident that we’ll introduce him to a new generation in the same way that Johnny Cash’s last recordings found him an entirely new audience.”

Jennings wrote 11 of the 12 songs that appear on the new album, a testament to the personal nature of the recordings, and they reveal an artist in the midst of a final creative peak.  In addition to his own songs, the album includes Tony Joe White’s “Goin’ Down Rockin’” (on which White himself is a guest). In all, the album will feature eleven songs that have never been released before.

One of the all time greatest country music vocalists, Jennings was also the founder of the Outlaw movement, received two Grammy Awards, and multiple Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music awards.  11 of his albums hit #1 on the country charts, with 16 #1 singles.  In all, 54 of Jennings’ albums have charted and more than 100 singles cracked the country and pop charts.  He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.

Steel Guitar News April 16. 2012

Hello fellow players,

This video link was sent to me by Fred Shannon and I thank him deeply for it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vq7kr6xaFA

I left Nashville Airport in my little white Piper PA28 in this video, I believe it was the day after we lost Jeff Newman. My flight to Lancaster, Texas was very uneventful. After I went to the steel guitar show in Dallas, played the show and received my gold colored Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Fame plaque and imposed on Texan Fred Shannon to take me back to the airport and I’m glad I asked him too.

Upon getting to the airport I found I had left the master switch on in my airplane that had a weak battery anyway. The starter would not turn the engine over, so wonderful Fred drove up to my airplane, jumped out, came around and asked me what was wrong. Upon telling him of my plight he said, “Well I’ll just hand prop the plane.”

Which he did as you can see here. This is no safe job for a 75 year old gentleman, Texan or not. His beautiful daughter took a video of it as it happened. I can’t believe the airplane caught about the second try, started and I proceeded to head for Nashville.

However, I got trapped in Texarkana in bad weather. The next morning I had to lock the brakes and controls, set the choke and magnetos along with the throttle correctly and spin it over all by myself. I did so and again it started fine. I had just bought a Garmin 496 which allowed me to see obstacles on the ground and made the trip back a non-event.

Any of you that would like to get on the Steel Guitar Forum and thank Fred Shannon for his help the day I left Dallas with my award, I would appreciate you doing so. This is as fine a gentleman as you’ll ever meet in steel guitar. Fred Shannon, you are the finest.

My future at the controls of this Piper is over as I sold the airplane two weeks ago. I also sold my Bonanza, but still have my Piper PA22-20-160. I’m sure most of you Piper guys can read what these numbers are.

I’d like to thank all of you for your comments on the nice letters we got on Jeff Newman and for letting me share them all with so many of the rest of you. When I duplicate emails that people send me for my newsletter, I send them just the way I get them. If there is something you don’t agree with, it should be between you and the composer of the email, not you and I.

That said, here is another email I got praising Jeff.

Dear Mr Seymour,
In your last Gazette, or in the one before the last, you appealed for stories about Mr Jeff Newman. I never knew him, but I often spoke to his wife Fran over the phone, when I ordered his CDs. Her customer service was just as impeccable as her husband’s teaching. She adhered strictly and honestly to what was published on the Web: “If you find that the material does not satisfy you, we’ll refund your purchase.” It was also announced that the educational material was not the cheapest available. However, considering the work that he must have put into making the tapes, later converted to CDs, it was far from expensive. The would-be steeler could not fail but be impressed with Mr Newman’s seriousness, his jacket, shirt and tie and shiny boots sported by a no-nonsense teacher.
The student had right away the conviction that he was going to learn something, which was not the case when my first steel guitar arrived and I watched the two-hour long video that came with it. I watched the video first and was profoundly discouraged by it. It would be unkind to mention who made that ghastly video, but it was mumbo jumbo and empty talk; not a chart of any description was in sight. The wretched thing was delivered without any paper support and in despair I fell asleep watching it. I bought all of Mr Newman’s material, except all the “wood-shed” steel accompaniment songs which were for a long, long time far beyond me. On one occasion, Mrs Newman sent me two CDs until I received one which worked. She is a lady who stands by her word.
The most striking aspect about the courses was the way in which they were all constructed to follow on from each other. Construction and the thought Mr Newman put into his approach were reassuring and designed to give the hard-working student the tools to help himself a little until the next notch up arrived. No other steel-teaching methods have come near to bringing the novice up to speed picking and understanding what was being taught. He had method and rigour, and the occasional laugh. Everything he produced showed that he had the knack of being able to put himself in the situation of the learner who knew nothing, but who was taught how to learn. Anything I know, I owe it to Mr Newman. I forget where he said it, but it was very pertinent, something to this effect: “Don’t waste your time trying to work something out for yourself, when it can be explained to you simply so that you can do the work yourself and understand what you are doing, and have to do, to become better.”
Enclosed an MP3 just finished – no masterpiece, but it kept me off the streets for a while.
Yours with the best of wishes as always in your thriving business with all those new Jackson guitars.
Tim.
Thank you Tim for that wonderful email. We have lost way too many steel guitarists in the business for various reasons over the past five years. I deeply miss them all and most of them I will severely miss for the rest of my life. I think most of you feel the same way.

It’s been over a week since the great little steel guitar party we had. The memories of this steel guitar get-together will live long and I’m already looking forward to our next one. I don’t know if it will be in the summer sometime or if it will have to wait until next year, but whenever it is, be ready for it and be here.

Remember, it’s just a free get-together for all of us to have fun. A lot of music and your chance to talk directly to the manufacturers. David and I did not have a lot of chance to discuss the mechanics of the new Jackson, however we had several telephone conversations since he got back to the factory.

One thing I’m telling David is that we need steel guitars to be built with certain commonalities because we don’t want to have a parts problem with any of the new Jacksons. If he can standardize legs, pickups, tuning keys and several common parts, it will make it easier on anybody that services these guitars and easier for anyone that wants to modify or hotrod them.

Leaving lots of room open for these guitars to be modified will give us all the freedom to do what we want to personalize the guitars. This also gives David the option to use his incredible inventiveness to build better guitars when he sells them.

Talking to David over the weekend, I did pickup that he wants to keep the design of the new Jacksons light, simple and inexpensive and try to have them available whenever anybody wants one or two.

I don’t know how much I will be flying and playing in the future, but it sure will make it nice to have a small, light steel guitar to put in a four or six passenger airplane, as you folks that travel in SUVs also know. Space can be a problem as can weight on these long summer drives to these shows.

COUNTRY LINE UP AT “LARRY’S COUNTRY DINER” May 2012

MAY'S MENU OFFERS A STRONG CLASIC COUNTRY LINE UP
AT “LARRY’S COUNTRY DINER”

Lip-Smackin’, Toe-Tappin’ Spontaneous Good Times at One Of
RFD’s Top-Rated Shows
Nashville, TN (April 15th, 2012) – There may only be eighteen tables at Larry’s Country Diner,” but it serves 1.4 million people each and every month as one of the top-rated shows on the RFD-TV network.  The diner is not your ordinary restaurant, but rather a unique down-home variety show that in just over two short years has become a favorite “eatery” of country fans everywhere.  Cornbread and black-eyed peas only complement the heapin’ helpin’ of country music performances served up by the stars of yesterday and today.
A new episode of "Larry’s Country Diner” will air each week in May on the RFD-TV network.  May’s menu of stars offers a strong classic line up for country music fans:
Week of:
May 3: Helen Cornelius with Jim Ed Brown
May 10: Con Hunley
May 17: Joe Stampley
May 24: Steve Hall & Shotgun Red (with special appearance by Anita Stapleton)
May 31: Freddy Weller & Dickey Lee
All Schedules Subject to Change without Notice
Air times for “Larry’s Country Diner” are Thursday night at 8e/7c, Friday morning at 10e/9c, or Saturday evening at 11e/10c.  For more information on “Larry’s Country Diner,” please visit larryscountrydiner.com.
Taped bi-monthly in front of a live studio/diner audience at NorthStar Studios (3201 Dickerson Pike, Nashville), the show’s spontaneity is part of the mystique of “Larry’s Country Diner” which contributes greatly to its success.  “The prevailing attitude at the diner is ‘…the cameras are always rollin’… and we don’t care,’” explains Larry Black, host and creator of “Larry’s Country Diner.”
The fact that plates are dropped or broken during a performance, a rack of knives and forks are dumped on the floor or that some of the lights go out while they were filming makes the show all that more exciting in a day where even reality shows are produced within strict script guidelines.  “It’s the kind of television you just don’t see too much anymore and both the artists and fans love it,” states Black who adds, “We even tell our artists that once the tape starts rolling, it does not stop.  If you get yourself in trouble, get yourself out ‘cause we’re not stoppin’.”
Because of its popularity, getting a seat to see a live taping might prove more difficult than getting a reservation at one of L.A.’s most trendy posh restaurants—the first available table is not available until 2013, so you’ll want to plan way in advance.  For reservations, please call 615-673-2846 or email paula@gabrielcommunications.com.

Country Music Video for "Amazed by the Light That is You"

Contemporary Christian Country Music Video for "Amazed by the Light That is You" uses Bible Phrases and Subliminal Editing Techniques

Viewers of a new Christian country music video for the song "Amazed by the Light That is You" are taken on a wild ride that is designed to lead to rejoicing in the glory of God.

Created and posted by Architect5000, the video contains Bible scripture from the books of Psalms, Isaiah, Corinthians, Romans, Peter, and John. In addition, the video presents phrases from a sermon as well as lyrics from the song. The Bible phrases are shown for enough time to read them aloud while the single words often appear in quick flashes.

The theme of the video is "Seeking light in life" according to the video artist, who also states that one of the goals is "Reaching out to Christian musicians and music-lovers."

Lead and backing vocals on the song are by singer and noted vocal coach Jan Linder-Koda while the instruments are all by Marty Rifkin, whose credits include Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Tom Petty, Dwight Yoakam, LeAnn Rimes, and Sandra Piller, among many others.

"Amazed by the Light That is You" is a song written by John Scott G of Golosio Publishing (BMI). You can view the "Amazed/Praise" video on YouTube:

In the swirling and colorful video, the story moves in two different directions. On one hand, there are images of chaos, confusion, and consternation. But these dark moments are counterbalanced by passages of gleaming and brighter-than-normal light and uplifting messages of joy and redemption.

Christian country music-lovers are encouraged to share, re-post, and link to the "Amazed by the Light That is You" video.
