Steel Guitar News January 23. 2012

Hello fellow players,

Well here we go rapidly coming up on anniversary number thirty.  Going back through all our records and probing the dusty corners of my memory, it seems as though May first of this year will be our thirtieth anniversary.  Where does time go?

I remember how I got started.  I’ll have to thank or blame the Emmons Company for getting me stopped and aimed in the right direction.  I had been walking down the street in Goodlettsville, a close suburb on Nashville, getting my car repaired and while just wandering down the street and waiting for my car to be fixed, I walked by a beautiful little space for rent with a great big picture window and a Dairy Queen next door.

There was a guy watching me come up the street and when I got to him he asked me if I’d be interested in renting the building.  I had just sold my 1963 Shelby Cobra roadster and had a pocket full of money so I said, “Sure.  I’ll rent your building.”

He said, “What are you going to do with it?”

I replied I didn’t know, however it would be legal and fun.  I gave him the first and last month’s rent.  He gave me the keys and I wandered on down the street not knowing what I was really going to do.  That quandary was soon answered by a phone call from Ron Lashley who said he was coming to visit and wanted to borrow a car to get around town.

After asking him where he was going to go in town, he replied he was looking for someone to be a dealer for the Emmons guitar.  I said, “Great.  I’m your dealer.  Come up and get your car and some money.”

A month later I had twelve new Emmons guitars on the floor.  He promised me that I could never sell them as fast as he could build them.  We all know that wasn’t true.  However, I sold a lot of Emmons guitars in the next two years.  I then took in the Sho-Bud line in addition to Emmons and Steel Guitar World which it was called then never looked back.

I hired a good crew including several employees from the Sho-Bud Company.  They ran the business while I toured around the United States with the famous hillbillies of the era.

Over the years there have been many changes but the craziness has pretty well settled down to a calm, dependable world including a name change and some other changes.  Probably this has been the best move I’ve ever made in the world of steel guitar.  It has been a dangerous move at times according to my bank account fluctuations, but I always had my playing life to keep pumping into the business.

I got much help from competitors in the beginning.  Shot Jackson and his sons, Ron Lashley and his sons and other dealers helped me in many ways to keep my doors open.  Many people have been very good and I will always appreciate my friends around the United States and in Nashville itself.

Steel guitar people are about as good as it gets.  Anyway, we’ll probably be throwing a big anniversary deal around the first of May.  So get ready for big sales and big parties.

With much grief, we received an email from the president of our local union, Dave Pomeroy.  Larry Butler died early Friday morning in his sleep.  He was 69.  In 1975, he won a Grammy songwriting award for "Hey, Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,'' which was a hit for B.J. Thomas. Butler co-wrote the song with Chips Moman.
In 1980, Larry won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, the only Nashville producer to win the award for his studio work with artists ranging from longtime friend Kenny Rogers to Johnny Cash.  He also became Johnny Cash's in-house producer, pianist and musical director. His closest Nashville relationship was with Kenny Rogers and the two remained close throughout his life.
We also lost Larry Nutter.  Larry played lead guitar for Kitty Wells, Jack Greene, Jean Shepard, Jeannie Seely and was an in demand session player.

One of the greatest selling items we have amongst professionals and other players that maybe have not spent as much time, is the Bobro that makes your steel guitar sound like a Dobro.  These items have sold very well over the past years.  We have the Bobro on special now with free shipping and a free nylon bar that makes it sound even more like a Dobro than ever.  See it here:  www.steelguitar.net/bobro.html

I’d also like to remind everybody that for the rest of this month and for all of February we have free shipping on any guitar.

Check out our monthly specials at  http://www.steelguitar.net/monthlyspecials.html and we’ll try to save you a lot of money.

McGRAW STRIKES GOLD

McGRAW STRIKES GOLD ON EVE OF
NEWEST ALBUM RELEASE EMOTIONAL TRAFFIC
WITH CERTIFICATION OF LATEST #1 SINGLE

Tim McGraw - "Emotional Traffic"(Nashville, Tennessee) -- January 23, 2012 –Tim McGraw adds yet another awards plaque to his extensive trophy wall with the announcement that his most recent #1 single Felt Good On My Lips has struck digital download gold on the sales front.
The good news comes on the countdown to McGraw’s much anticipated new studio album, Emotional Traffic, being released by Curb Records tomorrow.  Felt Good On My Lips is included in the new package.
The song reached #1 for McGraw on the country charts in January 2011 and stayed at the pinnacle for three consecutive weeks.  It also scored well on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. A collaborative creative effort from songwriters Brett Beavers, Jim Beavers and Brett and Brad Warren, Felt Good On My Lips was produced by Tim McGraw and Byron Gallimore.
The good news of new gold for McGraw highlights a major January return to high visibility in the marketplace.  The January 24th release of Emotional Traffic has been preceded on the Curb release schedule by four digital single releases from the new package by the label.
The release of Emotional Traffic also serves as a fresh reminder of the strength of the unique superstar presence McGraw has carved in the industry since his 1994 breakout with the #1 single Don’t Take The Girl.—a presence that was reflected in Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems 2010 proclamation of Tim McGraw as “Artist of the Decade” (2000-2010).
On the heels of the release of Emotional Traffic, McGraw’s legions of fans hoping to catch their favorite artist in concert will potentially be striking more gold this summer. In June, McGraw will join Kenny Chesney on the “Brothers of the Sun Tour.”  The coast-to-coast large arena concert schedule will hit more than 20 major market venues between June and August. Markets already confirmed include Tampa, Atlanta, Dallas, Philadelphia, Nashville, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Anaheim, and Washington, DC.

ON THE ROAD WITH BOB & SHEILA EVERHART January 23. 2012

ON THE ROAD WITH BOB & SHEILA EVERHART

Oceanside, California....."It just seems impossible that our first two months of hiatus, here in California, is almost over," Sheila Everhart says, "now we have to go back to work, spending two months in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, performing for our booking agent, Francis Hahn."
Even though the Everhart's time in California is about up, Bob is quick to add to Sheila's observations.  "We've had a wonderful time here in Oceanside.  It's a nice location, about half-way between Los Angeles and San Diego.  The campground we are in is only about a block from the beach, and just out front we can catch a bus to just about anywhere, or walk two blocks and take the very neat commuter train as far east as Escondido.  I really like riding the little train, it reminds me a lot of traveling in Europe, and wow what a neat thing it could be if a train like this connected Des Moines Jordan Creek Mall with the Council Bluffs Shopping Center (at Lake Manawa).  Anyway, there's lots going on every day.  I spend a little time sunning, have to walk the dog, do my normal communication work with regard to the festival in LeMars and our April 20-21-22 show at the Oak Tree Opry in Anita.  What's really fun though is when something special happens. Camp Pendleton, the Marine facility is just a few miles north of us.  Lately we've been hearing a lot of 'bombing' going off, which definitely means something is happening, and then just last Friday, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife flew right over us on their way to talk to Marines going off to Afghanistan.  It was a huge helicopter, and quite a sight.  We also see lots of blimps advertising various stuff, everything from football games to automobile tires gliding noiselessly along.  Shortly after we got here, I was walking along the beach and saw an absolutely huge Orca whale just off shore.  His big black fin sticking out of the water in glittering sunshine, occasionally showing some of his white under-belly.  A few days later three delightful dolphins played along the whirlpools and eddys along the shore.  Surfers are always at seaside, and a couple of times the waves have been as high as thirteen feet, which is pretty high for surfers.  Lots of 'pipelines' when that happens. There's always fishermen throwing their lines as far out as they can get, and sometimes they catch something.  It reminds me of Sheila.  She likes to cook with wine, and sometimes she gets some in the food.  Anyway, it's easy to catch the little train to see a movie.  "Hugo" and "Tin Tin" were my favorites, but "Sherlock Holmes" was very good too.  Sheila said don't forget we go to Carlsbad (a small very European town about three miles away) on the bus for Wednesday Farmer's Market. They always have lots of interesting foods available.  Avocados are plentiful, and right now oranges are in season.  Ranier cherries and absolutely huge strawberries are also in season.  Usually the produce is quite inexpensive."
Bobbie Lhea was quick to join in.  "I'll really miss some of our budget meals.  One of my favorites is 'Taco Tuesday' at the little Mexican grocery store just up the street.  I also like the delicious pizza we get at Brooklyn Boys, and mom likes the hamburgers they make at the little food stand at Buccaneer Bay (right next to the beach where we walk).  Dad is sold on the Hawaiian food we get uptown in Oceanside, and LeMar (our little min-pin dog known as the 'singer') likes it when we bring back chicken from Churchs.  And our cat, Simba, really likes it when we visit the Veracruz Fish House in Carlsbad.  Guess what he gets?"
"It's off to Texas for us," Bob added, but we still have a week yet in Oceanside, and that might permit a trip to the lovely mission San Capistrano."
