"This year's honorees offer a variety of brilliance, contributions and lasting impressions on our culture," said President/CEO of The Recording Academy Neil Portnow. "It is an honor to recognize such a diverse group of individuals whose talents and achievements have had an indelible impact on our industry."
The Lifetime Achievement Award honors performers who have made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording while the Trustees Award recognizes such contributions in areas other than performance. Both awards are determined by vote of The Recording Academy's National Board of Trustees. Technical GRAMMY Award recipients are determined by vote of The Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council and Chapter Committees as well as The Academy's Trustees. The award is presented to individuals and companies who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field.
About the Lifetime Achievement Award Honorees:
As pioneers of Southern rock, the Allman Brothers Band created a unique sound blending elements of blues, country, jazz and rock. Known for their outstanding improvisational and jam-style shows, the band's breakthrough album, 1971's At Fillmore East, is a definitive live concert recording. The band has achieved artistic and commercial success with hits such as "Whipping Post," "Ramblin' Man" and "Jessica," the latter having earned them a 1995 GRAMMY for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. In 1995 the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
During his 50-plus years in show business, five-time GRAMMY winner Glen Campbell has released more than 70 albums. In 1967 he won GRAMMYs in both country and pop categories for his hits "Gentle On My Mind" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," respectively. Campbell has three recordings in the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame and has also been inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the famed Wrecking Crew, Los Angeles' group of top studio musicians in the '60s. In 2011 he released his farewell album, Ghost On The Canvas, which featured collaborations with Jakob Dylan, Chris Isaak and Billy Corgan, among others.
Widely known as the composer of the GRAMMY-winning "The Girl From Ipanema," arranger, singer and pianist/guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim* was influential in the creation of the Brazilian bossa nova style and its international popularity. His songs and arrangements have been performed by numerous artists around the world. In 1995 he won a posthumous Best Latin Jazz Performance GRAMMY for his album Antonio Brasileiro.
Trumpeter Wayne Jackson and tenor saxophonist Andrew Love comprise one of the greatest and most recorded horn sections, the Memphis Horns. Early in their career, the duo appeared on nearly every Stax Records recording, helping the label define its sound. Known for their unique funk/soul style, the Musicians Hall of Fame inductees have appeared on recordings for artists such as Al Green, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, and U2.
As one of the most prolific country artists in history, George Jones has had more than 150 hits over his half-century career. From honky tonk to country ballads, he has remained at the top of the charts with hits such as "White Lightning," "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and "Still Doin' Time." Jones is a two-time GRAMMY winner, Country Music Hall of Fame inductee and a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. At 80 years old, he continues to tour, playing more than 60 shows each year.
In the 1960s Diana Ross led Motown act the Supremes, one of America's most successful vocal groups. In the 1970s, Ross began her solo career and had continued success with hits such as "Love Hangover," "Upside Down" and "Missing You." In her nearly 50 years in the entertainment business, she has sold more than 100 million albums and has received a number of accolades for her work, including a Golden Globe and Tony Award and has been a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. Ross recently toured the country with her More Today Than Yesterday tour and will continue touring into 2012.
With his unique fusion of jazz, blues and spoken word, Gil Scott-Heron*'s music influenced the creation of the rap genre. The first artist signed to Arista Records, his recordings such as "Johannesburg" and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" were known for their sharp lyrics that commented on social and political issues. His songs also helped tell stories of African-Americans in the United States. Scott-Heron continued to record up until his death in 2011, releasing his most recent album, I'm New Here, in 2010.
About the Trustees Award Honorees:
Musician, bandleader, composer, and arranger Dave Bartholomew has had an illustrious career in music spanning genres such as big band, swing and rock and roll. Together with Fats Domino, he wrote more than 40 hits in the 1950s, including Billboard chart toppers "Goin' Home" and "Ain't That A Shame." He produced, wrote and arranged for a number of artists, including Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson and Chuck Berry — each of whom topped the charts with Bartholomew's songs. He has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though semiretired, he continues to occasionally perform with the Dave Bartholomew Big Band at music festivals.
As former CEO and co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs* helped create products and technology that transformed the way we consume music, TV, movies, and books. A creative visionary, Jobs' innovations such as the iPod and its counterpart, the online iTunes store, revolutionized the industry and how music was distributed and purchased. In 2002 Apple Computer Inc. was a recipient of a Technical GRAMMY Award for contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field. The company continues to lead the way with new technology and in-demand products such as the iPhone and iPad.
As one of music's greatest recording engineers, Rudy Van Gelder has recorded several thousand jazz sessions with artists including John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk among many others. His signature techniques give recordings a rich, natural tone and capture the sonic textures of each instrument. Van Gelder continues his more than half- century-long career freelancing on projects, including remastering the analog Blue Note label recordings he worked on decades ago.
About the Technical GRAMMY Recipients:
The German-based company Celemony was founded in 2000 by Peter Neubäcker, Dr. Hildegard Sourgens and Casrsten Gehle. The company specializes in the digital audio pitch-correction software known as Melodyne. The tool is used in studios to tune and manipulate audio signals, including a singer's vocals, or as an aid to the creation of backing vocals from an existing lead vocal. In 2008 Celemony debuted Direct Note Access, which allows independent manipulation of individual notes with chords and polyphonic recordings. The following year, Melodyne Editor won a Musikmesse International Press Award for Most Innovative Product.
Audio engineer Roger Nichols* worked with artists such as Plácido Domingo, Diana Ross, James Taylor, and Stevie Wonder. In the 1970s he began a decades-long relationship with Steely Dan, which earned him six GRAMMY Awards including an Album Of The Year award for his engineering work on 2000's Two Against Nature. He also earned a Best Musical Album For Children GRAMMY in 1997 for producing the John Denver album All Aboard! In addition to his work as an engineer, he was an innovator in creating new technology for audio tape preservation, mastering and digital synchronization. A pioneer in the technique of digital drum replacement, his Wendel sampling computer is a technology still common in music production today.

Tim McGraw shops new label after split with Nashville's Curb
Country superstar pursues life after Curb Records
Even before a Nashville judge released country singer Tim McGraw from his 20-year contract with Curb Records, the superstar’s manager was looking for his next recording deal, according to newly released court records.
With 40 million albums sold to date and an estimated $35 million in last year alone, the singer is one of Nashville’s biggest country music franchises. Any multi-year recording deal he strikes is likely to be worth tens of millions to both McGraw and the company that signs him.
The mission that McGraw manager Coran Capshaw described as “find a future home for Tim” has led to discussions with chief executives at the nation’s biggest recording companies: Warner Music Group, Universal Music, Sony Music and Capitol Records. Capshaw has also consulted with Big Machine Records, the independent Nashville label that launched Taylor Swift’s career.
There is no word yet on whether any deal has been struck.
McGraw — whose spokeswoman cited current legal hurdles — had no comment. Sony and Big Machine records also declined to comment on the outcome of any conversations, while other labels didn’t respond to emailed requests for comments.
McGraw and Curb Records formally parted ways on Nov. 30 when Nashville Chancery Court Judge Russell Perkins ruled that McGraw was free to record with another company.
The judge’s written order in the case, filed after the hearing, outlines testimony by McGraw’s manager in out-of-court depositions about McGraw’s post-Curb dealings.
Since Curb filed suit, Capshaw noted, there have been numerous conversations about McGraw’s future, including discussions with Warner Music Group’s most executives, among them Los Angeles-based Warner Brothers Records Vice Chairman Rob Cavallo and Nashville’s chief Warner executive, John Esposito.
At Sony Music, Capshaw talked about a possible deal with Nashville CEO Gary Overton, New York-based executive Mel Lewinter and former Nashville executive Skip Bishop before he left the company.
At Universal, Capshaw has had discussions with Nashville-based Chief Executive Luke Lewis and the company’s top man, Lucian Grange. Capshaw also testified he had a “general conversation” with Mike Dungan, president and CEO of Capitol Records Nashville. At Big Machine Records, he spoke with Scott Borchetta.
Capshaw’s discussions come amid an upheaval at record companies, with expected shake-ups and possible executive-level changes to come soon in the industry after last month’s breakup of global music company EMI Group.
Universal Music now owns the company’s recording division, including Capitol Nashville.
Career in high gear
The potential upheavals mean that McGraw’s future contract could depend in part on where the executives he has negotiated with in recent months land in an industry that often sees leaders jump from one label to another.
Even without a new recording contract, McGraw’s career appears to be moving forward faster than it has in the year since the dispute began with Curb.
Two new McGraw songs were released in the past month. Curb Records, which owns the rights to all McGraw music recorded before November, will release McGraw’s Emotional Traffic album in January.
McGraw announced he would release a new single in January as well. He said he is releasing his single independently.
While Curb Records and McGraw focus on future releases, both parties continue to hint at lingering animosity after the end of what had been one of the longest-running business partnerships in Nashville’s music industry.
An ongoing breach of contract lawsuit first filed against McGraw by Curb Records and a subsequent countersuit by McGraw against Curb are scheduled to be heard separately in the months to come.
“This isn’t over,” Curb Records Chairman Mike Curb told The Tennessean in rare public comments about the case. “It’s not over. Historically over the last 50 years, we’ve figured these things out. I don’t think we’ve had anything like this in the whole time we’ve been in Nashville.”
McGraw has left little doubt about how he feels about Curb Records’ efforts to halt the release of his latest album.
“It’s extremely unfortunate that it wasn’t released earlier this year in conjunction with the Emotional Traffic tour,” McGraw told his fans online, before adding: “But all I want to do now is focus on the positive and look to the future.”Tennessean reporter Cindy Watts contributed. “We fell in love with Joey and Rory when they were musical guests on ‘Larry’s Country Diner,’ and ‘Country’s Family Reunion’” said Larry Black, producer of both shows. “They are such a sweet couple - so engaging and so warm. When they came up with the idea to do a television special surrounding their new Christmas album, I said, ‘if you can pull it off, we’ll do it.’ The show they came up with smacks of the old and resonates with the new.”
Taped in their 1870s farm house and spacious barn in Pottsville, Tennessee, Joey+Rory mixed songs from their A Farmhouse Christmas cd with light-hearted conversation about Christmas memories, favorite gifts, cooking and more. They performed all of the songs with their band in front of a set that they built in their barn. "It was decked out like a winter wonderland", wife of the duo, Joey Martin added. "We’re thrilled at how it turned out, and we’re anxious for everyone to see it. Funny thing is, we don't even have a television, so we'll have to go visit someone and catch it one these nights!” laughs Rory Feek.
