Birdy: Single: Skinny Love

Birdy

Single: Skinny Love

Sean Paul: Single: She Doesn't Mind

Sean Paul

Single: She Doesn't Mind

Common: Single: Blue Sky

Common

Single: Blue Sky

Nach erfolgreichen Exkursionen ins Filmgeschäft (u.a. "Terminator - Die Erlösung",  "Smokin` Aces", "American Gangster" oder "Scrubs") kehrt Common nun zusammen mit Producer Ernest Wilson aka No ID (Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kanye West…) zu seinen Wurzeln zurück. Zur Essenz. Zum wahren HipHop abseits irgendwelcher schnelllebigen Modetrends oder ähnlichem Schnickschnack. Willkommen zurück!
OST/Carter Burwell (Composer): Album: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (The Score)

OST/Carter Burwell (Composer)

Album: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (The Score)

Dobie Gray, voice of ‘Drift Away,’ dies at age 71

Dobie Gray, voice of ‘Drift Away,’ dies at age 71

Dobie Gray, whose captivating and distinctive voice was at home in soul, country and pop settings, died Tuesday at age 71 at his Nashville home.  Mr. Gray’s health had recently been in decline. His death was announced on his website, www.dobiegray.com.

Recorded at Quadrafonic Sound Studios in Nashville, Mr. Gray’s soulful “Drift Away” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1973, as millions of car radios blasted the memorable chorus, “Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul/ I want to get lost in your rock and roll/ And drift away.” The song became an FM radio staple.
“Dobie was one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet, and the most soulful singer I worked with in my life,” said guitar great Reggie Young, who provided the memorable electric guitar work on “Drift Away,” and who has recorded with Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield, Willie Nelson and thousands of others. “He had something in his voice that set him apart from everybody else, and that made you want to play and create. He was inspirational.”
Mr. Gray was born Leonard Victor Ainsworth near Brookshire, Texas, the son of sharecroppers. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, and he grew up enamored with gospel and country music. In the early 1960s, he moved to California, where he recorded music and appeared in theatre productions including the Los Angeles version of the musical “Hair.” In 1965, Gray’s single “The ‘In’ Crowd” reached No. 11 on Billboard’s R&B chart, and in 1972 he signed with Decca Records.

Williams produced “Drift Away,” which featured guitarists Young and Troy Seals, bassist Mike Leach, keyboard player (and Quadrafonic co-founder) David Briggs and drummer Kenny Malone. The song’s success helped make a name for Quadrafonic, which later hosted sessions from Dan Fogelberg, Jimmy Buffett, Taylor Swiftand many other artists, and Mr. Gray’s experience in Nashville was positive enough that he soon moved to town.

“Nashville was just there at the right time, when I needed it,” Gray told The Tennessean in 1986. “I wanted to develop as a songwriter, and this is a songwriters’ town.”

In Nashville, Mr. Gray penned songs sung by Don Williams, Ray Charles, George Jones, Charley Pride and others. He was popular as an international touring act, and became the first black artist to perform for integrated audiences in South Africa. In the 1980s, he recorded country music material for Capitol Records, scoring a Top 40 country single in 1986 with “That’s One To Grow On.”

In 2003, Uncle Kracker’s version of “Drift Away” featured Mr. Gray’s guest vocal and became a No. 1 hit for 28 weeks on Billboard’s Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, underscoring the song’s enduring popularity. Mr. Gray never found similar success with other singles, though he remained a captivating singer.

“We could never capture that again,” Young said. “Maybe the later things he recorded were too produced. “‘Drift Away’” is a magical thing, and it’s still kind of a mystery. Dobie will be missed, so much. Tonight, before I go to bed, I’m going to turn the lights down, get a glass of wine and sit and listen to that Drift Away album, front to back, and do some thinking.”
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Barbara Orbison was known for finding Nashville talent

Barbara Orbison was known for finding Nashville talent

Roy's manager known as talent scout in Nashville

In the 23 years since the death of singer Roy Orbison, his widow, Barbara Orbison, oversaw a musical empire devoted to the twin goals of preserving his legacy while nurturing a new generation of Nashville songwriters, many of whom went on to considerable success.
On Tuesday, Mrs. Orbison, 61, died of pancreatic cancer while hospitalized in Los Angeles. Her death, which took place on the anniversary of her late husband’s death in 1988, caught the music world by surprise and has left three Nashville institutions — Orbison Records, Barbara Orbison Productions and Still Working Music — suddenly without a chief executive who operated with a “take no prisoners” attitude and a “feverish work ethic,” according to music industry colleagues.
The companies also are left without their chief talent scout. Barbara Orbison was noted in the music industry for an uncanny ability to spot and sign songwriters able to write No. 1 hits for performers as varied asTaylor Swift, Reba McEntire and George Strait.
“She was very shrewd and she ran that company from all over the world,” said Mark Wright, president of Showdog-Universal Records, who worked with Mrs. Orbison on songs by Gary Allan, Brooks & Dunn and others. “She was 24-7 and a force of nature. She will be hard to replace.”
Her sons, Roy Orbison Jr. and Alex Orbison, are expected to take over the businesses, company officials said Wednesday.
Roy Orbison Jr., 43, worked with his mother in 2008 to co-produce a four-CD package of his father’s works. Alex Orbison, 36, is a drummer with the Malibu, Calif.-based rock band Whitestarr and was formerly featured on the VH1 reality show The Rock Life. Neither of the men has a formal title or position with the company.
General Manager and Vice President Clay Myers said he expects the company to continue doing business as usual with the Orbison brothers at the helm.
German-born Barbara Ann Marie Wellhoener Jakobs first met Roy Orbison at a London concert in 1968 and married him a year later. She was 18 at the time, and Orbison was a widower who had lost his first wife, Claudette, in the mid-1960s. Two of the singer’s three sons from that marriage died in a Hendersonville house fire not long after he met Barbara.
Wesley Orbison, 46, the only surviving son from Roy Orbison’s first marriage, lives in Texas and isn’t involved in the Orbison music businesses.

Career revived

During their marriage, Mrs. Orbison became increasingly involved in her husband’s music career, becoming his manager for the last decade of his life. She is credited with reviving what had been a flagging career.
After the singer’s death, Mrs. Orbison retained the rights to all of her husband’s music and launched Still Working for the Man Music — a name that made clear her primary goal of preserving and managing Roy Orbison’s legacy. She later shortened the company name to Still Working Music.
“What she did to preserve Roy’s heritage is something I’ve never seen,” said Mike Curb, chairman of Curb Records, who worked with Mrs. Orbison to release a compilation album of music that Curb and Orbison co-wrote for films. Curb was a longtime friend.
“She was the consummate person in preserving Roy’s image,” Curb said.

Writers discovered

Mrs. Orbison also turned her focus to developing new songwriters for Still Working Music, personally signing Nashville songwriters Liz Rose, Billy Burnette and Tommy Lee James — all of whom went on to fame with No. 1 hits for country artists.
“I think I was in a cab in New York when she called me and said she was not going to let me off the phone until I signed a deal with her,” said Rose, the co-writer behind Taylor Swift hits such as “You Belong with Me,” which was published by Still Working. “She was persuasive and had so many great ideas for songwriters. And you couldn’t say ‘no’ to her.”
Still Working won BMI’s 2010 Song of the Year Award for “You Belong with Me.”
In 2009, Mrs. Orbison turned her hand to a new product line, launching a fragrance called Pretty Woman Perfume.
“Barbara could have taught a Harvard Business School course in global branding,” said BMI President and CEO Del Bryant.
Mrs. Orbison also was known for her love of parties, a social butterfly who when not jetting around the globe for business was often seen at Nashville parties and awards shows.
Noted for her physical beauty, she also was remembered for her German accent applied to affectionate nicknames like “baby” used to prop up the sometimes-fragile egos of songwriters.
“I’ve never met such a strong-willed woman who would literally change a room when she walked in,” said Fletcher Foster, a senior manager at Red Light Management.
Mrs. Orbison will be buried next to her husband at Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles. A celebration of life will be held at an undetermined date at BMI.

Interview with Rachael Johnson

Interview with Rachael Johnson

Lamitschka:  Music has many new fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who has never seen or heard you?

Rachael Johnson: As a child, I was raised listening to my mother's favorite traditional country songs and my father's most adored classic rock hits, which I have incorporated in both my shows and my writing.  With influences ranging from Merle Haggard, Miranda Lambert, Janis Joplin, Eagles and Beatles, new listeners and viewers are sure to enjoy a never seen before, unforgettable performance.

Lamitschka:  How was the last year for you? What were your highlights?

Rachael Johnson: 2011 was a very exciting year for me.  During this past year, my band was named the house band at the world famous, Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, TN.  I also was able to perform at Eddie Montgomery's Steakhouse in Kentucky, tour as far North as Michigan, open for Little Texas in Alabama, visit and perform in my home state, North Carolina, and am on the calendar to perform at the one year anniversay of the Lyrics for Lyric benefit for the Lyric Frizzell Foundation, which is in place to help find a cure for childhood cancer. I have been so blessed this past year and look forward to what the future holds.

Lamitschka:  How did you choose the title for the CD?  Is there a story behind the name?

Rachael Johnson: My CD is titled "There and Now".  This is also the title of the first track on the album.  I wrote the song with my family just after moving to Nashville and it depicts the way of life in my hometown.  I am originally from Wilkes County, North Carolina and take pride in calling the original "Mayberry", home of the world famous Andy Griffith Show, my home.

Lamitschka:  Do you write the songs yourself? If not, how do you go about finding the songs for your CD?

Rachael Johnson: Yes.  I am a songwriter in addition to a singer/performer.  I enjoy writing my own material but am not opposed to singing others' songs.  I am great friends with many writers here in Nashville who have songs that I sing in my own shows.

Lamitschka:  What drives you?

Rachael Johnson: I have many things in my life that drive me in my music including my family, my writing, my shows and MY FANS!!

Lamitschka:  When you get time off, how do you like to relax?

Rachael Johnson: I have always been very family oriented and enjoy spending time with my family in my time off.  I was so blessed to have my family move to Nashville three years ago with me and love spending every open moment with all of them!

Lamitschka:  Is there any place you haven't played that you would like to?

Rachael Johnson: I would definitely love to tour Germany, and Europe in general.  I want to touch as many lives as possible with my music and, ultimately, I would love to play world-wide!

Lamitschka:  What can your fans expect to see when they see you in concert?

Rachael Johnson: I perform both an intimate acoustic show and an electrifying full band show. Both shows include country, rock, blues and original music so everyone in the crowd leaves happy with an amazing entertainment experience!

Lamitschka:  Many music fans today get their information about artists online. Do you have your own website and what will fans find there?

Rachael Johnson: Fans can find my website at www.rachaeljohnson.com.  Here they can explore my biography, tour dates, photographs/videos, merchandise and much more!

Lamitschka:  Tell us about the fan club and how people can join it.

Rachael Johnson: There are multiple ways listeners can become fans of my music.  One major way is to visit my Facebook and "Like" my FanPage: www.facebook.com/rachaeljohnsonmusic.
Also, I am active on Twitter: www.twitter.com/rachaelselene and ReverbNation: www.reverbnation.com/rachaeljohnson.

HANK WILLIAMS JR. SOLD-OUT CONCERT

SOLD-OUT CONCERT BY LEGENDARY HANK WILLIAMS JR.
RAISES $75,000 FOR THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME®
AND MUSEUM

Hank Williams Jr.NASHVILLE, Tenn., December 7, 2011 – Legendary artist Hank Williams Jr. capped the four-year run of the exhibition Family Tradition: The Williams Family Legacy just as he opened it: with a powerful solo acoustic performance spiked with personal memories.  The sold-out December 6 concert, a benefit for the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, raised $75,000.

Williams also announced that many of the artifacts he loaned to the exhibit would stay in the museum and its archives.  “I’m going to work with them and leave quite a few of these items here—where they should be,” he said.

Highlights of the 90-minute show included Williams’ hits “A Country Boy Can Survive,” “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound”  and “The Blues Man” (upon which he was joined by his youngest son, Sam), as well as several tunes from a forthcoming new CD, scheduled for a March 2012 release.  The concert also included a generous helping of classic material by his father and his heroes, most notably Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.

Special guests in the audience included Jessi Colter, her son Shooter Jennings and Jamey Johnson. The event also became a family celebration, with Williams’ wife, Mary Jane, his daughters Hilary and Holly and son Sam in the audience.

After the concert, Williams greeted audience members and posed for pictures in the Ford Theater. A reception followed in the Hall of Fame Rotunda, and fans received a signed poster commemorating the exhibit as they left the building.

Family Tradition opened on March 28, 2008.  Originally scheduled to close on December 31, 2009, the exhibit—which offers an intimate, behind-the-scenes portrait of a great American musical dynasty—became the most popular and acclaimed exhibition in the museum’s history and was extended through December 31, 2011.

GRAMMY NOMINEE THOMPSON SQUARE WINS THREE AWARDS

GRAMMY NOMINEE THOMPSON SQUARE WINS THREE AWARDS AT FAN-VOTED
FOX’s 2nd ANNUAL AMERICAN COUNTRY AWARDS

Break-Out Country Act of 2011 Wins
“Single of the Year By a Group,” “Single of the Year By a New Artist,”
“Music Video of the Year By a New Artist”

(LAS VEGAS, NV – Dec. 6, 2011) -- Grammy nominated duo Thompson Square proved to be a triple threat at FOX’s 2nd Annual American Country Awards on Monday night. The fan-voted country music awards show, held live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, showered the chart-topping husband/wife duo with awards for Single of the Year by a Group, Single of the Year by a New Artist and Music Video of the Year by a New Artist for their #1 smash, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.”
Stoney Creek Records’ Thompson Square ended the evening as the second most honored artist at the awards – tying with superstar and American Idol alum Carrie Underwood.
Keifer and Shawna Thompson accepted the three awards after performing the ACA and Grammy nominated single on the live broadcast as the cameras showed hundreds of fans singing along and even embracing during what has become Country music’s anthem of 2011, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.”
“For our very first awards to be determined by the fans is incredibly special,” said Keifer.  “It means so much to us because they’re the ones who buy our music and buy our concert tickets. They’re the reason we do this.”
“Our fans are the bomb-diggidy!” exclaimed Shawna.  “We never expected any of this and for the fans to be the ones to give this to us is pretty sweet. Plus, now I can take the Telecaster guitar off layaway that Keifer had asked for this Christmas  - because he just got three!”
The ACA wins come just days after Thompson Square was recognized by GRAMMY voters with nominations for both Best Country Song and Best Country Duo/ Group Performance of the Year for, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.”
The ACA wins and GRAMMY nominations round out what has been a breakout year for Thompson Square – who pounded the pavement for 15 years in the music industry before landing a record deal with Benny Brown’s small independent label Stoney Creek Records (sister label to indie Broken Bow Records and home to Jason Aldean).  The past 12 months have seen the release of the duo’s debut album, the release of their Platinum-plus selling single, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” which reached #1 on the Billboard and Mediabase Country radio charts, the Billboard Heat Seekers Chart, spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Country Digital Soundscan Chart and was the #1 Country Ringtone for 12 weeks straight. Additionally, the 2011 American Music Award nominee for New Artist of the Year is also the only duo to reach #1 on CMT’s Top 50 Artist Chart in 2011.
Thompson Square has performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, Fox & Friends, NBC’s The Better Show” and Fox’s Summer Concert Series, as well as been featured in USA Weekend’s “Who’s Hot in Hollywood,” Entertainment Weekly, People Country, the Associated Press, MSN Wonderwall, Country Weekly, Southwest Spirit Magazine, USA Today, The Washington Post and Billboard.  2011 also found Thompson Square nominated for multiple CMA and CMT Awards.
The duo’s follow-up single, "I Got You," is cresting Top 5 at Country Radio.  After playing to over one million fans this year on the Jason Aldean “My Kinda Party Tour,” Thompson Square will join Lady Antebellum on the road for their Own The Night World Tour 2012 on January 27 in Tulsa, OK.

Next up, Thompson Square performs as part of Great American Country’s (GAC) Christmas in the Black Hills.  Hosted by Big & Rich, the holiday concert special was shot at various locations around historic Deadwood, South Dakota.  Christmas in the Black Hills premieres on GAC on Monday, Dec. 12 at 8 pm ET/ 7 pm CT.
The 54th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Feb. 12, 2012, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT)

Matt Flinner Trio Blurs the Lines Between Jazz, Bluegrass and Avant-Garde on Winter Harvest Out January 31st

The Matt Flinner Trio has mastered the craft of composing music “on the go.” The group practices a unique approach—writing in hotel rooms, dressing rooms, on airplanes and in the back of tour vans—and debuting the new pieces the same night. Sonically founded in bluegrass, jazz and American acoustic music, the virtuosic collaboration between esteemed mandolinist Matt Flinner, guitarist Ross Martin and bassist Eric Thorin, is a finely tuned composition machine.  Culling the best from the over two hundred tunes in their repertoire, the trio is releasing Winter Harvest, a road-crafted sequel to their 2009 release, Music Du Jour.

“We’re building on what we started with Music Du Jour, debuting tunes the day they were written. But I think Winter Harvest is a more mature CD; we’ve done close to seventy of these shows now, so we’re getting to choose fifteen tunes out of two hundred and six. We wanted to choose the few tunes that really defined the group and where we’d gone.”

Stylistically, the group is self-defined as “deeply-rooted new acoustic music,” and Flinner himself “blurs the lines between jazz and bluegrass, traditional and avant-garde (Associated Press).” Originally a banjo player, Flinner won the National Banjo Contest at Winfield Kansas in 1990 and then, as he mastered the mandolin, returned and took the same prize the following year for that instrument. Flinner mastered the bluegrass style and genre and was driven to seek greater degrees of musical maturity through jazz studies. “Bluegrass and jazz are both improvisational and truly American,” says Flinner. “We strive to advance the (bluegrass) genre and do new things with it, hopefully creating a unique form out of other uniquely American forms.”

Winter Harvest is the next chapter in the Matt Flinner Trio canon. Flinner comments that this collection is “not jazz, not bluegrass, and not world music, but it’s some kind of weird combination of all those things. These are the tunes that we felt were not trying to copy one of these other genres, but the ones that achieved a blend of the genres in an organic way.”

Inspired by the expansive American landscape and the conversation that evolves in the back of a tour van, tune and title subject matter were greatly varied. The album opening “Raji’s Romp” is a playful tribute to the first career touchdown made by B.J. Raji of the Green Bay Packers to win the NFC championship in January 2011, while the dreamy “Bitterroot” was written by guitarist Ross Martin and rehearsed by the band all in the half hour before a performance because Martin hadn’t managed to write his tune earlier that day. “The tunes are inspired by necessity as much as anything, I guess!” laughs Flinner.

The band’s conversational melodic exchanges, harmonic counterpoint and rhythmic precision are beautifully engaging and complex, with each instrument highlighted and voiced to suit the puzzle piece-like song structures. Whether doubling the melody in bass and mandolin or expressing a unison rhythmic motif, the trio is unmatched in their execution of style. The album’s special guest featured Flinner’s son Lucas who contributed the auxiliary percussive sounds to the track “The Stumbling Bro.” At four years old, Lucas used his destructive expertise to smash bottles and drop various objects in front of the microphones. Says Flinner of his son’s first studio session, “Like a Nashville pro, Lucas came in and nailed it.”

The Matt Flinner Trio will be on tour Spring 2012 promoting and performing selections from Winter Harvest. They will continue to write new compositions on the road, further pioneering their signature style of American roots music.
