Christina Perri: Single: Jar of Hearts

Christina Perri

Single: Jar of Hearts

Carlos Baute: Album: Amartebien

Carlos Baute

Album: Amartebien

OST/Various

Album: Conan The Barbarian 3D (Music From The Motion Picture)

Steel Guitar News

Hello fellow players,

This newsletter will be answering questions from you readers. Dave Anderson in southern California wants to know what my early guitars were that I learned to play on. Well, first of all, since I was an extremely broke little boy at the time, everything I got was either given to me by my father or uncle.

My very first guitar was a Sears Silvertone selling for about $150 at that time. No case, sounded fine but I was sure looking forward to my next one which was a double neck 8 string per neck National, but it had no legs and I didn’t have a stand for it. What I really wanted was a Fender Dual Professional or a triple would’ve been okay, but this guitar never materialized in my early life.

However, my uncle had a single neck Epiphone and a double neck Epiphone that he very cleverly made into a triple neck with one pedal, which was the main staple of my learning for several years and until I got into the Air Force.

While in the Air Force, I bought a triple neck Fender Stringmaster that already had a homemade pedal on the middle neck that went from E to A. This guitar worked pretty well and held until I could get out of the Air Force and got a professional job working in Hobbs, New Mexico with an incredible band where everybody in it was a star. All were well-known players. I was trying to replace Tom Morrell on that job. He moved to Dallas to work with the Starlighters.

>From there months later I also went to Dallas and continued fighting the horribly junky guitar that I had. I was way out of step with the times. Then while on a playing stint in Colorado Springs, I made enough money to buy a Fender 1000, then a triple neck Bigsby and there was no holding me back from that point on.

I’ll always recommend that any new player get as fine a guitar as he can afford from the beginning. I’m sure that my playing would have blossomed sooner if I would have had better guitars from the beginning.

The next question. How did I learn the things that I learned in the beginning? This question has been asked me many times by many different players. How did you actually learn?

One important thing that I did was carry a compact reel to reel tape recorder. Norelco I believe, mid sixties. I would go to hear the finest bands that I could find in Dallas, take the recorder home and play along with it and copy the steel players down the n’th degree. So today I owe much of my playing ability to Maurice Anderson, Tom Morrell and Billy Braddy.

These were guys that I could record on the spot in Dallas where I was living at the time and if I got stumped with something, I could ask them personally and they would show me exactly what they were doing. One hundred percent of what I learned this way was C6th. I applied very little of it to the E9th that I heard on the radio, but I will have to admit that a friend of mine from Duncan, Oklahoma named Ralph Mooney was very inspirational for my E9th playing abilities. He claimed he got most of his knowledge and experience from a California player named Fuzzy Owens.

Now for the next question. Do you stay in touch with these players that helped you with your basic roots? My answer is many of them are no longer with us. Ralph just passed on and left us as did Billy Braddy and Tom Morrell.

Wonderful friend Norm Hamlet who is now a fellow Hall of Fame member called yesterday and he says he’s still with Merle Haggard and loving the job as much as ever, claiming Merle is not just an employer, but a great friend.

Today you don’t have to carry a reel to reel recorder. Today we have play-along tracks that we can buy to learn from. As a matter of fact, I have a series of tracks that I have produced that I recorded with Nashville’s very finest top name recording musicians. You know, the same guys that you’ve heard on hit Nashville tunes for the past thirty plus years, the guys that play the real country music.

These tracks are standard country tunes we all need to know in the keys that they are most normally played. It’s the new tech way to learn great old songs.

Jeff Surratt, builder of the beautiful new Sho-Pro steel guitar came to see me yesterday with an English steel guitar player visitor named Spencer Scott. As I’m sitting here thinking about all the steel players we’ve lost, I am also thinking about these new whiz-kids that are replacing us. They are out on the road today making history, raising Cain, starting trouble and creating stories that they’ll be telling the younger guys about later in life years. Sound familiar?

But rest assured, there’s a new wave coming. Players like Randall Curry, Eddie Dunlap, Chad Udeen, Travis Toy, Tyler Hall, Steve Poluchek (hey Steve, sorry for the way I’m butchering your last name here) and many others.

There is a wonderful undercurrent of steel players in Nashville that are flying under the radar and are making a really good living doing what they love most, playing steel guitar. Players like Stu Basore, Ron Elliott, Cal Sharp, Weldon Myrick, Billy Poe, Tommy Hannun, Mike Cass, Joe Rogers, Jeff Surratt, Tommy Killin, Allen Rudd, Lynn Owsley and Dave Robbins.

These guys may not be right in your face all the time, however they are all great players that are doing well here in town. I feel these guys deserve recognition as much as the highly visible players do. Of course, there are more.

And then we have all the great road players. So as you can see, there are many good steel players working and living in Nashville, Tennessee. If you are striving to be a professional steel guitarist, buy the very best steel guitar you can afford. If you buy from me, I’ll give you the best price I can, plus give you a great trade-in when you move up and you’ll get the best service around. We can take care of you so you can make money.

Check out our monthly specials at http://www.steelguitar.net/monthlyspecials.html and we’ll try to save you a lot of money.

John Doyle Announces Shadow and Light,

Irish Guitar Virtuoso John Doyle
Announces Shadow and Light,
New Album on Compass Records

John Doyle - Shadow and Light
Dublin-born guitarist and singer-songwriter John Doyle announced his upcoming solo release Shadow and Light Compass Records, available September 27th. The album tradition through his virtuosity on the guitar and with new original songs on his upcoming release

Doyle was exposed to music at an early age through his family. A dare from a childhood friend and lack of formal training allowed him to develop his signature left-hand finger picking style – a style that informed the sound of the first Irish-American super-group Solas. Since then, Doyle has continued to hone his craft on the road and in the studio, earning a Grammy nomination for his collaboration with fiddler Liz Carroll in 2010 on Double Play (Compass Records).   He has also collaborated with some of the most revered names in the genre including Heidi Talbot, Tim O’Brien and fellow Solas founder Karan Casey and, from 2008-2010, served as band leader for folk icon Joan Baez on her worldwide tour.

On Shadow and Light, Doyle pays tribute to Irish musical tradition while forging a path of his own on a set of largely original songs characterized by his rhythmic and harmonic genius.  History and stories pervade the album’s eleven tracks from the first lyrics of the album opener “Clear the Way” - a translation from the old Gaelic “Faugh A Ballagh” which was the rallying cry of the Irish Brigade in the American Civil War. The song tells the story of the “Fighting 69th,” and their tragic battle at Fredricksburg, Virginia where their numbers were reduced from over 1600 to less than 300 by another predominantly Irish Confederate Regiment.

Another stand out track is “The Arabic,” named for the ship Doyle’s grandfather boarded to immigrate to America. A German submarine attacked the SS Arabic and Doyle’s grandfather was plucked out of the flotsam by a rescue boat and sent back to Ireland. “It’s all true, as far as I know,” smiles the boyish Doyle.  Another family ode, “Tribute to Donal Ward/ The Curraghman” is an instrumental homage to Doyle’s rustic uncle Donal Ward and serves as the perfect showcase for Doyle’s virtuosic finger picking style.  Family is a recurring theme; the album also includes “Little Sparrow,” a song for Doyle’s daughter that has been regularly featured in his live set.  Throughout the album Doyle is accompanied by a cast of some of the most stellar players in acoustic music including Tim O’Brien (vocals, mandolin), Alison Brown (banjo), Kenny Malone (percussion), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Todd Phillips (bass), John Williams (accordion), Pete Grant (lap steel) and Michael McGoldrick (uillean pipes and flute).

When not at home in Asheville, NC, Doyle tours globally, and has appeared frequently at many of the taste-maker festivals in acoustic music including Celtic Connections in Glasgow, the Dublin Irish Music Festival in Dublin OH, MerleFest, Milwaukee Irish Festival, Sebastopol Celtic Festival, and the All-Ireland Fleadh.  In addition to his work as a solo artist, he also performs regularly with other starts of the genre Andy Irvine, John Williams, Karan Casey, Liz Carroll and others.  Doyle has also appeared on nationally syndicated radio shows including Prairie Home Companion and Mountain Stage and, in 2009, performed for President Obama in honor of St Patrick’s Day.

Skylar Grey
Fünf Deutschlandtermine: Skylar Grey kommt im Oktober auf Tour mit Bruno Mars +++ Die Single „Invisible“ erscheint am 30. September!

I Need A Doctor live präsentierte.

05. Oktober – Hamburg, Sporthalle
06. Oktober – Berlin, Max-Schmeling-Halle
08. Oktober – München, Zenith
15. Oktober – Oberhausen, König Pilsner Arena
16. Oktober – Frankfurt, Jahrhunderthalle

ROOTS AND WINGS marks Terri Clark's second self-released and self-produced independent release on BareTrack Records. It has a mainstream, contemporary country sound but also serves up some traditional material. After losing her mother to cancer in 2010, to whom she was very close, Clark taking her advice to stay tethered to her roots has since bought a home in Canada to be around her relations and close friends back in her native country. Terri who has since felt a new sense of freedom, living life to the full after observing her mothers battle and succumbing to the disease said - “My mom too I feel has a set of wings in heaven and looks out after me. And she flew to the next place”. The 10-track album which had a digital release in July 26, 2011 and now a physical one this week on Sept 13, 2011 therefore straddles those two underlying themes.
Clark co-wrote 9 of the tracks which were recorded at studios both in Nashville and Toronto calling on some top-class pickers which include: B.James Lowry (acoustic guitar), Brent Mason (electric guitar), Bryan Sutton (banjo, mandolin and acoustic guitar), Glen Worff (bass), Dan Dugmore (steel), Russ Paul (steel), Steve Nathan (keyboards), Andrea Zonn and Stuart Duncan (fiddle, strings).

With rasping driving guitar and crashing drums the take-your-head-off opener ‘Wrecking Ball’ written with Tia Sillers (I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack) and fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Victoria Banks finds a woman on a mission and nothing is going to get in her way – Look out! Composed just 10 days before finishing the album this rocker finds a wild and untamed woman in demolition-derby-relationship-mode as Terri sings: “No holding me back, no slowing me down / When I want what I want and I want it right now/ On a cast iron chain, headed your way/ You’ll know I ain’t messin’ around/ Cuz I’m a wreckin’ ball”.

The mid-tempo ‘Breakin' Up Thing’ is one of 4 co-writes with Kristen Hall (founding member of the group Sugarland ) their song camaraderie stemmed from a residence at Clarks Nashville home after the historic floods in May 2010. The songs character who is left spinning and lonely learns the art of break-up from an expert in the field, who, leaves without a sound, no respect and remains unscathed from the experience: “I’m just a diamond in your crown, I could learn a thing or two watching you, Got that breakin’ up thing down”.

On the other excellent Clark/Hall songs the face paced first single ‘Northern Girl’ (see single review) encompasses how Terri feels about her beloved homeland, where she grew up and has now returned to. The soft, rootsy and Celtic flavoured ‘Beautiful and Broken’ tells of an unconditional love after enduring both good and bad times with a partner. Through the carnage and chaos of that relationship they can still call on each other as friends. ‘Flowers in Snow ‘was the first song they crafted for this project and on this magnificent album closer accordion and steel waft like a north wind over a frosty personal liaison. After countless heartaches love is squandered and will never blossom and the couple are at odds to finally admit that to themselves: “And still wonder why it won’t grow, we’re planting flowers in snow

From its wispy beginning the outstanding ‘The One’ written with Tom Shapiro and Jim Collins slowly builds. With heart-on-my-sleeve-emotion Clark plays the role as a single person who is prepared to wait for as long as it takes for that special someone to enter her life than settle for less despite the social pressures from onlookers – “She must not be lookin’ all that hard, They’ve all got their stories of why I’m still alone, But the only truth that matters is my own” – Despite the lonely nights this lady craves for a love she can’t live without, kisses to burn her lips and a touch so affectionate that will pound her heart down to her fingertips.

The stone-walled weeper ‘Lonesome's Last Call’ turns back the country clock that’s hung on the barroom wall. Two lonesome souls in their twilight years, one longing to dance, met by chance and re-kindle a love they thought had passed by. With steel and triple fiddle and the additional backing vocals from Sonya Isaccs this waltz with its Hank Williams vibes could have been unearthed from a 1930’s vault. It was in fact written by Clark at the start of the 90’s with Jim Rushing after she had just moved to Music City.

The mid-tempo number ‘The Good Was Great’ penned with Tia Sillers and Ontario recording artist Deric Ruttan with an honest sentiment picks out the juicy bones from a spent relationship remembering those times that brought sweet and fond memories rather than the hurt, slamming of doors and countless goodbyes that left a bad taste in the mouth - “The bad was bad baby, but the good was great

The deeply touching ballad ‘Smile’ is dedicated by Terri to her best friend and late mother Linda aged 60. Written with Grammy nominated writer Karyn Rochelle (‘Georgia Rain’ and ‘Let The Wind Chase You’- Trisha Yearwood) it tells the tale of childhood memories of first days at school to an 18-year old when Terri driven to the bright lights of Tennessee by her mother was living the dream for her having played folk music in coffeehouses herself. After three long years witnessing her battle Terri sat by her bedside during those painful last days was told by her - “I want you to smile”. Complemented by the crystal harmonies of neighbour Alison Krauss its delicate ambience makes for a standout, heartfelt tearjerker.

The current single and outside track ‘We're Here for a Good Time’ written by vocalist Ramon McGuire and guitarist Brian Smith is a terrific re-work of their hit which gained a #12 place on the Canadian Singles chart back in 1977 with the band Trooper (YouTube video). This song which made an impression on her growing up perfectly suits Clark’s feel-good side as she puts her own country stamp on it. It sums up her philosophy this last year in that life cannot be taken for granted but enjoyed to the full: We’re here for a good time, Not a long time (not a long time), So have a good time, The sun can’t shine everyday ( Behind the scenes video)

Terri is back to her very best on this outing proving she has both the soulful roots and songs that fly to entertain any audience.

On September 12, 2011 the Alberta-born brunette was once more named Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA’s) in Hamilton. (See Press Release)

GUY PENROD

"Male Vocalist of the Year" Nomination in ICM Awards Ceremonies Cap Fall 2011

Nashville, Tennessee (September 14, 2011) - Guy Penrod strikes a strong vocal note of encouragement to the everyday American worker in his powerful new single "More Power To Ya" being delivered to country radio this week via Play MPE and CDX Vol. #531.

The third single from his much acclaimed BREATHE DEEP CD release, Penrod's choice of the Jon Mabe/Jason Matthews written "More Power To Ya" continues to engage country listeners with a 'faith & family' values message that delves deep into the heart of the nation's 'can do' spirit.

"I chose the song because of its down-to-earth grit when it comes to making it through life," notes Guy.  "Life often deals us what seems at times to be an unfair hand.  But the message in this great song is that the things that truly matter to us, our families-wives, kids, parents, friends--in short the people we love--are what's most important. We still get up and get out there and fight to provide for those we love. Things are especially challenging for the American work force at this time, but the numbers still reflect that we, as a people, are going to do what it takes to care for those we love and that grit deserves our applause and encouragement....to which I say, more power to ya!"

With the unveiling of his new single and fall 2011 concert schedule, Guy Penrod remains one of the most "audience connective" live performers in the music industry.  For country fans, his 2010 debut solo tour in support of  BREATHE DEEP put a fresh face" on the unmistakable voice that help propel The Gaither Vocal Band to multi-Grammy wins and multi-million unit record sales. He has to date performed before audiences of more than six million concert-goers in the U.S. alone.  The release of BREATHE DEEP set Penrod on course to be a centerpiece artist at the CMA Music Festival, tour Europe to introduce the new music, and embark on an ambitious country radio promotional tour that boosted his emerging strength in the genre to six figure sales in 2010.

Guy will cap October with an October 28th appearance/performance at the ICM Faith, Family & Country Awards presentation being held in Nashville at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.  He is nominated in the Male Vocalist of the Year category set to be presented that night.

RAISE A TOAST-DOWN THE HATCH ARRIVES FROM THE DAMN QUAILS!

RAISE A TOAST-DOWN THE HATCH ARRIVES FROM
THE DAMN QUAILS!

598 RECORDINGS LAUNCHES WITH OKLAHOMA’S PHENOMENAL DUO

Nashville, TN-September 14, 2011-New indie label, 598 Recordings, launches this year with the phenomenal duo, The Damn Quails. 598 Recordings is the brainchild of Chance Sparkman and renowned songwriter/musician/producer, Mike McClure.  Sparkman, a successful Oklahoma business man and lifelong country music fan, approached McClure offering a partnership that would provide a new platform for McClure’s multi-leveled music expertise. Knowing that Sparkman would get behind music that needed to be heard, McClure agreed and immediately recruited The Damn Quails as the label’s debut artists. “After hearing their songs backstage at my show in Tecumseh, I knew they had the goods. I asked my bass player/mentor, Tom Skinner, if he was starting a label who he would sign. He said, 'The Damn Quails.' I took that as a sign. ” Sparkman is thrilled about the new venture!  “I decided to challenge myself to conquer the barriers of entry into the music business. I am enjoying the learning process, but most importantly, I look forward to discovering the talent Oklahoma has to offer. With a partner in Mike McClure, 598 Recordings has the resources necessary to be successful.”  598 Recordings will also stand as a go-to resource for new up and coming talent in the area via their YouTube page and the 598 Recordings blog page written by Mike McClure. www.598recordings.com www.facebook.com/598Recordings.  www.youtube.com/598Recordings

Described as a “young band with old souls,” The Damn Quails are a combined effort between singer/songwriters Gabriel Marshall and Bryon White, proud saplings of Oklahoma’s opulent music vegetation. Their debut studio album appropriately titled DOWN THE HATCH will shell out on October 25th to an already mounting fan base desperate to lay hands on this very special release. The album’s first single “Fools Gold” will hit radio on September 25th.  It is a very lucky thing for anyone who considers himself a music aficionado that Bryon and Gabriel would eventually come stool–to-stool in a highly respected ritual among songwriters known as the Song Swap. It was in this survival of the fittest setting where two songwriters, both equally fierce in measure, would set into motion a pairing that resonates a lifetime of compatibility despite its level of humble beginnings.

Backed by the ‘Quail Philharmonic,” The Damn Quails live show spills off the stage with a pooled sound that makes veteran performers stand up and take notice, and on any given night the philharmonic fills to include some of their peers from other bands. After all, the jam is what it is really all about and Bryon admits that they have never performed a song the same way twice.  DOWN THE HATCH is produced by the veteran combo of Mike McClure and Joe Hardy. McClure’s producing/recording credits that include Cross Canadian Ragweed, Turnpike Troubadours, Stoney LaRue, Jerry Jeff Walker, Gary P. Nunn and Lloyd Maines. Hardy currently runs Billy Gibbons’ Foam Box Studio and has recorded everyone from ZZ Top to The Replacements to Steve Earle. The enormity of talent combined in this debut release is staggering. From the first sweet sounds of harmonica and fiddle on “Better Place To Stop” to the airy essence of “Mary” to the lonesome call of “California,” The Damn Quails deliver one of the most solid performances of any freshmen album you will ever hear.

BURNS & POE INTRODUCE NATIONWIDE CLASSIFIED CAMPAIGN

BURNS & POE INTRODUCE NATIONWIDE CLASSIFIED CAMPAIGN
---“I NEED A JOB”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (September 14, 2011) –Appealing to the sentiment of many, Blue Steel Records’ Burns & Poe have recently recorded a tune that is certain to speak to all. Written and recorded in all seriousness and some jest,
Keith Burns and Michelle Poe introduce
“I Need A Job.” Addressing one of America’s hottest topics, the track comes “hot off the press” and was conceived as a timely “voice.”

“We have enjoyed unbelievable response when we perform this song live; it’s obvious that it strikes a chord in the heart of our listeners.” Michelle Poe explains. “It's gotten to the point, when talking to fans and friends, where an epidemic of joblessness presents itself. The American Dream, it seems, has been reduced to just making enough money to pay for gas to get to your job and hope it’s still there when you arrive.”

“The song just kind of wrote itself,” Keith Burns adds. “My co-writer, John Ritter, and I knew when we started writing this tune that we were creating a song to voice the frustration, hopelessness and need that many feel. A job means more than just paying the bills; it’s about self-respect, self worth and pride. Working is part of the American way. People don’t want a hand-out, they want a job. It’s not a political issue – it’s an American financial, social and emotional issue.”

Available now on PlayMPE and CDX Vol. 532/9/26/2011, “I Need A Job” (written by Burns and John Ritter) is going for immediate adds. The release will be supported by an “I Need A Job” video submission competition wherein the winning contestant will be employed by the Burns & Poe team for a 30-day period. Details to follow.

The pair, named Music Row Magazine’s “Independent Artist of the Year,” possesses an unparalleled combination of superlative writing augmented with a sound patented by Michelle Poe’s melodious, buttery vocals and Keith Burns’ gritty, soulful, tenor tone. Their self-titled debut 2-disc album was released earlier this year and received high praise from a variety of outlets including Country Weekly; the magazine notes that “the duo exemplifies the magic male-female duos of yesteryear, pairs like George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. Keith Burns and Michelle Poe are a duo for the country music masses.”
