Lucy Angel EP Review – Track by track

Lucy Angel EP Review – Track by track

1. Serious 2. I’ll Be Your Whiskey 3. Only Woman Left 4. Color Love Blue 5. I’d Be Lyin’

GFM 1001
Release Date – 23 November 2010
Time – 20:19

When this self-titled EP arrived it took me some considerable time to remove the shrink-wrap as the cover picture is most certainly appealing, with flowing goldilocks hair and sexy attire their striking looks make for a triple treat. So does the music match this hotness? – Indeed it does!

This 5-track offering is produced by Nashville songwriting prodigy Anthony Smith. He co-writes on 3 of the tracks and is someone who has penned songs in country circles for George Strait (‘Cowboys Like Us’), Tim McGraw (‘Kristofferson’, ‘Kill Myself’), Reba McEntire (‘It Just Has to Be This Way’), Suzy Bogguss ‘How Come You Go to Her’ and Rascal Flatts (‘My Worst Fear’). On this project he has recruited some stellar tunesmiths.

It kicks off with the up-tempo rocker ‘Serious’, which is anything but! It was originally aimed for a male artist, co-writer David Lee Murphy sang the demo and they soon released it could be adapted as a fun girly number. Murphy has country #1’s to his credit with ‘Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not’ (Thompson Square), ‘Big Green Tractor’ (Jason Aldean) along with ‘Living in Fast Forward’ (Kenny Chesney). Chris Wallin whose scored ‘Don’t Blink’, ‘Got A Little Crazy’ (Kenny Chesney) and ‘Famous People’ (Brad Paisley) makes up the song writing trio. Instead of lyin’ on the big ol’ couch, opening some wine and watching a TV movie these ladies are going to leave the roses and candle lights for another night. They’re ready to party, make mama nervous, daddy proud and have fun. Over a palette of the distinctive Hammond sound and driving guitar riffs they cry out – “Were goin’ to paint it up, were gonna burn it down, were gonna party like we own this town!

I’ll be Your Whiskey’, with its gentle acoustic opening and a swampy dobro develops into a gritty vibe and rocky affair. It was written by the prolific writers Hillary Lindsey (Carrie Underwood ‘Jesus Take The Wheel’, Sara Evans ‘A Little Bit Stronger’ , Lady Antebellum ‘American Honey’, Taylor Swift ‘Fearless’, Martina McBride ‘Blessed’, Julie Roberts ‘Men & Mascara’) and Brett James whose songs have been recorded by Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Sara Evans and the UK’s Leona Lewis.
The lead is edgy and the close harmonies are haunting as the woman reaches out to her man in the chorus lines: “I’ll be your whiskey when your dry, I’ll be your water I’ll be your wine”, but points to abuse with “I’ll be the one you love to fight, when your thirsty”. Is the demon drink the result of a relationship gone wrong - “that worn out door has seen enough of your heart breaking”? In desperation the woman demands the bottle be cast out of the window, she’s got the big fix, the remedy that will make him high.

Only Woman Left” is a roll down the window dance carefree catchy number. This is modern high energy country/pop/rock at its best. Written with Sarah Buxton (Keith Urban ‘Stupid Boy’, Sara Evans ‘Never Alone’, and Katie Armiger ‘Kiss Me Now’) this is an immediate attention grabber. It ebbs and flows beautifully with Wilson Phillips-like “oohs” and packs a punch on the chorus. This woman isn’t interested in small talk, flash cars, diamonds or a “random get lucky” kind of guy. She needs a man to love her like she’s the only woman left in the world!

Color Love Blue’ is a gorgeous sweet country heartbreaker, it’s sparse but sparkles. Smith collaborates with renowned BMI songwriter, Carson Chamberlain whose written #1 singles, ‘Love’s Got a Hold On You’, ‘Everything I Love’ (Alan Jackson) and co-wrote the George Strait's chart topper ‘The Best Day’. Lindsay Anderton takes the lead, sung with a quality that brings to mind Martina McBride with silky smooth vocal back up. Spanish guitar, weeping steel and soft percussion combine to brush strokes onto a musical canvas. Reflecting on love gone sour thoughts turn to hands held under a yellow moon, dreams in a field so green and red roses for Valentines that lit up a black sky – ‘The paints about out, down to one color now, so color love blue

The anguish on ‘I’d Be Lyin’ is felt with every heartfelt word. The listener is engaged from its delicate opening with Kate Anderton (Epiphone acoustic/electric mandolin) and the arrangement picks up speed with orchestration underpinned by a heavy guitar riff and a rip roaring solo. After a break-up this woman’s world is left in turmoil, a deep love has changed her. The truth is she’s lonely and hurting and attempts to hold it together: ‘I don’t want someone to hold me that I didn’t spend a few nights crying’. With time she’s climbed the emotionally mountain and those hollow feelings have diminished. Glimpsing in the mirror she recognizes someone who’s now ready to move on.
Get serious, make a date with Lucy Angel and you won’t regret it x

Spotlight on Lucy Angel

Spotlight on Lucy Angel

The group first came to my attention in October 2010 after hearing their track ‘Only Woman Left’. This was included on Hot Disc #142 (Rush Released) the promotional compilations distributed to the country music media in the UK and worldwide. This fabulous song sadly peaked at # 30 on the Hot Disc Chart but thankfully was making waves across the pond with the radio networks. Much to my delight on 25 April 2011 they were featured on Inside Music Row shown on Showcase TV (Sky Channel 201 and Freesat 403) when the lovely Kelly Lynn hooked up with them.

So who is Lucy Angel?
They are a female trio who have been together for a very long time and will be for some considerable period to come because they comprise of the “Anderton clan”, who are mother Kate Anderton and her two daughters Lindsay and Emily.
Kate got into music when she met her husband in college and he entered her for the Wrangler Country Showdown which she duly won. This was a live-broadcast country music talent search show which preceded programmes like American Idol by some 20 years.
Kate fell for country music listening to Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. She subsequently moved to Nashville and has appeared at The Grand Ole Opry in what she describes as “the bad hair era” of the 80’s.

Lindsay first performed at the tender age of 4 years old. When she reached 12 she sang professionally with her mum in another trio then after a move from Arizona to Nashville they formed a duo (see pic). Her introduction to country music was listening to the likes of Ronnie Milsap on Lake Powell trips when cruising down the channel.
When younger sister Emily moved to Music City she didn’t want to sing but would watch mum and older sister perform – “So much in life is about timing and 6 years ago the timing was right and we became a trio” she says. The first show LUCY ANGEL performed in this format was as opening act for Neal McCoy.
The beauty of siblings and family members singing together is of course the unique close harmonies they create and it was the first single which has opened doors - According to Kate. “When we heard it, the oohs were definitely the selling point, and of course, the three part harmony”.

Since October 2010 they have been on radio promotional tours visiting many States, meeting friends and fans and geared up to do some band shows. They have also turned their attention to the Internet, posting up weekly episodes on YouTube known as “Lucy Angel on Safari”. These have been mainly fun adventures but most recently serious ones. Whilst on the road with promotion they took some time out to pay a visit through the tornado ravaged town of Cullman in Alabama. This was to help out a close family friend whose home was destroyed in the disaster, in what was the worst tornado to strike since 1925 - Lucy Angel 'Color Love Blue' (Cullman Tornado Relief) Video. They were overcome by the devastating scenes and presented gas cards to many of the now homeless neighbours.

Recognizing the difficult times families are facing with the recession they are also associated with The Second Harvest which provides many meals for children over the weekends and summer breaks. For those less fortunate Lucy Angel has been collecting food at their shows (hopefully not thrown at them! LOL)

With their attractive looks it’s of no surprise the trio have been turning heads and catching the attention of TV executives in Hollywood. After meetings “the sassy kindred spirits” have been exploring the idea with cable networks of launching a Lucy Angel reality TV show!

Apart from extensive tours in America they have been to Japan and Switzerland for the International Country Festival in Albisgütli, Zurich – Watch on Youtube . They became “China dolls” with 2 trips to Beijing for The International Country Music Week in 2009 - See Myspace Photo and then were honoured as the first Western /American act to sing at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square – See Photo

The new Lucy Angel single, ‘Serious is currently at country radio. To date it has peaked at # 40 on the Music Row Country Breakout Chart . They have some exclusive live performances due at Tootsies Orchid Lounge (June 8 -11, 2011) in Nashville during the CMA Fanfest and then go out on a national tour – check out the website for details.

LeMars, Iowa.....The home of the largest ice cream factory in the world, LeMars, Iowa, is preparing to welcome Fruita, Colorado, resident Joyce Shaffer, to their city.  She is to be inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame, on Saturday, September 3rd.
The Hall of Fame has been in existence since 1976, when Bob Everhart, President of the National Traditional Country Music Association, formed a 501(c)3 non-profit group devoted to the preservation, perpetuation, and performance of America's 'rural' country music.  "We called it the National Traditional Country Music Association, and we had to find a way to better define what we do," Everhart said recently, "because the country music we represent is quite different than the country music we mostly hear coming from Nashville these days.  For the past 36 years, we have been working hard to not only capture the essence of what country music once was, but to keep it alive, and honor those that have made significant contributions to the genre in recent years.  Therefore we have taken up the word 'rural' to better define what our 'country' music is all about."
Country music in Everhart's opinion might be 'rural,' but the contributors come from all walks of life, and offer many different styles from the past.  "We just never cease to be amazed at the wonderful parade of country music performers that come to our annual convention-festival," Everhart added.  "It's actually the largest old-time acoustic music event in the entire upper Midwest, and includes great participation from bluegrass, folk, and even rag-time and old-time fiddle music performers, as well as country.  By keeping it acoustic, we are able to better present what country music sounded like during it's golden age.  We're also able to present more stages for the performers.  We're now utilizing ten stages.  Can you imagine that, ten stages running 9am to midnight every day for seven days, and we are still having difficulties getting everyone on that wants to be on.  Performers of America's classic country, bluegrass, and folk music come from around the world."
The 2011 dates for this unique gathering of thousands of old-time country, bluegrass, and folk music fans is August 29 through September 4th, at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds in LeMars, Iowa.  "We have several really large buildings to use for the performances," Everhart added, "our main-stage building is even air conditioned.  It seats 1,000 comfortably, and the next door adjoining building, which we call the dance-hall, is equally as large.  Last year we had Bill Anderson from the Grand Ole Opry for Hall of Fame induction, and he had to do two shows, one on the main stage, and then another on the dance hall stage.  The legendary Patti Page was with us last year as well, and it was a similar experience.  This year Jim Ed Brown, Helen Cornelius, and Jeannie Seely are with us from the Grand Ole Opry, and we have several performers who were on the Louisiana Hayride.  The legendary Bonnie Guitar will be with us too.  Ms. Guitar recorded "Dark Moon" a number of years ago, but is perhaps best known for her tutoring two groups to fame, the Fleetwoods and the Ventures.  Neither of these groups are 'country' music oriented, but it was Bonnie Guitar that showed them how to play unique and different methods and styles on the guitar.  Super-pickers find their way to our corn-field too," Everhart added.  "We're not really in a corn-field, but we could be.  Eddie Pennington, a 'Merle Travis' style guitar picker will be with us, as will the famous Tut Taylor, who performs on the resonator guitar.  Both of these pickers come from Kentucky.  Oklahoma fiddler Jake Simpson, and three-time world champion flat-picker from the Winfield, Kansas, competitions, Jason Shaw will also be on hand.  Add to that about 600 more pickers and players, and you have a good idea of what this unique event is all about."
"Joyce Shaffer of Fruita, Colorado, is also unique," Everhart added.  "She has attained a sizable fan base in her home-state of Colorado, and devotes much of her music to the composition and style of many of the golden classic country performers and recording artists, and songwriters of traditional country music.  She grew up as the ninth child of a dirt-poor sharecropper, then married young and raised her children amid tremendous hardship, pretty much the same story as the most successful of country music songwriters.  Today Ms. Shaffer is singing an anthem to American voters.  In her newest project "Takin' Back Our Country,' she is fighting for the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  According to Shaffer, "I speak and sing on behalf of millions of Americans who are afraid of losing everything to the current economic crises, and the government take over of businesses, health care, and private property.  My only son, Jeff Shaffer served in Desert Storm, and I'm so thankful he come home in one piece, but many haven't.  Ken Dravis of Aspen Leaf Recording Studio is my music producer, as well as my guitar player.  We also used some other musicians among them Randy Utterback on guitar and fiddle.  When I hear someone playing my records and people like them, I am already successful and proud.  I thank God for helping me find the good people, and the right words, to make it happen."
Ms. Shaffer will join a large contingency of Hall of Fame inductees at this year's ceremonies.  According to Everhart, "Joyce Shaffer is scheduled to be on our main stage on Saturday, September 3rd, at 5pm, for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.  I can assure anyone who has never heard this woman, or seen her perform, she will receive a standing ovation from a huge crowd of fans.  Her words are what our festival is all about, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  We do it with good old-time absolutely American country music."
"We have some of the best mid-west corn-fed beef steaks in the world at our food court too," added Everhart.  "Super good food, super good music, and super good interaction between musicians make for a lot of impromptu 'jam sessions.'  There's also a Tipi Village where a lot of pickers hang-out, and we also have a Pioneer Exposition of Arts, Crafts, and Rural American Lifestyle for those that need extra things to do.  What profits we might make goes to the Pioneer Music Museum which is located in Anita, Iowa, and is home to 'America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame.'  Great RV camping with electricity ($12 per day), and we caution all visitors to bring lawn chairs for their own comfort.  Admission is $15 per day, per person (which includes all ten stages and all celebrities) or a 7-day open gate pass for $60 per person, which includes all ten stages of entertainment.'
More information about the festival, and the activities of the National Traditional Country Music Association can be found at their website:

In April, multi-platinum and award-winning country singer/songwriter JO DEE MESSINA announced her “A MILLION DOORS” campaign to help raise $2.3 million for a non-profit school in Nashville, the Holy Trinity Montessori, by donating proceeds from the sale of a new song “Carry Me.”  She was also working on setting up a concert tour to benefit the school--and a Saturday, June 25 show in Pittsburg, Kansas was confirmed, but funds from that show are now earmarked to help victims of the recent violent tornados that devastated the region.
After learning that promoter Al Zar lived in Joplin, MO and lost everything he had, JO DEE and KATE RILEY, the head of the Montessori school, decided the Red Cross needed the money more than their school.  “After the tornados, I reached out to Al, knowing they hit close to where we were having the concert,” says JO DEE. “He lost everything.  When I told Kate about this, she was saddened and suggested that if the shows do happen that they should give the money to him.  When my management offered this to Al, he said, ‘Instead of me, why don't we offer the proceeds to all the people in Joplin, by donating proceeds to the Joplin Red Cross?’ And so we are!”
As for her benevolent activities and neighborly attitude, JO DEE says, “I feel it’s important to ‘be there’ for each other.  At times I spread myself a bit too thin trying to help everyone.  But, God has blessed me with the passion and compassion to want to make a difference.  When I meet my maker face to face, he won't care how many records I've sold.  He'll want to know what I did with my life that mattered.  To me, helping really matters.”
Stay tuned for more JO DEE tour dates.

The 25th Annual Music Row Ladies Golf Tournament has announced that their annual event will be held Monday, July 25 at Old Natchez Country Club in Nashville.  The longest-running charitable event on Music Row, the tournament has raised over $1.5 million for United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee.  Golfers can support the cause by registering a team as well as bidding on exciting auction items.  Other sponsorship possibilities exist for those preferring not to play golf.
Reservations are $150 per golfer and $100 per caddie and are by invitation only.
Along with Tim McGraw’s renewed support, additional sponsors include ASCAP, Kenny Chesney, City National Bank, McGhee Entertainment, UBS Financial Services, UMG Nashville and MSO PR.

Featuring original songs and collaborations with some of country music’s top artists, Meade’s debut will be exclusively available in all Target stores and iTunes

Look for Meade at CMA Music Fest and much more in the coming weeks

NASHVILLE, TN (June 1, 2011) – Robin Meade, popular host of “Morning Express with Robin Meade” on HLN, will release her musical debut, Brand New Day, on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, exclusively through Target and iTunes.  Other stars appearing on the album as duet partners or background vocalists include Celebrity Apprentice winner John Rich, American Idol's Bo Bice, Kix Brooks, and Sarah Buxton. Nashville heavy-hitter Victoria Shaw (Lady Antebellum) produced the album, which includes songs Meade co-wrote with Shaw, Rich, Hall of Fame writer Gary Burr, singer-songwriter Billy Dean, Matt Lopez of Due West and others.

Meade’s new album offers fans a glimpse into her musical roots and aspirations. Her love of music was fostered from the pews of church as the daughter of an Ohio preacher, and has evolved to include a passion for writing and performing country music.

“Songwriting, like journalism, is about telling people’s stories, the things that make up their lives: their loves and losses, their passions and dreams, their challenges and victories. It was important to me that this album reflect my respect for country music and my desire to convey the human condition through song. I'm chomping at the bit to share this side of myself with the world.”

No stranger to the stage, Meade has performed with Kenny Chesney, Richard Marx, David Foster, John Rich and pianist Jim Brickman, among others, and received  a standing ovation at the Grand Ole Opry.

BRAND NEW DAY Track Listing:

Meade will connect with both longtime and new fans during her first CMA Music Fest appearance in Nashville (June 9-12). She'll perform on the Lay’s Plaza Stage Sunday, June 12 at 11:45am central time, play in the annual City of Hope Softball Challenge Saturday June 11, duet with Bo Bice Sunday June 12 on the Lay's Stage at 5:45pm central time, and sign copies of her new album 'Brand New Day' at her convention center booth June 9, 10, & 11.

In May, Meade co-hosted CMT’s “Disaster Relief Concert” that re-aired on HLN to raise money for recent storm and flood victims. She also hosted a behind-the-scenes special that featured her conversations with other country artists helping raise money for the American Red Cross.
Meade's New York Times bestselling book, 'Morning Sunshine! How to Radiate Confidence and Feel It Too', was also just re-released in paperback.

Meade can be seen Monday through Friday from 6am-Noon eastern hosting "Morning Express with Robin Meade" on HLN.

Revving Up The Music Industry & The Race Track

Nashville, TN (June 1, 2011) – Scott Borchetta, President & CEO of The Big Machine Label Group, chalked up another #1 – but this time it’s not on an airplay or sales chart as it comes at the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, The Indy 500. The racing aficionado sponsored driver Dan Wheldon in the No. 98 William Rast/aigo/Curb/Big Machine/Forsythe Solutions Dallara/Honda/Firestone entry for Bryan Herta Autosport/Curb-Agajanian, which ended the day in the winner¹s circle during Sunday¹s historic 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 race.
Growing up a racer, this is the ultimate win, the ultimate race highlight and just one of the best racing experiences of my life. To share it with my family, my label and all the incredible people involved with driver Dan Wheldon as well as Bryan Herta and his race team was a dream come true. One of the best days ever,” said Borchetta.

In the driver’s seat conquering 200 laps on the iconic 2.5-mile asphalt oval and securing victory was 2005 Indy 500 winner and IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dan Wheldon. During the grueling 500-mile race, there were 23 lead changes among 10 drivers and seven cautions for 40 of the laps. With 10 laps remaining, Wheldon overtook both Bertrand Baguette and Scott Dixon before an unforgettable finish, overhauling rookie JR Hildebrand, who was slated for a record-breaking win. On the last turn of the very last lap Hildebrand’s car smashed into the SAFER Barrier wall coming out of Turn 4, allowing Wheldon to pass for this historic race to the bricks, taking the checkered flag.
Immediately after the race Wheldon exclaimed, “I just kept going until the end, man”, referring to Hildebrand’s misfortune. “It doesn’t matter in this race. Until you cross that yard of bricks for the final time it doesn’t matter and full credit to everybody at Bryan Herta Autosport, William Rast, Curb Records, Big Machine Records, Forsythe Solutions and aigo, Honda and Firestone... It’s unbelievable, man, and I’m so happy!”

At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway alone, Wheldon has remarkably finished in the Top 4 five times during the last seven races with back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2010. As Herta’s teammate at Andretti Green Racing, he won both the Indianapolis 500 becoming the first Englishman since Graham Hill in 1966 to hoist the coveted Borg-Warner Trophy and the IZOD IndyCar Series championship, highlighting his career with “The Double,” in 2005. Throughout his career, he has scored 15 victories, 42 podium finishes and 61 Top 5 results in a total of 131 IZOD IndyCar Series starts as well as two runners-up slots in addition to his 2005 title, and seized the 2006 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona sports car race title.

On display until October 23 in the Air Force One Pavilion, alongside the #98 Centennial NASCAR Sprint Cup car, the Big Machine Records-sponsored championship car was inducted into the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library in Simi Valley, CA on May 27. The exhibit is a key component of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration, a historic year-long celebration honoring the 100th birthday of America’s 40th President.

ABOUT THE BIG MACHINE LABEL GROUP: Scott Borchetta serves as President/CEO of the independent Big Machine Label Group, which includes Big Machine Records (founded in 2005), The Valory Music Co. (founded in 2007) and Republic Nashville (a partnership with Universal Republic founded in 2009 with Jimmy Harnen serving as President). In 2010 Big Machine was named Country Label of the Year by Country Aircheck Magazine/Powered by USA Today for the second consecutive year. Also in 2010, Big Machine’s signature artist Taylor Swift’s third album, SPEAK NOW, became the best-selling Country studio album debut of all time with over 1 million units sold in its first week. With the release, Taylor became the 4th female artist in history (across all genres) to debut with more than 1 million first-week units sold. The Big Machine Label Group’s current artist roster includes Multi-Platinum superstars Taylor Swift, Reba, Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride and Jewel, Platinum sensations The Band Perry, established acts Justin Moore, Jack Ingram and the Eli Young Band and hot newcomers Steel Magnolia, Sunny Sweeney, Edens Edge, Brantley Gilbert and comedienne Melissa Peterman. In 5 years, Big Machine Records artists have received multiple GRAMMY, CMA, ACM, American Music Awards, CMT Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, MTV Video Music Award and People’s Choice Award accolades as well as Brit Award and JUNO Award nominations.
