Interview with Garry Moore

Interview with Garry Moore

Ch.L.: Country Music has many new fans in Europe, who may be hearing about you for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who'se never seen or heard you before.

G.M.: A lover of people who wants to bring love, life, joy and hope to the world through Music!

Ch.L.: How was the last year for you? What were the highlights?

G.M.: Great live concerts!

Ch.L.: What's your latest CD and how's it doing?

G.M.: Paradise and it’s doing well!

Ch.L.: How did you choose the title for the CD, is there a story behind it?

G.M.: I wanted to give hope to all who struggle in this life, to assure them that after life on earth heaven will be much better in eternity with Jesus!

Ch.L.: Do you write the songs yourself and if not, how do you go about finding the songs for the your CD?
G.M.: YES! All of my material is original. I have written over 400 songs!

Ch.L.: Please tell us about the songs on your album.

G.M.: They are very inspirational to encourage and uplift the human spirit!

Ch.L.: What's the difference between your last CD and the current one?

G.M.: The songs are a little more worshipful this time, and a few less dance tracks than before!

Ch.L.: Your current single is being played by radio. What do you thing is specail about this song that makes people what to hear it?

G.M.: It’s very uplifting and inspiring, gives one a sense of hope especially in times like these!

Ch.L.: What will your next single be?

G.M.: Holy Ghost“

Ch.L.: What kind of songs do you like to record the most?

G.M.: Gospel Dance Song’s , Spiritual ballads and Instrumentals!

Ch.L.: You did a duet with Ladrena. How did that happen to come about?

G.M.: Ladrena has recorded other duets with me and we blend together perfectly and we compliment each others vocal performance!

Ch.L.: What's your favorite song among all the songs you've recorded and what's the story behind it? You’re Never Alone“

G.M.: THIS SONG WAS INSPIRED MAINLY BY MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER "ANIVEA" DURING A TIME WHEN OUR FAMILY WAS TORN APART BY DIVORCE! ALL 3 OF THE CHILDREN WERE EFFECTED BY THE SUDDEN CHANGE, BUT IT TOTALLY CRUSHED AND DEVASTATED "ANIVEA" SHE WAS THE BABY, AND AT THE TENDER AGE OF 10 SHE COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY HER DADDY WAS LEAVING THE HOUSE FOR GOOD!! IT TURNED HER WHOLE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN AND INSIDE OUT! SHE CRIED UNCONTROLLABLY, CONSTANTLY CALLING MY NAME AS I WAS PACKING MY CLOTHES, UNTIL I WENT OF OUT THE DOOR. AND AS MUCH AS I TRIED TO HOLD BACK THE TEARS I WAS ALSO CRYING UNCONTROLLABLY... DURING THIS TIME MY KIDS WERE ALWAYS ON MY MIND. I COULD SEE THE EXTREME HURT, PAIN AND CONFUSION ON THEIR FACES EVERY TIME I SAW THEM, AND I KNOW THEY COULD SEE THE PAIN ON ME. I PAINED, BECAUSE THEY PAINED, BUT ANIVEA DIDN'T HANDLE IT AS WELL AS THE OTHERS, AND FROM THAT SEASON OF HURT, PAIN, DESPAIR, DEPRESSION, HOPELESSNESS, AND DISCOURAGEMENT THIS SONG WAS BIRTHED! ONLY GODS STRENGTH SUSTAINED US DURING THIS TIME. HE RE-ASSURED ME THAT I WAS NOT ALONE, NOR WERE MY CHILDREN... WE ALL LEARNED THAT THE PAIN THAT LIFE'S TRIALS BRING, WONT LAST FOREVER... YOU WILL GET PAST THE PAIN AND SUFFERING AS TIME GOES BY, AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TELL OTHERS THAT "YOU'RE NEVER ALONE, YOU'RE NOT ON YOUR OWN

Ch.L.: How much creative control do you have over your music?

G.M.: All control!

Ch.L.: There's a lot of work that goes into a Number One hit ... what did it take to make it in your case?

G.M.: Sencerity, Hard work, Dedication and Prayer... other than that there is no one remedy! You never know whether a song will go to #1. or not!

Ch.L.: Do you have any interesting stories about how fans have been affected by your music?

G.M.: Yes! So many from around the world have commented on how songs have touched, changed, and impacted their lives tremendously!

Ch.L.: Who do you look up musiccally and how deep do your musical roots run?

G.M.: ( Gospel )Andrae Crouch ( Secular ) Earth Wind & Fire

Ch.L.: What do you think about today's Country Music versus its roots and where do you see it going in the future

G.M.: So far, so good and has a bright future!

Ch.L.: If you had the chance to change something about the music industry, what would it be?

G.M.: For independant artist to have the same opportunities and platforms as signed artist!

Ch.L.: As an artist you have to do so many different things such as recording, touring, doing interviews etc. What do you like best, what's your favorite activity?

G.M.: I love to write songs and record in the studio! The whole process of constructing a song that impacts the lives of people everywhere just blows me away! It’s the greatest honor to do this!

Ch.L.: What inspired you to become an artist?

G.M.: When i saw the beatles for the first time on Ed Sullivan in the 60’s.

Ch.L.: What inspired you to become a songwriter?

G.M.: It just happened, i have no explanation except that i wanted to be creative!

Ch.L.: What drives you?

G.M.: THE MUSIC IN MY BLOODSTREAM! I’M CONSUMED BY IT!!!

Ch.L.: What's unique about you that differentiates you from other artists?

G.M.: I hope that i am unique in my own way, with my own style.

Ch.L.: What has been your greatest challenge in music business?

G.M.: probably the promotional and marketing aspect of the businness!

Ch.L.: What moments in your career stand out in your memory as highlights and achievements which you're proud of?

G.M.: When 8 of my songs from the Paradise album went to number one on the soundclick Christian and Pop gospel charts!

Ch.L.: Who's your biggest critic, yourself or others?

G.M.: Myself!!! definitely!
Ch.L.: When you get time off, how do you like to relax?

G.M.: Spending time with family and watching NBA Basketball.

Ch.L.: Is there anything in your life that you would change if you could?

G.M.: I would love to win a Grammy! Thats my greatst dream in music!

Ch.L.: What has been the biggest disappointment in your life?

G.M.: Not dicovering my purpose sooner in my teen years, rather than in my 30’s

Ch.L.: Is there anyplace you haven't played that you would like to?

G.M.: The Apollo Theatre

Ch.L.: What can your fans expect to see when they see you in concert?

G.M.: Power, Excitment, Excellence, Love, and Uplifted!

Ch.L.: Many music fans today get their information about artists via the internet. Do you have your own website and what will fans find there?

G.M.: All of the information about me and my music and ministry!

Ch.L.: Tell us about the fan club and how people can join it.

G.M.: Going to www.myspace.com/garrymooremusic and joining the mailing list.

Ch.L.: What's the best compliment a fan has ever given you?

G.M.: How they were emotionally healed during a live performance of the song titled You’re Never Alone“ They said in that one moment, it changed their life forever!

Ch.L.. What message would you like to send your European fans?

G.M.: Stay encouraged, and have faith in God to take them through life’s challenges!

MASTER INSTRUMENT PICKERS 'PICK' IOWA

MASTER INSTRUMENT PICKERS 'PICK' IOWA

LeMars, Iowa....."Every year of our festival of old-time country music brings new surprises."  Bob Everhart is the Director of the 36th annual "National Old-Time Country, Bluegrass, & Folk Music Festival held in America's most 'rural' state, Iowa.  "We're in our 36th year, and this year appears to be as interesting as any we have ever done.  Going over the participants, and the days they are going to be with us between August 29 and September 4, proves very interesting indeed.  We have an incredible number of super-pickers coming this year.  By that I mean we have instrumentalists coming that have not only excelled on their chosen instrument, but have attained an envious reputation of high quality musicianship.  Some are coming for Hall of Fame inductions, some are coming for Rural Roots Music Commission Awards, and some are coming just to 'pick.'  We've always had great celebrities with us, and this year seems to be one of those stand outs.  Jim Ed Brown, Helen Cornelius, and Jeannie Seely are coming from the Grand Ole Opry for Hall of Fame inductions.  It's the 'super-pickers' however, that will 'strut their stuff' as being the very best in their fields."
The festival, which takes place at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds in LeMars, Iowa (very near Sioux City), boasts seven days of old-time acoustic music on ten separate sound stages.  Over 600 participating musicians take part every year, playing in jam sessions as well as backing other artists, or just plain pickin.'  According to Everhart, "We've always had super pickers at this event, many of our local and regional players are very high in the esteem held for great pickers.  This year however is a challenge, and it runs the gamut for the entire seven days."
"Starting on Monday, August 29, with a super 'setting the stage' for the entire festival, are three incredible pickers," Everhart elaborated.  "Kicking off the Monday show, is one of America's premier banjo players, without a doubt in the top five internationally.  Little Roy Lewis, from Lincolnton, Georgia, of the very famous Lewis Family, begins our week-long trek in master pickers.  Little Roy is well known for his comedic pranks at bluegrass festivals, but it's his incredible banjo playing that has placed him at the top of banjo players everywhere.  Watching him perform is in itself difficult, simply because he is so fast, so entertaining, and so fun.  Joining him on the Monday 'Super-Pickers' show is another legend, Tut Taylor from Wilkesboro, North Carolina.  Tut developed an entirely different way to play the Dobro.  Normally it is played much like the banjo, with finger picks.  Not so with Tut Taylor.  This incredibly talented man developed his own style of Dobro picking, using a flat pick.  Tut says "I didn't know the difference, since I only 'heard' my favorite pickers, and then duplicated what I heard with a flat pick."  He is also going into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame while he is in Iowa.  Also on the Monday billing, is Eddie Pennington, from Princeton, Kentucky.  Mr. Pennington will also go into the Hall of Fame.  He's a 'Merle Travis' style picker, a friend of the legendary Ike Everly, and when we asked Smokey Smith, a close personal friend of Merle Travis, if Pennington was as good as Travis, Smokey said..."he's better," so we're really glad to be able to start our week of 'Super Pickers' with such an enviable program."
The 'Super Picker' program doesn't end on Monday, it's just getting started.  According to Everhart, "On Tuesday we have a really distinctive and different approach to super pickers.  The Link Family from Lebanon, Missouri, is a family where everybody picks.  Bluegrass being their forte, they really shine on instrumental leads in that genre of music.  Also on that same bill is Roger Kenaston, another Dobro player of the first order.  Roger is one of our locals from Lyons, Nebraska, and we get excited when he starts playing his instrument.  On Wednesday, we're going to leave the 'pickin' to a very old instrument, the lap dulcimer.  Fred Techau from Silver City, Iowa, will be the presenter, and on Thursday, another special guest from Nashville, Tennessee, will perform on the acoustic guitar.  He's well known for his 'jazz' licks, but Tom Smith is a master of his instrument, and we'll no doubt hear all kinds of outrageous acoustic guitar picking from him.  On Friday, another regional performer John Duttweiler from Burlington, Iowa, will strut his stuff, and then on Saturday we'll have an incredible treat from one of the most innovative guitarists in existence.  Bonnie Guitar, from Soap Lake, Washington, the very one and the same that recorded "Dark Moon" is also one of the most distinguished guitarists in America.  It was Bonnie Guitar that tutored two groups to huge stardom, the 'Fleetwoods' and the 'Ventures' both groups well known for their ability to 'pick.'  Also on Saturday, we have a lady from Bavaria (Germany) who 'picks' perhaps the most difficult stringed musical instrument of all, the zither.  Difficult to top all of these pickers that come from all parts of the United States, and the world, but we have the ONLY three-time champion picker from the Winfield, Kansas, competitions, Jason Shaw, with us on Sunday.  Entrants can only defend their championship once every five years in this prestigious competition, which means Jason Shaw, from Lincoln, Nebraska, had to win the championship once every five years.  He's the only one able to do that in the history of the Winfield World Champion Flat-Pick Competitions."
There's also music competitions at Everhart's festival.  Prizes are not high, but according to Everhart, "We don't really do contests just to award a lot of money.  We do contests so aspiring performers can get some idea how they are doing as a performer, as a picker.  We've got some incredibly good judges at this event too, which includes many instrumental contests.  Multi-millionaire Bob Duff from California, and his wife Charyl, are coming to LeMars, not only to 'judge' contests, they are actively looking for entertainers and songs for current projects they are working on.  They are both traditionalists, so this is the logical place to find new talent and songs.  Mr. Duff is also an auctioneer,.  He says "Can't an older man have a hobby?"  So don't be surprised if he doesn't do an auction to help raise money for the Pioneer Music Museum, as well as help in our aspirations to build a children's music camp in the upper Midwest."

Colin Hay’s Gathering Mercury Goes Global

Colin Hay’s Gathering Mercury Goes Global

Former Men At Work Leader
Brings 11th Album
To International Tour

Colin Hay may be best known as the lead singer for Men At Work, the band that topped worldwide charts with anthems like “Down Under,” “Overkill,” and “Who Can It Be Now?” Hay’s justifiably proud of his place in pop history, but since moving to the United States in 1989, he’s made 11 solo albums and re-introduced himself to a new generation of fans. TV and film have embraced the timeless appeal of his songs -- quizzical, curious, cynical yet openhearted -- and he’s continually sold out shows with nonstop touring. But with all the ongoing success, he reckons that Gathering Mercury may be the best album of the lot.

Released internationally this month, Hay is bringing the new songs overseas, touring in Australia and South America this summer, and planning a European run later this year. He recently wrapped a successful tour of sold-out shows in the US, including press acclaim and television appearances for the deeply personal and diverse album that was inspired by the death of his father.
“These are some of the strongest songs I’ve ever written,” Hay says about Gathering Mercury. “The loss of my father last year brought an extra emotional contingent to them. I don’t have an idea of an afterlife, but I do feel like I had his help when I was writing this album. He wasn’t a songwriter himself, but he was a good singer, so I put myself in his place and wrote songs like he might have done.”

The tunes on Gathering Mercury are deeply affecting, but never maudlin. Despite the often-serious subject matter, they’re full of Hay’s usual optimism. “It’s not a conscious thing and may have to do with the Scottish mentality. We deal with darkness by making light of it. It doesn’t diminish the charge of the feeling, but it’s more pleasant to talk about your feelings if you stick with what’s going on today without dwelling in the past.”

New Single by Michael Martin Murphey "The Ballad of Jesse James"

New Single by Michael Martin Murphey
"The Ballad of Jesse James" now out to radio!

Rural Rhythm Records is very proud to announce the brand new single, "The Ballad Of Jesse James" by multi-award winning and Bluegrass Grammy® nominated artist, Michael Martin Murphey.  The song is from the upcoming album, TALL GRASS & COOL WATER releasing June 28, 2011.

“The Ballad of Jesse James” includes the talents of Michael Martin Murphey (lead vocals / rhythm guitar); Pat Flynn (lead /acoustic guitar); Ryan Murphey (mandolin); Troy Engle (fiddle / banjo); and Mike Bubb (upright bass.)

The song is part of a “James Gang Trilogy” feature on the album along with “The Ballad of Cole Younger,” and “Frank James Farewell."
This public domain ballad was supposedly written by Bily Gashade, but his identity is a mystery.  The song is a parody of "Rally ‘Round the Flag," a popular Union anthem during the Civil War.  Jesse and Frank James grew up on a prairie farm near Kearney, Missouri.  They became the most notorious outlaws in American history, and were compared to Robin Hood by Confederate loyalist after the Civil War.

“The Ballad of Jesse James” is now available to all radio stations via Airplay Direct. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements on TALL GRASS & COOL WATER as Murphey and his Buckaroo Blue Grass friends ride again.  This new project no doubt continues the important connection between bluegrass music and cowboy music that began with the first BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS album and continued with last year’s Grammy® nominated BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS II album.
