Steel Guitar News

Hello fellow players,

I thank everybody for all the great comments on the newsletters. A couple of years ago we were reaching well over 30,000 people, now with all the relaying going on from floods of steel guitar clubs and other organizations, it looks like we are nudging that figure higher by the month. Looks like there an awful lot of people that want to hear it the way it is and not just a bunch of goofy opinions from random posters on the internet that just found out what a steel guitar was a year or so ago.

When I go to the hospital to be worked on, whether its for brain surgery or just blood work, I prefer the person doing it to be highly experienced in his craft, not somebody that is just doing it as a part time job to supplement his bartending gig. When you folks need to know something about steel guitar, its best for you to get your information from someone thats been in it for forty or fifty years and by in it, I mean someone that has played professionally, sold, designed, built and anything else that has anything to do with steel guitar.

So if you have any questions, let me know. If I dont have the correct facts, email me and Ill tell you who does.

Naturally, as in any business, rumors can get started and a person should go directly to the source to get to the bottom of any rumors. One thing you can count on for sure, if I know the answer, Ill give it to you. If I dont Ill try to find out. You may wonder what Im referring to here in particular, Im not referring to anything, just general overall steel guitar information.

Many times I will do a complete subject in a newsletter and a couple years later, Ill see it brought up on the steel guitar forum. Obviously the guys that read my newsletters from a couple years ago already have the inside story. The story Im referring to here is the one where a player remarked that he was having trouble tuning with a fan blowing air across the stage.

I covered this whole complete subject three or four years ago, but then again, we do have new members joining all the time and anything you want to know more about, we have done much testing and have the opinions of many great professional players to draw upon.

Yes, if there is a fan above you or off to the side of the stage, it is putting pressure waves across the stage and trying to tune your guitar while in these pressure waves is like trying to tune your bass strings at the same time your bass player is trying to tune his bass guitar.

The lower the notes the harder they are to tune because low frequencies can bounce off walls and ceilings and return to your ears to totally confuse you in tuning in this range, but I feel most of you have already learned this.

A man calls the musicians' union to get a quote on a six piece band for a wedding. The representative says, "Off the top of my head, about $2000". The guy says, "WHAT? FOR MUSIC?

The representative responds, "I'll tell you what. Call the plumbers' union and ask for six plumbers to work from 6 pm to midnight on any Saturday night. Whatever they charge you, we'll work for half."

We still have many Nashville 112s for sale. Three new guitars that we have got in that I feel are very good deals are a red Emmons LeGrande II, a Sho-Bud Pro I birdseye maple and a triple neck Fender Custom. These guitars are excellent values, desirable and hard to find. Check our website for pictures and prices.

Check out our monthly specials at and well try to save you a lot of money.

Exclusive CD Pairs 12 New Artists and 12 New Songs
Best New NashvilleLEBANON, Tenn.  (April 18, 2011) Teddy Gentry has long been celebrated as a member of the country supergroup Alabama, and he is also the force and inspiration behind multiple other music successes in Nashville. Now, Gentry, and Porter-Gentry Productions, are lending a guiding hand to a very special CD that provides country music fans with an inspired assortment of new music, among which many a new favorite might be found. The CD, Teddy Gentry’s Best New Nashville, produced by Gentry, includes 12 new songs performed by 12 new artists and will be available exclusively at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store®, starting May 16.

Each pairing of song and artist on this CD was carefully considered and planned by Gentry, who collects songs the way some people collect stamps. Gentry regularly works with up-and-coming artists on stage and in the studio, and his advice in choosing a new song is to always make sure that there is an emotional connection. “I tell them that they really have to love a song because, if it’s a hit, they’ll be performing it for a very long time,” said Gentry, who knows a lot about hits, having written and performed quite a number of them as a member of the renowned group Alabama.

Gentry also knows about talent, and he regularly works with what he considers to be the best of the new artists to help them learn the ins and outs of the Nashville scene. He says this is his way of giving back because he knows from his own early experiences how hard it is to make it in this very tough business. And Gentry believes that making his new CD, Teddy Gentry’s Best New Nashville, available through Cracker Barrel, provides some fresh new sounds and some quality tunes for Cracker Barrel’s guests. He worked with some of Nashville’s top engineers, studios, and songwriters to ensure the quality of the CD.

“Cracker Barrel is pleased to work with Teddy Gentry on this special project to provide a showcase for some very talented artists from whom we might well be hearing more in the future,” said Chris Ciavarra, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Cracker Barrel. “These are artists who have worked hard and have honed their skills, and with this CD they are stepping up onto a larger stage,” he added.

Teddy Gentry’s Best New Nashville will be the latest in Cracker Barrel’s exclusive music program. In March of this year, Cracker Barrel released Kenny Rogers’ The Love of God which debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and #2 on the Top Christian Albums chart. In January 2011, Cracker Barrel released The Grascals & Friends - Country Classics With A Bluegrass Spin which debuted at #1 on Billboard magazine’s Bluegrass Albums chart and at #26 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. In November of 2010, Cracker Barrel released Smokey Robinson’s Now & Then which debuted at #19 on Billboard magazine’s R&B chart and was nominated for an NAACP IMAGE AWARD. September saw the release of the self-titled Rodney Atkins, which includes four #1 hits, and also the release of Mandy Barnett’s Winter Wonderland, which offers up all the authentic sounds of holiday traditions. In July, the company released Craig Morgan’s That’s Why-Collector’s Edition, and in May the release of Wynonna’s Love Heals debuted at #7 on the Billboard Magazine Top Country Albums chart. February’s release of Dailey & Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums chart, where it spent nine weeks in the top position and 18 weeks overall in one of the three top positions. One of its songs was nominated for a Grammy award®. Over the last few years, Cracker Barrel has released exclusive CDs with Alan Jackson, the Zac Brown Band, George Jones, Montgomery Gentry, Dolly Parton, Bill Gaither, Ricky Skaggs, Aaron Tippin, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Josh Turner, Amy Grant, Kenny Rogers, Sara Evans, and Charlie Daniels.

10. Help Is On The Way 11. If There Hadn't Been You 12. Old Chunk of Coal 13. I Will Rest In You

This award winning Christian singer shares an encouraging message of faith and love…
Susie has yet again delivered the goods on this her 15th album, which is the follow up to her superb 2006 release COUNT IT ALL JOY. In the same vein as her older sister Nashville superstar Reba McEntire, she has a gift for finding songs that have a positive message, which often tell a story that conveys hope and comfort to the listener. In 2008 Susie has made a breakthrough on UK National Radio courtesy of BBC Radio 2’s Good Morning Sunday Show, receiving regular airplay and featured as a Spotlight artist.

The theme for "Let Go" is Hebrews 12:1, its transcript is printed on the CD tray inlay.
The album is produced by Billy Aerts who has been associated with the band Lobo for more than 35 years and as a staff writer he had the title cut on Kenny Chesney’s 1999 ‘Everywhere We Go’ album. Joe Cocker, Holly Dunn, Lee Greenwood, Paul Overstreet, Janie Frickie, Jim Stafford and many others have also recorded his songs. Billy also contributes on this project co-writing two of the songs and singing backup vocals.
The magnificent opening song Never Alone brings forth an uplifting tempo with its soaring chorus lines Never alone / I'll be in every beat of your heart / When you face the unknown / Wherever you fly / This isn't goodbye / My love will follow you stay with you / Baby you're never alone. It did not surprise me to read that the talents of Gary Burr, Victoria Shaw and Sarah Buxton (who co-write Keith Urban’s Stupid Boy) penned such high quality fare. This song has also had an outing on pianist Jim Brickman’s album ‘Escape’ with Sara Evans lending her voice.

Throughout this album Susie’s voice radiates warmth and crystal that conveys rich emotion typified on the gospel flavoured ‘Sky Full Of Angels’ which was originally recorded by Reba on her album Room To Breathe back in 2003.
Sticks and Stones which Susie co-wrote with her niece Autumn McEntire begs the question that
Words are like fire; they can bring warmth and comfort, or burn and destroy. On her website Susie explains that after two separations and now divorce, after 25 years of marriage she was unable to continue in a situation of verbal and mental abuse but has chosen to do what was best for her and three adult children. Sharing with her fans that this 13-track collection of songs means a lot to her and a wish that they drive home a message of hope to everyone. This is typified on the superb up-tempo title track Let Go, with its super-hooky melody, written by young Texan Christian / pop writer Amy Douglas -It’s heartfelt plea is truly inspirational.

The emotionally charged If There Hadn't Been You will be familiar to fans of Billy Dean written by master tunesmith Tom Shapiro, with the heart-rending perfectly pitched vocal, delicate guitar (Pat McGrath) and an aching fiddle( Wanda Vick) provides a blue-chip country weeper.
The achingly beautiful ‘Less One Day’ another album stand-out enhanced by the sweeping steel guitar (Scotty Sanders) is a song displaying unequivocal love and devotion to a partner, which is encapsulated by the lines: If you live to be a hundred I can only pray / That I live till you’re a hundred ..Less one day

Other album highlights include Help Is On The Way, astute song choice here, which wholly suits Susie’s style. This was originally written by Barrie Shorrock the lead singer of Australian group The Little River Band who in 1977 with this track had a #1 single in their homeland and a #14 position on the Billboard charts in the States. This remake with its rasping electric guitar (Tom Hemby) could perhaps become a modern day anthem?

One of Billy Joe Shavers best known tunes ‘Old Chunk of Coal’ is as country at it gets and here it receives a refreshing new airing. The musicianship is first class, with the guitar, fiddle, steel and piano trading licks producing a clean and masterful sound.
The delicate closer ‘I Will Rest In You’ illustrates the artist’s deep faith and through it a determination to make it through troubled times.

Religious in nature yes but delightful musical enjoyment to gladden the heart.
